One of Todd Tuckey’s ( TNT Amusements) whirlwind videos, of which there are at least a couple, addresses this issue. In his example it was a cold solder joint, not a fuse.

Lol, without being a complete shit here, isn’t every one of Todd’s repairs a cold solder?!? Lol
Quoted from oropuro:but now my spinners wont turn on? I noticed some hacking at what looks like a board attached to the motor,
The spinners work through the sound overlay board. Check to see if your thunderbolt flashers work and the blower motor. If they’re all dead, check the ribbon cable that runs between it and the sound board. Had the same issue. Reseating everything resolved my problem.
Quoted from northerndude:Morning reminder to go over if you haven’t yet and vote WW for the consolation bracket for games! Wow down to BSD by like a couple (literally) votes
You have to remember that many of us don't give a flying fuck what other people we don't know think is a better game than another game.
Quoted from punkin:You have to remember that many of us don't give a flying fuck what other people we don't know think is a better game than another game.

Chiiiill, chilllllll, chill, its all for fun, I didn't start the poll, I am enjoying it.

Yeah, I think polls and lists and top 10s are a lot of fun, and they can provoke some good discussion. But to each their own!
Quoted from DakotaMike:You have to also remember that many of us don't give a flying f*** what you don't give a flying f*** about!
Now you're getting it.
Quoted from DakotaMike:I'm in the club baby! Now I can "Feel the Power of the Wind!" And I've even got grippy disc decals. Not sure if they're original or not, but they look and grip good.

Didn’t take you long to find one, at least since you had messaged me.
Quoted from BenB:Didn’t take you long to find one, at least since you had messaged me.
No, you're right it didn't! I got lucky. I sent out a few messages to WW owners around the same time. And a pinsider from West Des Moines, just happened to be thinking about changing up his collection when he got my message. So it worked out. Beautiful weather on Saturday, so that worked out too.
All right, so I've owned WW for about a week. And I think I've finally got everything dialed in how I want. I've got the slope at about 6.8 - 7.0, and it feels about right. When I bought it, the outlanes were at their most-closed position, which again feels about right. Game times can still be quite short, and I still get the occasional outlane drane so that seems fine.
So for my plunge, I could NOT get it to launch around the upper orbit no matter how far I pushed up the guide. In the end, I had to just remove the post completely, which allowed me to get the correct bend and not have the ball deflect off the post. Normally I wouldn't remove a post like that, but in this case, I think that the edge where the two guides meet is protected enough that I can't really see a ball striking that exact spot easily, and certainly not straight from a flipper. And the nice thing is, that the post can easily be re-installed and the changes reversed.
IMG_20200425_183207 (resized).jpgIMG_20200425_183935 (resized).jpgI love the sneaky reference to Earthshaker hidden in the upper left corner. I-80, Visit the Fault. Very cool easter egg. Also, can anyone tell me what a "Mechanical Finger in Dike" is? Jack Skalon got special credit for it. Also, I'm not sure what decals these are, but I'm very happy with the overall grippiness of them. The discs grab the ball, but not too much. And the decals seem to have a kind of rubbery stipple-pattern of bumps all over the surface.
IMG_20200425_183704 (resized).jpgIMG_20200425_183401 (resized).jpgIMG_20200425_183247 (resized).jpgLast notes. I cleaned and waxed the playfield, but it played so fast with wax over the mylar that I had to break out the naptha and remove as much from the mylared areas as possible. From now on, I'm only waxing over the actual wood areas. Lesson learned!
Also, my cellar kickout is pretty consistent, so that I just hold the flipper up and catch the ball without too much trouble, if desired. No flipper hop from the inlanes, and very few rejects from the ramp lock. In fact I had none until I waxed, and now only very occasionally on a really fast shot. And the saucer-release is also good and rolls to the upper flipper nicely. And also, the ball doesn't seem to be re-directed or have it's path disrupted by the discs when they're not spinning, so that's good too!
So yeah, overall she's running great. No real complaints!

