Anyone have the thin plastic with leaves on it just to the right of the lift ramp that they would sell? It's the only plastic I need and it's crazy to buy a whole set

#2555 5 years ago

Does anyone keep the spinning disks on the "high" setting? I tried it, but it seems insanely fast (like it would cause wear on the mechanism) and it actually seemed to have less effect on the ball, as of they weren't grabbing as much because it was so fast.

Quoted from scampcamp:

Is there a good way to prepare ww for transport? Should I do anything with the topper? Thanks

As with any game, just make sure the wires don't pull tight between the back box and cabinet while folding the head down. The topper is fine.

#2571 5 years ago

Ha! Quite the shed!

#2583 5 years ago

I am loving this game

And this mod from rockcustompinball for the topper.

Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

The LED flashers in the red domes and a couple underneath playfield will flash when you hit the flippers. It has something to do with how the system 11 power is routed to those. The fix is to put diodes in.
I had red LEDs in my dome flashers. Instead of installing the diodes for now, I took them out and put regular bulbs in. Make sure to go into settings and set flashers to brightest setting if you go incandescent.
The LEDs in the back panel do not behave in same manner and I have LEDs back there with no issue. Put a couple of purple in that piece you are holding ... middle and one of the ends. Really good color to compliment the game sounds when they go off!

My LEDs do not do this. I don't think anyone has added any diodes. Could it be the brand/type of led?

#2609 5 years ago

They were put in by the previous owner. They are comet and look like little towers. All the LEDs are comet and look to be more expensive versions than what my cheap ass buys

I was wrong...... Just notice today that the flashers do give a brief half flash when I press the flippers. I can't believe I never noticed it, but now I can't unsee it!

Quoted from DumbAss:

You just reminded me of my inability to unsee interlaced video displayed on a progressive device.

Holy hell..... I'm thinking I just live with the flicker, or put in incandescents if it really bugs me

Quoted from Flynnyfalcon:

Fiddled with the GI return connector and turned it back on and lower GI was on!!! Turned the machine off and on again a few times and it still worked!!
Re-set everything readying to play it, turned back on and no lower GI again
What the hell.

Forgive me of you are already aware, but whirlwind does switch between lower and upper GI during gameplay.

#2737 5 years ago
Quoted from Flynnyfalcon:

I’ve never actually seen the GI working properly, so thanks for the heads up, but there’s definitely an issue. The whole lower GI is out (but intermittently will turn on) along with a decent portion of the back box lighting. Even in attract mode it’s the same.

Aaah. Yes, the backbox should stay lit. It shouldn't be intermittent, but during gameplay the upper and lower go switch back and forth. I think it happens when certain flashers go off. I will play a game today and take note of when this happens if it might help.

#2739 5 years ago
Quoted from Flynnyfalcon:

The GI in the slingshots should be on most of the time you'd suggest, which it's not.

okay I just played two games and I stand corrected. It appears that the lower GI (including slings) should stay on the entire time except for when the entire GI flashes off momentarily like when you hit the cellar door. the upper GI seems to go off on occasion to accommodate other flashers that need to operate but during that time the lower GI remains lit.
As soon as I launch a ball, the upper goes dark for a second but lower all stays on. Somewhere around here, there is a post explaining why it does this because of board limitations.

Quoted from AdjustFailure:

Recently my Whirlwind game made a new sound and lighting effect that I had not seen or heard before and flashed "three way combo" on the display.
I am not sure what I did but it seems to be a special accomplishment -- I have only seen this once in the 25 years I have had this game. What did I do to get this "three way combo" thing?

It's the cool siren sound for the three way.....
One shot thru the pops, then around the orbit off the upper flipper, then the millions ramp off the upper flipper. It rocks!

#2815 5 years ago
Quoted from Mageek:

Oh so that's how I got that had the game for about 5 years and first time I heard it was about a month ago, but didn't know what happened. Thanks, now I will be trying for it.....

That's pretty much my main goal every game. Whenever I get it, I tell upstairs to my son " Did ya hear it?!"

#2819 5 years ago
Quoted from darcangeloel:

I think this is the perfect way to describe it, its like I can hit it but it better be perfect.

That's how mine is. I think if you could make the shot easily it wouldn't be as rewarding when you nail it.

#2824 4 years ago

You can't really get a good picture of it, but I picked up a CPR mirrored backglass from gabegabegabe and it's really cool!
Great upgrade and met a nice pinsider

Quoted from kermit24:

Do you have a photo of this? I also got the decal with my new ramps but it wasn’t on the original.
[quoted image]

That's the upper ramp. It could be the decal that goes on the separate plastic above the habitrail just after the ramp.there is a similar yellow one on the left ramp.

I've never seen this happen.
After about 3 minutes the fan & spinners stop or I think it would have stayed there quite a long time.

Looks like you may need to level those spinners from underneath.

