Looking for some help here. Have a whirlwind with a lamp row lighting intermittently. Lamps work in test mode but just like gameplay they work intermittently, alternating between normal and dull or sometimes not at all. I have checked all bulbs, connections, diodes(haven’t checked under pf light boards) and the q80 transistor tests good. Any thoughts?
    Thanks guys

Check the lamp boards under the playfield for bad solder joints at the connector.

Reflowed all light board connectors. Still no luck. No lights in the row work at when I first power it up but then they come on intermittently and flicker.

    Check ground.
What kind of voltage do you see across socket?

Did you check the 3 watt resistor at R113?
You might consider replacing the 2N5060 at S1.
I've seen strange things at the Bally lampdriver boards because of a bad 2N5060.

Voltage across socket is around 2v when working and no voltage when the lights aren’t working. Tested r113 and s1, they test fine. Diode at d4 has been previously replaced (not by me), also tests fine, but it’s signaling a previous issue with this circuit. Any thoughts?

Is 7406 U55 hex inverter working?

It is stabilizing voltages for transistor q80.

    Is the 2N5060 original?
If yes, replace the 50 cent part, just to be sure.
Otherwise you would need to see the voltage at various points with a scoop or logic probe.
Allthough a logic probe isn't as accurate to see the voltage going up and down.

Hey Nix, any updates with this issue?

I'm having the same problem with my Whirlwind but it's the 2x bonus light and the green SW flasher between the yellow pop-bumpers on the left side so I'm curious to see what your approach is.

Like you, I've verified 6.3V coming from the cable harness in both instances but reading a voltage drop on the two non-working lights from 2V-5V.

Following this thread before I start trying to tinker with components that aren't broken. Gonna check the soldering job on the circuit boards when I get home later tonight.

No update. Ordered a new 2n5060 and a new 7406 from Marco. I’ll report back after install

Any luck fixing the problem? I hve a 50K light and a cellar lamp I am having the same issue with.

Not sure if this'll help or not, but I had a similar issue with Space Station recently. Row 8 of the lamp matrix would go off and on randomly, couldn't figure it out.

Finally tracked it down to the wire in the IDC connector on the main board. Re-pined that guy with a new connector and no more issues since.

I guess the vibrations of playing (or my awesome nudge factor) would cause that wire to shift and make poor contact.

Just another attack vector to consider.

    Thanks,

Back at it. Sorry due to work schedule I only have time for my hobby during the winter.
Update; I replaced the 2n5060 and the lamp row worked in attract mode. Started the game and the lights no longer worked. Also no longer working in attract mode either. I assume the 7406 ic at U55 is bad causing the new transistor to fail again. Ill replace the diode and the r111 resistor as well while I’m at it. Should fix the issue correct?

Confirmed it is. Was previously replaced and socketed so I replaced it anyway. Still no lamps. If the old one was bad would it have blown the new 2n5060 transistor I installed? Waiting delivery on a resistor from Marcos to replace r111
