Quoted from Jimmyhonda:

Hello everyone, I just installed Game Blades on my Whirlwind. I HIGHLY suggest you use the Soapy water spray method, ESPECIALLY on system 11 games with very minimal side clearance. Just put a drop of soap in a spray bottle with water and spray the back of the Game Blade. With the playfield up, slide the Game Blade into position. The soapy water allows you to readjust over and over until you get it into position. Make sure you you spray it quite a bit because if it drys on you, it’s tougher to adjust. Honestly, this method was very easy with minimal water drips. I recommend it for all game Installs. Just wipe up any water drips with a towel and your done.

Looks great

Just finished up the all new decals on my Whirlwind cabinet. The outside was repaired/repainted and die cut decals applied to all sides. I’m very happy with the results!

Thanks! Now I have to hope that the CPR playfield doesn’t fall apart! I keep staring at those chips behind the center posts hoping they don’t get any bigger. Haven’t seen that happen anywhere else. The only other thing is dimples everywhere from gameplay. Not a big deal since you can only see them at a certain angle, just no more chipping please!

#2156 5 years ago

Random question but I feel this is the Forum to ask it....anyone have just the set of header decals for the cabinet? Both sides of my cab and coin door are fine...header was very poorly touched up. PM me if you do. Thanks

Backbox, you mean? (I see 'header', and I keep thinking of something baseball-related..)

Yes, backbox

Yeah, I don't have a lot of faith in this clear.

Mine is chipped at the left cellar entrance. I bought the pin with cliffys that were not yet installed, I was waiting to do the job during some other work, wish I had

Is this with a new CPR PF?

#2162 5 years ago

not the newest run, but the previous run I believe maybe if that makes sense?, I think the PF swap was done over a year ago. I got a hold of the pin in Nov.

I'm seriously debating depopulating mine and sending it back out to be redone. The weather is improving here and there are enough locals that can spray it correctly. I can only imagine how many more "popping off clear" stories we are going to get as more people assemble.

#2165 5 years ago

Here’s mine.

I don't think this is your fault at all. Poor CC job.

#2170 5 years ago

Really sorry to hear about these issues. I’ve held off on replacing my decent non DP one. The lack of dimpling was annoying but I can work with that. But this clear seems way too fragile. I love that they’re doing what they do but between the first run clouding problems (which if that’s only issue I’m ok with), and now all the newer issues, I’m considering sending it out to be cleared right.

Quoted from Billy16:

+1 that is NOT normal. That is a bad curing job on the clear. I'm also fairly certain that may be from the latest run.

#2172 5 years ago

I don't think there is really a way to fix it. The clear is not bonded the artwork, so another layer isn't going to help much.

Ugh, that is exactly what I have been experiencing and what CPR refuses to respond to. The clear and paint literally explode off of the PF. Nothing feels like it is adhered to. I wrote them three times about it because I have not seen it before and I got radio silence.

#2174 5 years ago

clear likes to grab onto base coats that have recently flashed, and dried clear that has been wet sanded. I can't think of a good way to prep a playfield honestly... just hope for the best?

I wonder of they use any sort of flex additive? Obviously wood moves

Sadly it seems unless you got the wrong playfield, you’ll get radio silence. They’re not doing the customer service that they once had.

Very bad luck !
You can send the edges with 1000 sandpaper flat and install a cliffy, it will last the next years !! Maybe a little peace of mylar to support.
Bad luck but easy fixable !

Quick tech bulletin for anyone moving a whirlwind:

Unplug the fan/discs before you put the head down (top middle inside of head) -- I moved mine for the first time, and found out the hard way -- bent pins!

Hey all.
New club member. Usual broken plastics. Don't really want to order a full set. Almost all of the plastic is good, including the slings.
I ordered cliffy's and protectors, but buying a full set seems like a waste. I really only need like 5-6 new pieces.
Advice?

Yes, It can be. Some days I'm off my game and have trouble breaking 20m.. some days I average 50m... feels so good to get a good run going though!

I can’t even break 10M most games and my highest score is only 23M. I either really suck or I’m not playing it right.

All about strategy really. Getting into multiball by starting quick multiball raises the jackpot value. Multiball management is key, keeping the other ball(s) on your flippers for as many tries at the jackpot as you can. Also getting all the extra balls, mega door awards, and tolls tolls tolls

I have hard time controlling multiballs. Can’t seem to get comfortable with it. The highest scores I’ve achieved were when the ramp switch was broke and the flap wasn’t going up and down correctly. I made it to super mega bonus that game, and also collected a few extra balls. So I know those are a key part to high scores. But when I look at the Pinside high scores list, it’s hard for me to fathom how those guys score so high

What should I be seeing when I get “Drop Target at Maximum” award?

#2190 5 years ago
Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

What should I be seeing when I get “Drop Target at Maximum” award?

I think if you are getting over 10m you are doing pretty good.

The only cellar awards I even think about going for is extra balls, the million shot, and quick multiball. Locking two balls and then activating quick multiball will light millions AND million plus on the jackpot ramp. All the other awards I will shoot the cellar to get it and then just move on. I always prioritize the cellar when lit. Thats an easy two million for the mega door and an easy return to the left flipper. Mega door bonus will also light another extra ball and quick multi!

Extra balls earned with tolls will stay lit if you drain, extra balls lit with the cellar will turn off if you drain, so you miss your chance, keep that in mind.

After the first multiball it gets harder to lock balls and you have to hit the jackpot ramp to start multiball (or start it easy with quick multiball).... so capitalizing on jackpots early on is key. After you get the third multiball it seems way harder to keep racking up good points.

Try pushing the right flipper button in half way to just use the upper flipper too. Sometimes it's easier to shoot under the ramp with the left flipper and then do that. Shooting under the ramp with the right flipper isn't very consistant for me.

@orangegsx: thanks for the pointers. I also watched Bowen video last night to pick up some extra strategy nuggets. I usually don’t watch them because a) I like to try and figure out games myself, and b) watching him makes me realize how poor of a player I am, but I digress. Played a couple of warmup games this morning and I was able to put up 15M score. Game is still tough and gotta hit that side ramp consistently, for sure. Now back to playing to see if I can top my all time best of 21M....

I don't struggle to hit the ramp too bad, still a tough one for me, BUT I struggle to get the ball ALL the way around it, I'm 50/50 I bet having to roll back down on me

Spinners aren’t spinning. When I run the diagnostic it makes a slight whirring sound but no movement of the spinners. Thoughts?

#2194 5 years ago

Picked this one up for $200. The previous owner put 400 plays on it over the course of 20 years. All the boards are flawless, playfield is good. No wear on it but the super, skill, and lock arrow inserts are raised. Some plastics are cracked, cab is in decent shape. I'm not sure what I'm going to do to it yet. Might try and pull off the mylar, fix the inserts, new plastics, new rubbers and maybe new posts. Any suggestions are welcome. Really enjoying the game, more than I thought I would.

Had same issue. See #2 from this post. You may need to tighten your set screws.

$200?! Seriously?! Why can't I EVER find deals like this? My suggestion is to NOT touch the Mylar at all. It will lift up the paint. Also....KEEP IT. I'm on my third WW. This is a hot title for a damn good reason- it's flat out fun. Enjoy!
