What are the main issues to look for on Who Dunnit?

#2 4 years ago

Slot machine .

#3 4 years ago

The main ramp, usually cracked, no replacement for it, and the slot reels..

#4 4 years ago

Wear on the inserts in the middle of the PF (clues). Slot reel slow/sticking is common but is usually easily fixed.

#5 4 years ago

Slot machine..slot machine..slot machine. It will drive the most experience tech crazy.

#6 4 years ago

Besides what's already been mentioned (the slot machine being the key priority: cracked reels and making sure the DMD matches up with the slot reels; an uncracked center ramp is also a priority: near impossible to find); also check to make sure the sewer weldment is unbroken (as they're also near-impossible to find so you'd have to go through welding what you have). Also: check for flipper button wear & cabinet fade on the reds & yellows.

This is a super easy fix. The three reels are numbered 1-3, but they install in the game something like 2,3,1 (I don't remember exactly, but it's not sequential). If the reels don't match the DMD, odds are very good the reels are just out of order and need to be swapped.

I think that might be 3-1-2.

Whichever's right, I recall a post where someone tried various combinations but that only thing that ultimately worked for them was changing out some or all of the LM339s on the motor PCBs.

#9 4 years ago

That was my post That was for the reels stuttering and generally not working at all. Working but not matching the DMD is probably wrong reels in wrong places.

You would think Williams could make a reliable slot machine mechanism.

Minor issue: Top right orbit switch when triggered should open up the right ramp, assuming this Whodunnit is off route, this usually needs fixing/replacement

#12 4 years ago

I would stay away from this pin. The ramp and slots make it a headache. As they say - the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

mines been running great for years.

#14 4 years ago

I disagree. The slots are SUPER easy to work on. A ramp is a ramp, wasn't somebody redoing the center ramp.

For me, it was fun for a while but got sold. It's very stop and go but also very unique. Read the first couple pages of the manual for the back story on all the characters or else the game doesn't make sense.

#15 4 years ago

Out of all the games i have owned it was the most unique. Non pinheads gravitated to it. It didn't last really long in my collection but none the less there was something "special" about it thats hard to explain. in a small collection...no way..but in a larger one...yes.

+1....The motors can be cleaned, the reels can be re-aligned and there are fixes for the reel hub grabbing the motor spindle ......a lot of great suggestions on Pinside for slot reel fixes.

Went to look at one today. A lot of black color scraped of the cabinet sides. A lot along the bottom of sides and a lot of nicks and scratches. I would say the cabinet is beat right now but some touch ups should go a long way. It didn't help that we scraped the crap out of the sides trying to get out of the basement.
All the ramps look good, one broken plastic, no play field wear spotted, 2 switch errors, 4 rusty legs and needs to be cleaned with new rubbers, coil sleeves, etc.
Never played the game so hope I like it. Thanks for the advice all!!!

There is a step motor with a tag that says good that I would pass along to a needed pinhead once I make sure my works fine. Any leads on plastics?

#18 4 years ago

Congrats! The cab is mostly black so touch ups won't be too difficult....keep us posted on your progress!

#19 4 years ago

Just for my own curiosity what would you all pay for one in described condition. If I haven't included certain details of the machine just fill them in yourself.

#20 4 years ago

It will take a few games but when you get what's going on its a great game . Slots are no issue easy to find motors and boards .The only unobtainable parts are center ramp and slot wheels

Here is what you will need to know:

Story Background:

Characters:

Nick Spade - Private eye
Tony - Owner of the casino and very content. Age 38
Victoria - Spider Lady from Europe. Age 34
Butler - Victoria's manservant. Also Walter, Tony's first partner. Age 53
Bruno - Tony's bouncer / bodyguard. Formerly Tex, Victoria's third husband. Age 42
Trixie - Works as a dealer for Tony. Also Walter's (unknown) daughter from England. Age 23

1900
Walter, a young wealthy playboy, and Mia, wife of the English Ambassador have a fling. They conceive VICTORIA, a secret VICTORIA'S mother keeps. She doesn't tell him before she leaves never to see him again.

1911
TRIXIE's mom dies giving birth to her. Tex is forced to be a single parent.

1915
Walter comes to town, meets TONY, and they become partners. They start the W&T PALACE, a struggling casino. TONY then cheats Walter out of his half of the casino and Walter disappears.

