No really who cares... Well I do... I happen to like flipper sounds. My games are all over my house and I like to just bump that flipper button and here bustin glass and an explosion! Or maybe a really good burp.. Or just a Boo... Or maybe a poison dart wisping by my head... I guess you could say I'm a sound guy. The sounds that pins make are everything to me. The themes can make or brake me but the flipper sounds are a must. How many of you guys care and use your flipper sounds?

If it makes no sound, it's not working.

Anything mechanical will make noise. I can't say I would actively seek the clacking of flippers, though.

The sound of a knocker, however--I do enjoy hearing the thwack.

I know when the industry started converting from EMs to solid state, people missing the chattering noises EM pins made. I don't recall which pins they were, but for a short time, a few games included fake EM assemblies to reproduce the chattering noises of a score reset.

[edit]: They were called dummy score reels, and included in a couple early Williams games, such as hot tip and lucky 7. You can see the blank score reel assembly in front of the chime assemblies:

I think the OP is talking about attract sounds.

    #5 7 years ago

i think he's talking about the sounds that modern games make when the game is on but not being played. For example when I press the flipper buttons on my Road Show when it's in attract mode it makes the sound of thunder. Which always freaks me out when I accidentally hit the button while fixing the game next to it.

... or flippers that trigger a sound during play like Contact.

I've read the post twice and really have no idea what is being asked. I like sounds too though!

I think the OP means "attract mode (sounds)" that call out (in attract mode) when you hit a flipper button.

BSD says "haven't you forgotten something"? when the flipper button is pressed in attract mode (if the game is set to paid play).

If this is indeed what the OP means, 2 sound bites come to mind:
AfM's Martian saying 'Look, your shoe is untied!'
The Shadow's Phurba making... well, Phurba noises.

The Flying spear sound on Indiana Jones The Pinball Adventure.

When I first read the thread topic I thought it was referring to the annoying buzzing noise some flippers make. I can't stand buzzing flippers

    Add me to that list

Clarification: flipper sounds can be selected on WPC games in featured adjustments. They are sometimes refered to as attract mode. Not the electromechanical sounds the flippers make when activated in game play. I don't really consider them attract mode though. What I consider attract mode (adjustable attract mode) is the machine doing a small demo with music and sound. I don't think all wpc games do that.

Here's another one for ya... I can't figure out why TOM has no flipper sounds at all. It's the only wpc game that I know of that doesn't have them. ??

Yes! Especially when the room is quite and your least expecting it! I've jumped a few times. (what the F..., oh just the attract sound) lol

What about games on location? Flipper sounds on? Or no? Do operators want the flipper sounds on or is it the establishment owner that doesn't want to hear the sounds. Anybody care? I'm curious....

The reving engine sounds when you hit the flipper buttons on the Getaway is pretty cool.

    #18 7 years ago

My preschooler loves to hit the buttons in attract mode and see what sounds they make on my Sterns. It's fun for me too, it's a nice touch. I wish my IM had that feature.

    #19 7 years ago

I like them a lot. On Stern Star trek there are plentiful of sounds.

It may not have them when you press the flipper buttons, but when it is not on free play, has no credits, and the start button is pressed it says, "Ticket please."

Actually you are spot on with BSD as well - it's when you press the start button and there are no credits.

    #22 7 years ago

Hmmm. I never new that. I will have to set that up to hear that one.

    #23 7 years ago

One of the many reasons I like IJ so much is that it makes three sounds if you hit the flipper button three times and it makes three clicks if you pull the trigger on the gun three times. Six sounds !

    #24 7 years ago

Yeah my favorite on that game is the poison dart wizzing by your head!

    #25 7 years ago

I like them and tend to hit the buttons on the machines to the side of the one I'm playing between balls just to hear them.

    #26 7 years ago

One thing that is nice is Stern included the Radio Station as an option on most of their music band machines.
Great touch to hear the entire song list via use of the flipper buttons.
This concept had not been used in quite a few years.

Very cool. Never heard of that.
