I noticed that I have 2 dots (in the same column) that are always locked on, and other dots in that same column only work when they want to. When I run a display test, everything is perfect except for that one column, page test works fine, but the RAM test comes back with a "RAM DATA ERROR" message.

I've reseated the ribbon cable, with no change. I understand that the 6264 RAM is a common failure point, and when it does it causes the aforementioned issues.

My question is twofold: 1) Does this indeed look like a RAM failure? And if so, is this the RAM I would get to fix it: https://www.greatplainselectronics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=6264LP-70

2) How sensitive are these boards to soldering? I've done boardwork several times in the past, so I have no qualms doing so, but I've heard (and seen) horror stories of soldering jobs gone wrong. If its particularly difficult to work on these boards, I'll probably just send the thing out, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

If you have a desoldering gun, I'd have at it. Might want to let someone else do it if you don't . If you have the original ribbon cables in there, I would replace them. Reseating the cables won't help if they're bad and they can go bad. Might as well replace the caps while you're at it too, if you don't mind doing the work.
If it's not the cables then my next guess is the RAM. Should be the right one but ask Ed to confirm.
The traces on the boards can lift easily so remove all the solder and gently remove components. Don't force anything, components should almost fall out on their own.

Definitely a RAM failure. See:

Yes, that's the right part.

As you've noted, the traces on the dot controller are very fine, and removing the RAM is not trivial. Unless you've removed one from either the dot controller or the MPU, I'd suggest sending it to a pro. Drop me a PM if I can help. I'm happy to take care of it for you.

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the help and advice. I don't own a desoldering gun, but I've got a trusty solder sucker. I've done board work on Bally -17/-35 and a couple of William's System 6 boards (replacing those scanbe sockets and such) successfully, but not much else.

I *think* I might be alright treading carefully on my own on this one, but that could all change if I decide against it, and I'll definitely be reaching out for professional help in that case.

Thanks again,
Max