1917
Walter returns to Europe to find that VICTORIA'S mother has died and that VICTORIA has grown up in a boarding school. VICTORIA looks amazingly like her mother. Walter can only think of how much he loved Mia when he sees VICTORIA. Walter changes his name to BUTLER. He tells VICTORIA that he used to work for her mom and she hires him as her manservant. BUTLER, trapped by the memory of Mia, does whatever VICTORIA says. VICTORIA treats BUTLER like dirt....as she does most everyone.

1919
Tex forms a partnership with TONY and they create the T&T PALACE. This casino thrives and they become rich. TONY and Tex each get a tattoo on their arm that reads T&T PALACE. TRIXIE is 8 and has a crush on TONY. TONY and Tex are like brothers.

1922 (MAY)
BUTLER suspects the fate of all his daughters' past husbands and encourages VICTORIA to go after TONY. VICTORIA shows up with BUTLER. VICTORIA and TONY have been lovers off and on for a couple of years. TONY still avoids her grasp. VICTORIA marries Tex, her third husband. She becomes TRIXIE'S stepmother. TONY doesn't recognize Walter because BUTLER is the shadow of the man Walter was and looks 10 years older.

1923 (JANUARY)
VICTORIA and TONY conspire to kill Tex. The plan was: VICTORIA gets the money and TONY gets the Casino. Tex overhears VICTORIA'S half of the conspiracy. When she hangs up the phone he roughs her up and threatens that if anything happened to him she would be sorry. BUTLER witnessed Tex roughing her up. Unknowingly to VICTORIA or TONY, BUTLER sabotages the brakes of Tex's car. Tex drives off a cliff. Car explodes. Body was never found.

Tex, injured and disfigured, makes it to an underground doctor / plastic surgeon. Tex is reborn as BRUNO. BRUNO has one agenda; to get VICTORIA for attempting to kill him. No one will get in his way.

TRIXIE, now 11, moves in with TONY. VICTORIA can not be tied down with a child. TONY is the closest family that TRIXIE has. She resents VICTORIA for this and still has a crush on TONY.

TONY and VICTORIA each believe that the other did the brake job on Tex. VICTORIA and BUTLER leave for Europe in search of another husband for VICTORIA.

T&T PALACE becomes TONY'S PALACE

1930
TRIXIE and TONY are lovers but TONY will not commit. TONY gives her a job at his Casino. He keeps her on a string, never letting her get enough money to be free.

1932
BRUNO goes on a fact-finding mission about VICTORIA. He learns all about her and her dead husbands. He learns about her real life father. He also learns about her relationship with TONY. He now suspects TONY and VICTORIA of "fixing" his brakes.

TONY, unknowingly, hires BRUNO to work for him. BRUNO wants to be close because he knows that sooner or later VICTORIA will show up, and he wants to keep an eye on TRIXIE, his daughter. TRIXIE has been his only reason to live on some dark lonely nights. BRUNO keeps a locker full of TRIXIE pictures and news clippings.

1934 (Yesterday)
BRUNO waits for the day that he can extract his revenge on VICTORIA and TONY.

TONY thinks all is well and is ready to enjoy the good life that he deserves.

TRIXIE has finally learned that TONY is not to be trusted and she must do what it takes to protect herself.

VICTORIA and BUTLER show up to try and snag TONY once more!

For the longest time, it was REALLY hard to get those stepper motors, not anymore:

http://www.pinballlife.com/index.php?p=product&id=3210

Also, if your stepper isn't working, 90% of the time opening them up and cleaning the crap out of them fixes them. There really isn't anything to break (often) on them.

#23 4 years ago

Cool that the playfield is nice...the one I previously owned and several others I've seen have insert wear on the suspect down near the flippers. I love the jazz music after the game ends!

#24 4 years ago

Stepper motors for the slot machine also available here: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9238 Just have to reuse the connector from the old ones; Super easy to reuse with a pick tool.

I can deal with beat up cabs, some others may disagree. As long as the playfield is nice and it ends up playing well... I'm guessing 1,400-1,700 from what you described.

#26 4 years ago

1/2 the price, I like it.

So if I have the third reel running slow would the new stepper motor fix it??

#28 4 years ago

Stepper probably just needs to be cleaned. Remove it, it's just some screws and knock the metal shavings, gunk, or whatever else junky you find out of it.
