Joined the club last Saturday. It plays but needs some love. So stoked to have one finally!

Picked up a whirlwind last weekend and have it playing solid after rebuilding the power supply and some small adjustments. My top glass on the display is somewhat dim even after sealing the 39k resistors. I will be replacing the display sometime soon but curious to see some phots of rottendog vs xpin. Wondering if the blue looks any good?

Quoted from zene10:

ebay.com link » 3 X 12 2 Pk New Micro Prism Holographic Fishing Lure Tape In 16 Colors

Awesome that will work. Thanks!

I’d be interested as well

Can anybody point me in the right direction as far as finding a replacement spinner for my WW. Mine is currently beat to crap and would like a new one. I ordered new orange foil so I’m good on the decal part.

I don’t own this game but I am actively looking for one to come up near me. What did you do? I can’t tell, it’s probably looking me right in the face though.

Check the ball cap

Yeah, so I hammered off TWO - 3 Way Combos this evening. Big deal, I once went probably 8 months without one for sure, so pretty pumped

So very satisfying!!

Quoted from Jimmyhonda:

I must be terrible at WW, because I didn’t even remember what the 3-way convo is. Any insight out there? Thanks all!

Quoted from woody76:

alright, I got me a full topper assembly. The fan motor did not come with wiring harness. Looks like to 2 wires go from motor to board. Does it matter which wire goes to which lug on the motor?
I attached a picture I found on the forum.[quoted image]

Polarity should not matter.

It’s a shaded pole motor and is driven by AC power. The only way to reverse a shaded pole type motor is to disassemble and rotate/flip the stator 180 degrees then reassemble.

That connector is waaay too big tho. I actually have a 6 pin version on hand which I have taken a pic of next to the board and the IDC one.[quoted image]

I'm in the club baby! Now I can "Feel the Power of the Wind!" And I've even got grippy disc decals. Not sure if they're original or not, but they look and grip good.

Didn’t take you long to find one, at least since you had messaged me.

Has anybody thought of a hardtop for WW? I have a players whirlwind and would love to have that option over replacing the whole playfield.

Looking for this specific plastic if anyone has one in good shape they’d be willing to sell.

Anyone have pictures of a whirlwind with the white display. Looking at going with one of the “dimbass” DIY options as a fun project.

Quoted from DumbAss:

After two years of being out on loan at a friend's work place (probably not played much during the stay-at-home period) my baby has finally come home! My friend decided to join the ranks of the "great resignation" so the machine was returned. I built a white alphanumeric display for it but the machine sat folded up (but on legs) for about two weeks while I finished board builds for others. She hasn't been home for four years now. I miss playing this machine.
This evening I finally got around to setting up the machine. Needs work and adjustment but it still plays! Whirlwind is my "desert island" machine. For me that's an even higher rating than "grail". "Feel the power of the wind" - it never gets old to me.

Here's the display installed in the machine. I installed 82 Ohm resistors and the white is visible but not super bright. I guess 68 Ohm or even 47 Ohm resistors would increase the brightness but at the cost of potentially reducing the life span of the LEDs.
[quoted image]

I bought the white displays and board from you Victor. I just got it installed the other night. I really enjoyed the project and think it’s looks great in white! Thanks!

Quoted from RobDutch:

The owner of the Whirlwind I'm working on wants to have lights and flashers inside of the topper. Did anyone in this group ever do this or have advice for me?
Thinking of installing a few sockets with leds hooked up to the gi, and flashers hooked up to the backbox flashers. Should these flashers be leds so the wiring/boards/connectors won't get damaged?

Just recently added Led flashers to my topper and wired then in using Todd Tucky from TNT’s tip. Skip to 17 minute mark for his instructions.

I used Twilight zone door flasher panel
Mod boards from DumbAss and installed one on either side of the fan.

I believe you need to look at the chip you have in the board. My board has a 6116 chip so I would stick with a 6116. You’ll have to check your ram at U25 and see whether it’s a 6116 or 6124, then order accordingly. I haven’t gotten around to installing NVRam in my WW yet but plan to order one from pin tech as I’ve had good luck with using them in other games.

Does it go down the lock lane and immediately kick back out?
Those switches can get bent up and stick close causing it not to properly lock. When I first got my whirlwind the lock lane switches where all bent up and needed adjusting so they wouldn’t catch on the switch slot.

#4454 1 year ago
Quoted from mark532011:

yes and The wires on the switches were all bent out of shape when I got it so I bent them back into a usable shape but didn't think to actually test the switches (dumb)
The self test shows the switches are actually bad so I have a new set on order.

If they move freely through the switch slot but still show closed on test then yes you will need a new switch or switches. It will be a good day when you resolve your issue as it will completely change the fun factor of your game.

Quoted from Elicash:

Guys, question for Whirlwind owners who installed NVRAM -
Who did you order from?
And was it plug and play?
I am looking at pinitech website, and its a little confusing - different version for System 11B and later? Or you need to jumper something?
I already have that chip socketed on my MPU. So it should be easy, but I want to make sure I am ordering the right one.

I just installed my pintech 6116 NVRAM in my CPU the other night. Had to pull the chip and install the socket, but fired right up and stored my setting without any problems. Pintech seem to be the cheapest available option and I have been pleased with the two I have installed so far. I also have one for a high speed game to do as well.

Quoted from Elicash:

Guys, anyone have some extra sound ROM's laying around?
Or have access to one of those ROM burners?
Prices on ebay, pinball vendors are crazy. Matt's Basement Arcade = $90. I would happily pay someone to burn me one... I just don't want to pay $90.

For a game that has classic music and callouts… that 2.0 kit just feels like a downgrade. I don’t get the donuts and zombies. I’m excited about stormblasters. If I do buy a kit, applejuice will get my money.

I agree with this, applejuice’s “storm blasters” seems like more of the 2.0 whirlwind. I’m on the fence of converting mine, but would definitely do the storm blaster route.

Quoted from zene10:

I've got one. Heavily discounted. Can ship in small USPS flat rate box. Shipped from Dallas to Tucson prior to TPF. Luckily, it was fully insured. I specifically had the UPS store pack it themselves because I expected it not to survive.
