The glitter phenomenon has begun... soon original WH20 toppers will look boring! SELL NOW!

    SEND GLITTER NOW!!

If you mount a bulb or a few on loose springs, pointing up at the glitter, say whites/ice blue, the glitter would look like water moving with the nudging of the game.

Actually the chase lights that are there do a nice job of giving the glitter that effect... IMO.

    Quoted from Kneissl:

This mod drove me to finish my game. Anyone with a spare minute willing to shoot me some pics and measurements of the cut out section of the white water backbox?

Looks nice! As far as pics for the cutout section are you talking about the top of the backbox where the chase lights sit?

    #55 6 years ago

what about a combo of blue and silver glitter? maybe even a touch of Gold.

Yeah, I have the metal part that covers the lights.. just need to know what I have to cut/add where the lights sit.

This looks really cool; I love the colour.

That's a great idea and turned out terrific. Did you try, or think about trying, blue glitter instead of silver?

Yes, I stuck with silver because its like the original but Kneissl did his in blue... did you see it? I wouldn't mind seeing a mix of blue and silver now.

I just don't understand that the technology from 1993 exceeds that of 2017 and we can't properly reproduce this.

    I couldn't have said it better !

Bringing back TeeKee’s 3 year old WW topper post.
This is by far the best idea for creating a decent WW topper.

I took TeeKee’s idea and used German glass glitter in 3 colors and it looks fabulous!

Thank for the great idea teekee - now I just need to find a couple of light PCBs a light board and cables! It’s really too bad that Great Lakes Modular has gone radio silent. Would love to have his setup. Anyone have a set of GLM boards they want to sell??

Well... I gave it a shot and am very surprised how well it turned out! I'm going to add some blue glitter for depth but it already looks way better than it did before. Actually close to looking like flowing water.

What would an original white water topper in good condition sell for?

    $750.00 and up.

    #68 3 years ago

The previous owner bought a replacement decal which is pretty boring compared to the original. For 6 bucks and maybe 2 hours of total time I got a decent looking topper that's way better than it was before. Until someone figures out how to replicate the original effects this is decent for now.

    #69 3 years ago

I may have a used original somewhere in my old parts. I thought it was long gone but my son said he saw it a few years ago.

Did mine in light blue glitter glue. It dries clear. I think it came out actually pretty good

Looks great. How does it perform?

    #72 3 years ago

Once I get it installed tonight I’ll report back. Preliminarily it performs great.

    #73 3 years ago

Holy crap!! Glad I bought mine when I did.

Here is my attempt to improve my replacement decal.
I very lightly sanded the waterfalls so the paint would adhere.
I used this dimensional metallic paint I found at Michaels craft store. It’s more like a thick paste. I painted everything with Silver first, then came back and added some Pearl.
Still nowhere near as good as an original topper, but better than what I started with.

Man, that last pic actually looks pretty good! It has a lot of dimension. Have you lit it up yet?

    #76 2 years ago

I'm also curious to see that lit up. Great work!

    #77 2 years ago

It looks okay lit, but nowhere near as good as an original. I think I need to go back and add some grayish/silver paint. Maybe that contrast will help animate the waterfalls.

Just got my WH20 and about to embark on my own poor mans topper. The original is amazing and its a shame reproductions to date haven't been up to par. Going to channel my inner Liberace

You can see that it’s nowhere near as good as the original, but decent enough.

    #81 2 years ago

Such a fickle thing, this topper.

I have my Wh20 in the only spot in my basement that won't accept a machine with a topper, because all is lost.

    #82 2 years ago

Keep the hope alive, i ran poor mans topper for maybe 5 years before i scored a real one.

    Details for this thread:

    $39.99 # 03-8745 WH2O waterfall topper plastic support here: https://www.thepinballwizard.net/cabinet-parts/white-water-waterfall-support-backbox-topper-03-8745/

    $35 # 31-1710 WH2O waterfall topper decal here: https://treasurecovepinball.com/Library/decals/white-water/white-water.htm

    03-8745 and 31-171003-8745 and 31-1710

To have a forgiving install of the vinyl waterfall decal where you can center 'til your heart's content, use a rinsed-clean, fine mist bottle (e.g., hair product) to spray 1 part dish soap, 20 parts water onto the plastic topper support. Shake the bottle to mix the soap into the water. It helps not having suds at the top of your bottle, and furthermore it helps to use warm water to keep the decal more pliable and to better mix the soap.

If the water runs or forms larger droplets after spraying the plastic support, wipe with a towel and try again (the mist must be fine).

    Soapy mist sprayed:

    Soapy Mist SprayedSoapy Mist Sprayed

Personal preferences vary, but my preference is to use a micro fiber cloth to push the water from underneath the decal away from the center to all the edges, dabbing the soapy water up with a paper towel. At this point, it’s okay to have suds coming out, as you smooth the decal and look closely for bubbles trapped underneath.

You can see the water still trapped to the left and right of center:

    Smoothing ProcessSmoothing Process

Up until all the water is smoothed out from under the decal, there can be slight movement, so be sure to watch for your decal possibly shifting from being centered.

Someone in this thread advised it was better to do the Elmer's Glitter Glue after the decal was installed, so start here and have fun (recommend blue Elmer's, posted above by @Aflacjack):

    Elmer’s blue glitter glue FTW.

Sticking with LEDs. Alternating blue and white, per Comet instructions

Might not have the original 3D effect, but definitely is a fun effect with the sparkling glitter.

Great thread and examples for others.

Only other tip is to reinforce the glue on the underside of the decal so the glue on the top doesn’t lift it when curing.

Thank you! No reason for anyone to be without a WH2O topper, unless they just can’t fit it