"Finger in dike" imo is a referal to "Hansje Brinker", a dutch kid who stuck his finger in the dike to prevent the backland from flooding. A sort of a life saver in his own little way.
put the rotten dog mpu in and get a lot of speaker hum during attract mode, crazy loud. gonna try the plastic washers, anything else anyone can suggest?
happy friday all. Does anyone know what the original design intent was for a clean, right orbit shot - specifically, is the ball supposed to run through the lower pops to the flippers, or is the ball meant to hit and bang around the lower pops on its way down?

I don't know anything about the original intent, but every lawlor game with a through the pops shot hits the pops and bangs around, so I'd assume that's normal. I don't think I even know any non-lawlor games that don't do that
Quoted from zacaj:hits the pops and bangs around, so I'd assume that's normal.
thank ya - and i was afraid that might be the case. im a new owner of this great game, and couldn't remember after not playing this for 20+ years. anyway, the orbit shot on my goes clean through the pops - half the time I have to skillfully save an sdtm with the right flipper, other half of time time ball goes sdtm. I'm being punished for a designed shot and it's driving me up a wall!

Can you take a picture of where the orbit enters the pops or something? Thinking back to shopping mine and I can't understand how that's even possible if everything is set up correct
low lech solution here - I shimmed out the guide rail away from the side, up near the rollover switch you see in the picture above. ball hits pops 100% of the time now. small victory for today, its miller time.
Quoted from yaksplat:On my mirco playfield refurb, the ball would fly through the pops and just like yours would nearly go SDTM. I ended up pulling a screw out of the end of the guide and it now bounces off the rubber and into the pops as intended.
Quoted from joust23:New to the club and I acquired an original plastic kit that seems to have a few pieces I don’t know where they go.[quoted image]
After I refurbished my Whirlwind I had my old plastics plus a few leftovers from the new reproduction plastics. I decided to put the old and new extra clouds to use in the backboard area.
IMG_8256 (resized).JPGIMG_8257 (resized).JPGIMG_8342 (resized).JPGI have a recurring issue with my cellar door kick out. It works fine about 95% of the time. Every few games it will go to kick out the ball and you just hear a click from under the playfield when the coil is supposed to fire. No ball movement. Then the game goes into ball search but the cellar kick out doesn’t fire.
If you turn off the game, lift the playfield and remove the ball, everything is back to normal when you turn it back on until the same thing happens again.
I’ve replaced the entire kick out assembly including the coil, no difference.

When this happens does the game do the kick out warning sound with the flasher activating or does it just sit and do ball search?
Does anyone have the pinside user name for Rock Custom Mods?
I have questions about his Whirlwind topper led mod.
Thanks

No the flasher fires and the noise happens as usual. Then just a click from I assume the coil but it doesn't fire. After that it's like the coil doesn't fire during ball search either. If you turn off the game and turn it back on, the coil still won't fire during the pinball missing search. If you turn the game off and remove the ball, then everything is back to normal until it happens again.

I’m restoring my WW right now and making my own LED setup inside the fan.
I Will be referring to shanetastics WW thread for it if I remember correctly.

I assume the cellar is what’s referred to as the “under playfield kickbig” if that’s the case, you could have a transistor that’s on the way out and is getting “stuck” closed. Q7 is the driving transistor for that solenoid so since you’ve replaced everything including the coil already this is the thing that allows the coil A path to ground and fire. If it’s not able to open sometimes it would give off a weak click and nothing would happen with the coil. Test Q7 and see if it’s values are lower than surrounding transistors. It is probably out of spec which allows it to work sometimes and others not have enough to work properly.

Ok will do, thanks!
When you go through your Whirlwind or other system 11 etc game... do you usually replace the 26 pin cable.... even if it works ok?
Quoted from scampcamp:When you go through your Whirlwind or other system 11 etc game... do you usually replace the 26 pin cable.... even if it works ok?
I've not bothered to do so with any of the ribbon cables on my pins. No issues to report, so I see no reason to replace.

Never had a need to. The only thing i've done is repinned and replaced any yellowed connectors.

OK, thanks guys. I was watching a 3 part series on a guy going through a Whirlwind & it looked like he was doing it as part of routine maintenance.

Sand papers 600-1000-1200, a buffing wheel on white paste...and patience!
100x Times cheaper than chrome but you have to work 100x more! Labor of love
