Now I am more confused than I was after reading the original post. Had this issue been happening since you bought the game? How did the wire get soldered to the wrong location. A pic would be great for future reference.

Basically the ground was bridged across the two coils, causing a parallel load on one transistor. Kind of surprised the transistor didn't fail but that is still probably within the load tolerance of the MOSFET. Now if both coils had their diodes removed or open, that would probably cause enough of a voltage spike to kill the driver.
