Quoted from mastercello:

Nice work so far, i have the same task ahead of me in the next few weeks.
But i will get a completly new cabinet with the bolts already removed (head) or immersed where ever possible?
How about the cutout of the legs on the front and side - did they line up on yours?
Mine have a little difference on them.

Mine lined up perfect. The only annoying thing was the cutout for the cab protector not fitting in the back, but it was a quick fix.

Nice work looking good!

Thanks! Not sure how you paint yours, but if you ever want to borrow my paint sprayer hit me up. (same goes for anyone else local)

Thank you, Steve!

Glad they made it there safely, enjoy!

Went around and cleaned up some edges. Here i want to make sure the front of the rail wasnt going to push against the front decal, so I trimmed a little off with the dremel.

20200614_125621 (resized).jpg20200614_125621 (resized).jpg

Went to put the legs on and to me they were just too close to the rad cal. I figured they would probably rub during any nudging. Asked wifey to cut out some felt to go in between the leg and the cab protector (I did this on FH as well). They are the same shape as the protector so they wont be seen.

Legs and cabinet armor on, looks gorgeous! 100% happy I went the candy chrome route (though expensive, ugh, but worth it)

Next up, put the backbox/head back together and get that sucker back on the machine. But first, need to clean up and paint the bolts.

I used rustoleum for the bolts and black metal parts on my FH and thought they came out really nice so I am doing the same here.

These are the bits i use: https://www.amazon.com/SE-8230DD60-30-Piece-Assorted-Diamond/dp/B001BK0TRM/ref=sr_1_1

I went with "homecoming blue" for the paint. It's not perfect, but I am really happy with how close it matches (second from the left when I was trying colors out).

Next I popped in the colordmd.

Getting ready to put the rotisserie together, but first I need to sort out the wood rails.

Looks like they are wrapped in some kind of vinyl?

I assume I peel this crap off, sand and paint them?

20200619_203031 (resized).jpg20200619_203031 (resized).jpg

#61 3 years ago

one word... nope

Like when I took vynil off the cab, I tried heating it up and peeling it off. It actually came up pretty easily but what it left behind was this nasty glue residue.

I sanded it off the best I could but I was barely getting it up. Stupid me decided to just paint it. My theory.. "just put several coats on it and it will be fine"

ugh, wrong.

No matter how much I painted it, it looked terrible and was all sticky. So I sanded the paint off and you can see where the glue remains.

Feeling defeated I decided to break for the night.

One of the handy things about living around here... 20 minute drive to Cliffy's house!

Drove over, shot the shit for a while... always enjoy a visit to Cliffy's

20200623_140736 (resized).jpg20200623_140736 (resized).jpg

Managed to snag a shirt while I was there.

#63 3 years ago

Ok, back to these god damn things.. I found that sanding was doing me no favors. The heat from the sanding was melting the glue and gumming things up. I eventually figured out that a whole shit ton of elbow grease with the putty knife was the way to get this crap off.

20200623_202422 (resized).jpg20200623_202422 (resized).jpg

After a good solid hour of that, followed up by some final sanding I was finally good to go.

20200624_201845 (resized).jpg20200624_201845 (resized).jpg

Tomorrow I will paint these suckers (again!) and get these on the PF.

Hoping to get the rotisserie up by tomorrow night so I can start re-populating things.

Yeah, I hate that vinyl crap. I figure i should just use some oak scraps around and remake them, but I haven't brought myself to doing that yet.

I just ordered nice new ones in blue from reese rails - which is doing a fabulous work!

This is the route I will go next time, hindsight being 20/20

Old and new side by side, I was only able to spot one miss on Mirco's part at first glance (nothing major imho). Very happy with how it looks.

Time to get this bad boy on the rotisserie

First up, the pops. To get the screws in I took a large fender washer, put some felt on the back and then I just screw a nut on to it that will slowly bring it right into the right spot (vs hammering it in, not that there is anything wrong with that if that works for you, but it makes me cringe)

Playing a little catch up here.

Installing the mantis ramp protectors was kind of a PITA. First off, they did not fit the thickness of the PF. Rather than try to bend them though, I just routed down a bit on the back side of the wood.

20200628_194932 (resized).jpg20200628_194932 (resized).jpg

For the targets, I read through other threads going over this install and the consensus seemed to be that the targets should go as far forward as they can. I just used the dremel to make some new pilot holes.

20200628_202226 (resized).jpg20200628_202226 (resized).jpg

In the end, very happy with how they went in.

At this point, just trying to wrap up getting the top-side back together.

Disaster drop time. I had to dremel the bottom front so the flap sat flush on the playfield

With the bulk of the topside done (sans upper pf) time to wire things back up

Before putting the wired up playfield back in, gotta install these mirror blades first. Super stoked as I hadn't planned in it (but wanted to) and got surprised on my bday last week.

With the playfield back in, time to install the new boulders. A little darker than the originals but I like em.

Holly crap, getting the upper ramps to all fit is no small feat.. ugh

Getting closer

Got the ramps in.

For the whirlpool ramp I had to route down under the flap so it would sit flush. I also had to route out more space for the diverter to move in.

Finishing up.. a few oopses

First, wrong sign? Lol

20200707_190632 (resized).jpg20200707_190632 (resized).jpg

Second, ball was getting stuck so I had to dremel a little more clearance

And it's a wrap!

This was not an easy one. I feel for anyone that has to shop a WH20. That upper PF and upper ramps are just just beasts to deal with. Specially with repro ramps. They are gorgeous and 100% worth it, but man.. they just require a ton of tweaking and dremeling to fit.

Very happy with all the stuff I added. Mirror blades look awesome on this game. Really like the new boulders (yes darker, but still very nice IMHO). The LED's really brighten things up and compliment the artwork well. The candy chrome (and the blingy chrome door) really work well with the game (for me at least). The rad cals, my first time doing these but man, I love them. It looks like my old WOZ's clear coated cabinet, it's just a work of art.

There were certainly some struggles.. and this definitely too longer than I would have liked it to, but hey.. it's way shorter than the 7 months it took me to do my funhouse, lol.. so at least I am improving.

This game is 100% a keeper for me, so I am just super stoked to have it finally done.

Awesome job! Anyone that takes the plunge doing a full restoring a Whitewater derservers and applaud for coming out successfully. This is one of the hardest games to restore - correctly - IMO. High Five arcadenerd925 !

#84 3 years ago

Very nice and impressive work - congratulations!
I have mine ahead and will might ask you regrarding the tweaks and dremel actions on the ramps once i'm there (if i'm allowed).

#85 3 years ago

It looks great! And I'll second the new ramps needing tweaking in places, but worth it in the end.

#86 3 years ago

Nice job!
(Recommendation: use screws for Bigfoot's cave boulder on the left side, like the original - instead of zip tie.)

#87 3 years ago

Great detail about dremeling and ramp and mantis fitting.
