Quoted from punkin:

You have to remember that many of us don't give a flying fuck what other people we don't know think is a better game than another game.

You have to also remember that many of us don't give a flying f*** what you don't give a flying f*** about!

Chiiiill, chilllllll, chill, its all for fun, I didn't start the poll, I am enjoying it.

Yeah, I think polls and lists and top 10s are a lot of fun, and they can provoke some good discussion. But to each their own!

I'm in the club baby! Now I can "Feel the Power of the Wind!" And I've even got grippy disc decals. Not sure if they're original or not, but they look and grip good.

Quoted from BenB:

Didn’t take you long to find one, at least since you had messaged me.

No, you're right it didn't! I got lucky. I sent out a few messages to WW owners around the same time. And a pinsider from West Des Moines, just happened to be thinking about changing up his collection when he got my message. So it worked out. Beautiful weather on Saturday, so that worked out too.

All right, so I've owned WW for about a week. And I think I've finally got everything dialed in how I want. I've got the slope at about 6.8 - 7.0, and it feels about right. When I bought it, the outlanes were at their most-closed position, which again feels about right. Game times can still be quite short, and I still get the occasional outlane drane so that seems fine.

So for my plunge, I could NOT get it to launch around the upper orbit no matter how far I pushed up the guide. In the end, I had to just remove the post completely, which allowed me to get the correct bend and not have the ball deflect off the post. Normally I wouldn't remove a post like that, but in this case, I think that the edge where the two guides meet is protected enough that I can't really see a ball striking that exact spot easily, and certainly not straight from a flipper. And the nice thing is, that the post can easily be re-installed and the changes reversed.

I love the sneaky reference to Earthshaker hidden in the upper left corner. I-80, Visit the Fault. Very cool easter egg. Also, can anyone tell me what a "Mechanical Finger in Dike" is? Jack Skalon got special credit for it. Also, I'm not sure what decals these are, but I'm very happy with the overall grippiness of them. The discs grab the ball, but not too much. And the decals seem to have a kind of rubbery stipple-pattern of bumps all over the surface.

Last notes. I cleaned and waxed the playfield, but it played so fast with wax over the mylar that I had to break out the naptha and remove as much from the mylared areas as possible. From now on, I'm only waxing over the actual wood areas. Lesson learned!

Also, my cellar kickout is pretty consistent, so that I just hold the flipper up and catch the ball without too much trouble, if desired. No flipper hop from the inlanes, and very few rejects from the ramp lock. In fact I had none until I waxed, and now only very occasionally on a really fast shot. And the saucer-release is also good and rolls to the upper flipper nicely. And also, the ball doesn't seem to be re-directed or have it's path disrupted by the discs when they're not spinning, so that's good too!
So yeah, overall she's running great. No real complaints!

Say, quick question...when is the 100k flasher next to the billboard drops supposed to light up? Since I've owned the game, I don't think I've ever seen it light up. It does flash during the solenoid test, so I know the bulb/socket is fine. The other two insert flashers (100k and 3000 spinner) do seem to flash occasionally, but it's kinda hard to tell because they also have normal lamps under those inserts.

So when is this flasher supposed to trigger? And if it's not flashing when it's supposed to during gameplay, but is flashing during the solenoid test, what could be wrong? A diode or a transistor?

Quoted from Initiative:

I noticed the same. It doesn't light in attract or EOG sequence. I do notice it flash for a split second when you drop all 3 targets though.

Quoted from nvu4prod:

I maybe wrong, I believe it lights up or flashes when you the ball sweeps all 3 drop targets at the same time. Hence, the 100k points per sweep!

Next time I play, I'll watch the flasher more closely. Maybe it does flash for a second and I just miss it?

#3599 3 years ago

So it does flash, but only for like a split second when you sweep the drops. You almost have to look out for it especially just to notice it.

Quoted from mark532011:

I have to share.... I've been struggling with Whirlwind for months - I rarely even get to 1 million points. I just can't seem to get the side ball(s) to lock no matter what I try. The online videos make it seem so easy but I am unable to get it. So we get frustrated and play something else for awhile.
We were playing yesterday and my wife really hates the fan, so I looked up how to turn it off. I went into the front door options buttons but I can never remember which ones to hit and if the switch has to be manual or auto. so I am pushing them at random hoping to land in the right spot rather than digging out the manual - and I ended up in the test....and wouldn't you know it, the 3 switches on the outlane are showing as bad!!!
It could be the matrix, but a couple of switch replacements is pretty easy to do to start....hey, maybe we will start having fun with Whirlwind after all this time!

Yeah, there must be something funny going on with your game. As I've found Whirlwind to be one of the easiest and most relaxing pins that I've ever owned. Very fun, and not always a cake walk, but definitely one of the easier games I've played. Sonif you guys are having a lot if trouble with it, I'd venture to say that there must be some sort of mechanical fault going on.

So what do you mean by not being able to get the side-balls to lock? Can you elaborate? Do you mean that when the ramp flap is down, and the voice says to "Get to your homes. The storm is coming" that balls aren't locking on the left when you make the ramp shot? Does the ball just kick back out or something instead of staying locked?

Quoted from BenB:

I just installed my pintech 6116 NVRAM in my CPU the other night. Had to pull the chip and install the socket, but fired right up and stored my setting without any problems. Pintech seem to be the cheapest available option and I have been pleased with the two I have installed so far. I also have one for a high speed game to do as well. [quoted image]

I did this for my Elvira and the Party Monsters. Luckily, I have a desoldering gun, so that made the removal of the ram chip relatively easy.
