What is the combo?

#3906 3 years ago
Quoted from mark532011:

What is the combo?

Through the lower jets(yellow pop bumpers) to the upper flipper then with the upper flipper to the right of the side ramp back to the upper flipper then up the side ramp for a cool air raid siren and a measly 250k.

It is totally messily. Considering the difficulty/rarity in shooting the combo, it’s worth a minimum 1,000,000, probably more.

When I first hit it I did'nt know it existed. Scared the shit out of me. I thought the machine was frying itself.

Is there a way to pull out the playfield towards the front so I can get to the rear to take out ramps etc?

just tilt it back into the upright position and lift it straight up, then you can sit playfield back down on the metal pegs and pull it forward enough to work on upper playfield

#3911 3 years ago

The last photos of my cellars pre Cliffy. Thankfully the playfield looks pretty darn good but I don’t want that to change over time! I wish these posts were not such a pain to take off!

I was looking over my newly aquired Whirlwind and I noticed mine has a different left slingshot plastic than the reference shots. Instead of a hand casting lightning-bolts I have a woman getting her skirt blown up in the wind. Is this an alternate plastic or just something pulled from a different game? Seems like it fits the theme pretty good if its from another game.

Hey all, looking for some info.
System 11 legs all the same or was there a transition in there? I have two sets of legs, one set has the ribs 1/2 way down and the other has the full length ribs. Which ones go on a WW?

Edit: PinWiki just says originally chrome - ribbed. (doesn't specify either) unless these aren't Williams legs I have - the 1/2 ribbed I mean (but i'm sure they came off or at least with a PinBot I had

I have full ribs on both WW and ES. Not sure if they are correct. Be a fun fact to know!

Yeah, it’s my impression the full length are correct. Here’s the two sets though. I was hoping half was right because they’re in better shape and a LOT less elbow grease to get the lm in ship shape for my WW refurb

I’ve got full ribbed on WW and half rib on Taxi. I assume that means the half ribbed were from older games

yeah whirlwind used different legs than other system 11's

Is there a way to check 'total games played in lifetime' on the Whirlwind... or something like that ?

Thanks

It’s easy, the worst one for me was the regular cellar, it had a new reproduction post that had longer threading than the original and it took a minute to get but not that bad once that one was off.

Do I need to fully remove the ramp to gain access to the scoop?

No. All you have to do is remove the super cellar and cellar lights from the plastics they are attached to, remove the nuts holding the plastics down on one side, and then take out two posts, one for the super cellar and one for the cellar, the cliffy goes down into the hole and you will be able to tell when it’s secured, then reinstall post through the cliffy to hold in place.

Here’s the only posts you need to remove to get the scoop protectors in, and then leave the cellar lights connected but unscrewed

I am referring to the scoop under the ramp, that raises and lowers.
Think I may have to remove the return ramp aswell to allow space to install the side ramp protector.
The cellars are pretty simple.

There isn’t a cliffy for under the main ramp that I’m aware of. I got the complete set, which was the 4 pc set (2 cellars, side ramp, and shooter lane) if you are talking about something else for the ball eject under the main ramp then yes, to access that the entire main ramp needs to come out and can be done without removing the side ramp.

I have not opened my package yet but I will when I get home. I just assumed there was one for that scoop but I guess I was wrong.
There should be tho

You were right there is no protector for the scoop under the ramp, everything fit nicely, highly recommend them.

I put mirror blades in all my pins because I think they add so much depth and "flash" to the playfield. However I couldn't fit them into my WW. Did you have to modify them to get them in yours?

#3935 3 years ago

Yes, small bit of modification, they are hips plastic so cut really easy

Just joined the club this weekend.

Does anyone have a repro playfield they have sitting around and might want to let go?

My pf is in pretty good shape but am thinking a pf swap would be a good winter quarantine project...but would love to save a few $$ to motivate me to do it. (This would be my first one)

If not, a light refurb and lots of playing are the plan

pm me!

RESEARCH the playfield you'd swap with. Many a horror story of holes and etc. not being lined up. You will have to work for this. Check some resto threads.

I read them. Definitely would be a labor of love A good winter project for me and my dad and/or kids.

But i did just get a good look at my playfield. It's really in good shape. I have a few inserts to reseat and some mylar to replace. so that's probably what i'll end up doing as I have this machine, a big guns, and cleaning / waxing of the rest of the fleet on the schedule for the winter.

If you’re gonna swap it I would highly suggest looking for an original. It makes things WAY easier when everything lines up. Here’s my before and after.

Second this. I sent out my original playfield to captain Neo for a full restore before I swapped it. 3/4 through the restoration process, both CPR and Mirco announced their repros, and I kinda felt silly for going through the extra trouble to restore the original.

Fast forward to Mirco playfields having missing insert decal artwork and CPR having that weird line in the stippling effect, and I’m really glad I went through with the original playfield.

Are there any good repros? I have an older CPR repro which I'm planning on using in a resto. Any guide on what issues each had? My original playfield could be fixed, but I love the simplicity of using a repro.

#3944 3 years ago

The minor issues I have with my CPR... dimples were sometimes in the right location. Pretty much plan on using a pick to make new dimples and mount up the hardware. Honestly, 99% of that was pretty easy to do. The hardest thing the line up was the parts for the kick out hole. Everything else was pretty simple to center up.

The major issues.... some premade through holes are not in the best location. The left inlane ball guide, just like the original, is places so that I have ball hop on the left flipper. I can loosen the hardware, shift the left guide up some and it the issue solved for a short while. And then there is was a poorly placed through hole where the back 2 left lane orbits merge. The post would of been located in lower/inner orbit, the ball would hit and no chance of looping around to the right side. I made an offset post and that solved that.

So mine are actually two different playfields. I still have the crap one to hang if desired. The other one came with the game when I got it and the person who had it before me had it clear coated. There are a few signs of wear but not really. Cellar holes looked good, colors are great. Only signs of wear are very hard to see but it looked 100x better than the original in there. Both of them are Williams playfields though.

maybe the right tactic is to get a beat but salvageable playfield, have it restored and clearcoated, then do the swap?

#3947 3 years ago
Quoted from Flynnyfalcon:

I've heard good things about the first run of CPR playfields, but I believe that there were misalignment issues even then with some inserts in the artwork (specifically in the green SW arrow above the left ramp). It was the second run that had the horizontal line in the stippling effect below the compass. From what I've read, the new Mirco runs now have the insert decal artwork in place, but I can't be sure.

new whirlwind owner here....just got it turned on an hour ago...woohoo, it works!

quick question. During the lamp test, not one of the large lamps (505?) in the back cpme on. It seems strange that they would all 5 be burned out so I thought I would check. Is there something I should look for, or simply replace them?

That’s the easiest option, don’t know if it’s the cheapest or not. It will certainly play better, and the colors seems off on the reproduction playfields too. Way darker than original when I got the game I was given a mostly populated crap playfield and a the “new” playfield had the pop bumper bodies on and the cellars and spinners and that was it. This is how I received the “new” playfield with the game. It’s not perfect but it looks way better than an average one.