Quoted from veejay:

Just bought my first Whirlwind and completed a nice tidy up of the game over the weekend.
I have a large collection and I’m looking forward to getting into this game.
I have a couple of questions for owners.
The upper left ramp shot on mine is very hard to shoot from the saucer eject. The problem I have is the ball comes off the stainless orbit rail and the shot is almost un-makable - presumably due to the power lost from the flipper to ball. It just clatters around the ramp and back rolls.
However it is quite repeatable when the ball is neat on the upper flipper, but unless I time a perfect left orbit , its hardly ever delivered onto the flipper neatly.
The the question(s) are:
Is this normal?
What can be done to improve the delivery from the saucer kick out?
Thanks for your help.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Mine plays pretty much the same. Nice game!

Thank you for saving that game from the colorbomb.

#3072 4 years ago
Quoted from TomDK:

29 years it was great to play a Whirlwind as it is with old school bulbs.
Now we are in the days to get 21 Cent LED´s from China and every "pinballenthusiast" feels like a gamedesigner while sticking cold white lightnings in the GI and horrible colors all over the pin.
I am not as stupid and dump as you believe and I also know what you mean with spotligts .. but why ?
WhiWi is **NOT** a dark game .... play an Alien and we talk about a dark game. So there is no , rely no , need for any LED in WhiWi ... nor in GI, nor in switched lamps and nor additional lamps.
Also .. no need for stadium lights .. I am over 50 yeras old, reading newspaper with glasses ... at least I wear glasses while playing pinball but still, no need for extra lightning.
So you can put in your WhiWi wehatever LED you want ... my beauty is still on bulbs like all my pins expect the ones which came with LEDs

What the hell is WhiWi ?! Are we all going to make up our own game abbreviations now?

#3075 4 years ago
Quoted from jmountjoy111:

I’m going to make my point here and be done with it. You pissed on LEDs but yet you only like incandescent. So in what world did you become the only authority on games? If you want incandescent put in incandescent. If you want LED put in LED. If you want colored GI then put it in! Who am I to judge? Who are you to judge? You clearly have your own opinion on your machines so who cares what someone else puts in their machine. I think all system 11 games need LEDs and extra spotlights. You don’t. Oh well....

You're both wrong!

Just picked up a really bad project whirlwind, made a thread for it if anyone wants to follow along: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/whirlwind-back-from-the-depths-
Does anyone have a source for new ramp flaps? my ramps don't look too bad but the flaps are rusty.
Anyone know what's up with this right spinner? [quoted image]
Also, long shot, but does anyone have a spare side ramp habitrail sitting around? Would rather not go to the expense of having this one rechromed. Or has anyone powdercoated theirs and have some pics of how it looks in another color?

I think my original was a white tapered rubber, this one came in a new kit. I don't really know what the purpose is.

#3218 4 years ago
Quoted from herg:

I'm sure I'm not the first to have this happen, but this is a first for me, in 20 years of owning pins.
I was in the middle of a good game, and clunk![quoted image]

OMG, same post broke off of mine a few months ago. I had never heard of that happening!

#3231 4 years ago
Quoted from TomDK:

In this flyer there is a clear starpost with a white rubber to see !
Copy the picture on your computer and zoom in ...
No tapered rubber on WhiWi !

It's a tapered rubber in that flyer picture. Just to the left of the black post sleeve under the pop bumper. You may be looking too far left. It is a white rubber that flares out towards the top.

Anyone have a whirlwind spinner for sale or know where to find one? I have what I think is a decent replacement enroute, but I'd prefer the original.

#3330 4 years ago

Omg. How much is this gonna cost me?!

Well..... If that's the case, I guess it won't cost me a thing

Quoted from Initiative:

Hello WW club! I'm a new-ish owner of this magnificent machine and have what might be a rather naive question, but need to ask anyway. So the previous owner put in pinballpro speakers, and from visual inspection, does not appear to have been wired up correctly - based on my own installation of this brand of speakers on other system 11 machines.
Anyway, if I'm playing a longer game, scoring 10M+ points, I've notice that the volume of music and sfx is low at the start of the game and progressively gets louder as the game goes on. My question is - is this by design from software, or am I possibly dealing with a speaker wiring issue that I need to correct?
I own several other system 11s (big guns, cyclone, BK2K) and have never seen a game's volume get progressively louder during a game, thus the question to the WW experts out there.
Thanks in advance!

It's not by design. If it's inconsistent, the volume pot can get flaky (located left side inside cabinet).

Making that combo should be automatic jackpot!!

I did the wire starts at the relay board as shown in this first pic (I believe it's the very top wire at W1) while the other end is just dangling in space as shown in the second pic - which is what created my initial question where should it be attached.
[quoted image][quoted image]

I just followed mine. My top wire where your brown one goes branches off of those other wires and goes up to connector j11 it is a really long connector and this is the only wire and is the far-right connection. Boom!
