Here I go again on a pf restore. Not as bad as my Taxi, but will keep me busy for a while .
Took it on a barter for clearcoat services for a friend. Just getting the Mylar glue off is half the battle . I use 90% alcohol and a plastic razor blade , then roll my fingers across the dried alcohol until it balls up . Flour wasn't needed on this one, but helps if it isn't coming up easy.

Looks like I will need to do quite a bit of painting , so after cleaning up all of the ball marks with magic eraser , cleaning up the raw wood areas , and sanding the ball shooter lane it's about ready for the first cleat coat application. I'll put down 2 coats to isolate the old paint and begin my art reconstruction . One nice thing is inserts are level, so not going to have to build up with extra clear on this one.

Question for the group: what to do with the raw wood around the spinning disc ? It's to dirty to sand without sanding off too much wood, and it's kind of nasty looking. Leave it , or take the black all the way into the cutout ? Paint it light tan? What do you think here?

Joey

Looking forward to watching your progress!

#3 5 years ago

Hey I recently bought a Whirlwind play field myself, its condition is much the same as yours.

I will be watching your progress very closely to see how you go.

I will put some pics of mine up on the weekend if you are interested.

Thanks.

Yea, shoot up a pic ! Hope to get some time this weekend to clear mine. I am sure there is a decal set available , any better than another? Gotta couple inserts that I'll either touch up or sticker, or water slide decal .

Ready for clear . Three inserts will need to be repaired , so I scraped off the partial text , and sanded with 1000 grit to smooth out the insert. I Grey scotch brite the whole pf for adhesion , cleaned the crap out of it with alcohol and glass cleaner. Decided to spray a light brown where the wood is so ugly around the spinning disc, to simulate the wood color. It’s only a small sliver of color that will show , and will look better than discolored wood .
Should get to clearing it Saturday , then start with the color matching .
Really not much insert lift , so got lucky with this one.

Excellent! So many Whirlwind restores in the ATL over the last year. Great to see another one!

I just have the pf though , I have a ww and a Pinot to restore . Not sure what I'll do with them once done, might sell or trade for something , who knows . I just enjoy the challenge of the restore .

First clearcoat down , 3 coats . Use Akzo Nobel products , have my pick but choose Utech 4.0 clear, as it does well in a no booth situation with minimal air flow. Low Voc , super high solids clears like lots of air movement , and a medium solids clear does better in garage shop conditions.
Next I’ll sand it with 800 grit on a DA sander using a interface pad to level it a bit without breaking through at the inserts . Grey scotch the areas I can get into and begin the colors .
I got lucky, last night I went through the paint I used on my Earthshaker and found maybe 5 colors I needed for this. So that helps save time for sure.

Off to the lake , for a FFO( fun family outing)

Spent some time on it now that softball season is over. The frisket did fine , even though it said no solvent paints, however I kept the coats light , as I could see where a semi wet coat would have lifted it right up. Blue upper area done, but had clear lift on an insert where I had masking tape , so gotta fix that now , damn system 11 games
I use automotive basecoat , thousands of color choices , and it’s my profession .
Back on track, more progress to come .

More progress today , sprayed red. Still have some brush touch up to do, intricate masking left some areas to finish by fine brush.
As of now , white, light blue, green, and red are done.
Next up will probably be dark blue and another couple coats of clear.

Finished the orange , did a little dark blue also. The white and Black tornado is gonna be next , along with the kickback lane, and flipper wear spot. That should about finish the colors, then gotta outline everything in black with a fine paint pen or fine line pinstripe tape.
This one will probably have taken 9 months when done, but it’ll be super nice for an original.

More progress this weekend, all that is left is the left tornado and a few inserts .
It’s been 8 months in the making , think I’m about 3 hours shy of having this one done .
Here is where I’m at. Check out the pics and video .

Thanks, it’s the part I love most about the hobby .
This one was the worst I’ve ever started out with , I have a Pinbot waiting to do next , it’s pretty bad also. I don’t even have a WW anymore , just doing this because it’s fun to see what I can do with them , and bring an old pf back like new .

I just finely sanded the backside and left original. Mainly to remove any coil dust .
Only working on topside .

So I finally took on the hardest part of the touch up, the tornado on the left side. Came out better than expected, so now I want to do the right side, just to get it nice and bright like its supposed to be . Al that’s left is one insert , that right tornado, and a final clear coat once the pollen gets out of here.

It’s been one year to the week that i got this old pf from a buddy , looked so bad when I started that I wasn’t sure if it would be worth the time. I wonder how many hours I have into? Just doing it for the fun of it, as I don’t even have a WW any longer , but feel i saved it from the dumpster .

And you are welcome to my house anytime Joey.

I wish I had the time and skill to do this stuff like you and mitch. I'd buy cheap playfields and fix them up to hang on the wall.

#32 4 years ago

I wish I had the electronics background , i struggle with that , that’s why we complement each other making the hobby a friendship.
I do get attached to the ones i restore , it’s like a painting i just spent a year on and it’s hard to let it go.
Mitch makes the tough stuff easier with the masks that’s for sure .

Both tornado areas done now .
Wish I could get done by SFGE in Atlanta next week, had hope to sell there , but ain’t happening. Still 2 inserts to spray and a final clear . Almost done though , a year and 4 months later

Are you respraying the inserts with airbrush stencils? I want to magic erase all of the inserts on a jokerz I am working on and just bought a vinyl cutter... I wasn't sure if I should do that or use decals. Have any thoughts? The jokerz I have just has the old clear (lacquer?) kinda caked on the inserts even though it's off the playfield and the only way I can really get them looking tip-top shape is to take it off with a magic eraser.

1 week later
#38 4 years ago

I sand the insert back to raw plastic with 1000 grit wet. Then have a mask created by a friend and spray them with automotive basecoat.
Some games in the past I’ve uses decals and cleared over them.
Both work fine , mask is more like the original and fit better though .

#39 4 years ago

Finally done ... I think. I have a couple tiny flaws no one can find , but I know they are there. So maybe leave as is, maybe not . It’s so nice I hate to have a ball roll on it , but it will make someone a nice pf to swap over to one day . Not sure if the hours in it , maybe 150 and 14 months .
