I just received my Cliffys (ramp and cellar holes) for my Whirlwind, even though my ramp is in good shape. I want to keep it that way. They look great are not that noticeable. The ramp protector should definitely not affect play. I once played a WW with a totally hacked (ugly) metal protector made from thicker scrap, and it even worked ok. I would say try it out. If you end up getting new ramps later, you will at least be able to protect it with your Cliffy! Cliff will set you up. Even his packaging is professional and is a super nice guy.
