If anyone has any use for any of this PM me. It's all new except some of the insert decals were used so it is not a full set.

Honestly, I'll say that when it comes to plastics for this machine you won't have a choice if you're looking right now. I have had to order from Germany, Australia and the UK for all of my plastics and my lift ramp. The only thing that you will definitely find in the States are the sling plastics. I saw a pretty big stack of them at a booth this weekend at Pinfest.

Yeah, the slings pop up regularly here and there, but the other 2 will be tough, I will go to AU or Europe if need be, just wanted to put feelers out here at home first. Somebody somewhere has a full set to sell, just gotta flush them out!

How much were they? I completely missed seeing them. Assuming they were at the booth to the right when you first walked in.

I didn't check price since I already have a good set. They were at the booth across from Pinball Doctor or something like that it was called

For anyone that needs plastics from shops in Europe I can/might be of help to you...

Since i'm going for a weeks holiday to NYC/Manhattan in the second week of June I can bring stuff over for pick-up or further US transport. For details about date and possible sizes/weights you can PM me. I'll try to get back to you asap.

Where did you find them?

I went to the Rottendog page (Mine is RD not Pinscore) and started checking all of the sites of their distributers and happened to find one that was in stock. I was going to let everyone know but when I went back, right after I ordered, it showed out of stock so I think I got the last one they had. But here is where it was.

I got my restored playfield from Captain Neo a week or so ago. He did an extraordinary job. I would recommend him very highly. This was a tier 2 restoration.

Before:
ww_lower2_(resized).JPGww_lower2_(resized).JPG
ww_upper_(resized).JPGww_upper_(resized).JPG

After:
wwrest_(resized).jpgwwrest_(resized).jpg

The after images do not do the playfield justice. Everything looks bright and vibrant, and the clearcoat is like a sheet of perfect glass. The man works miracles.

#1067 7 years ago

What did that cost? and how long did it take? I always assumed that much work and craftsmanship would cost WAY more than a repro playfield!

#1068 7 years ago

I'll second that! Captain Neo restored my F-14 Tomcat playfield. He does awesome work!

He was even able to correct the worn away "wood pattern" on the compass to near perfection. He sorta blew my mind.

I was quoted at $650 originally for the restoration, but opted to have him correct some inserts, so the final price was $725, if I recall correctly. Start to finish took around 2 months I believe.

For that price why didn't they redo your white areas? Those areas need to be whitened again to make your lighting perfect ,and even with white leds the areas will show as being yellowed. I completely redo all of my whites on all of my restorations.

That's a tier 3 restoration I believe. Next level, more $$.

That'd be a tier 3 job. Plus, in person, the white areas are still pretty white. Like I said, the pictures here really don't do the restoration any type of justice at all. I think the auto white balance and the lighting I took the pictures in gave everything an orange/yellow look to it.

Also, mind you, I sent out my playfield well before they announced the CPR re-prints, otherwise I would've just gone with one of those. Hindsight is 20/20. I still pre-ordered a CPR pf though. I'll use the restored one in my game, and keep the CPR one around to restore another WW down the road. Whirlwind is worth it to me.

#1073 7 years ago

This thing was ragged big time when I got it. I honestly think that it was routed and never, ever serviced except for when something broke. And even then it was probably rigged up. It looked to have never been cleaned and the balls may as well have been rocks with all of the wear that they caused. I started the restoration back in February/March and I am in the home stretch. I wanted to show you guys what I started with. It's not pretty and what you don't see in the first pic is buried under everything on top. Someone did one hell of a hack on the interconnect board. They epoxied the lift ramp to the main ramp when the screws and nuts would have been enough to do the job. Somehow lost the deflector plate for the upkick area underneath the lift ramp so they stuffed it with paper to stop the ball from going through there and then they used plaster to fix the commonly broken corner on entry to the left ramp.

Has anyone installed mirror blades on their whirlwind? How does it look? If you have can you share a picture. I'm still trying to figure out if I want to get mirror blades or pinblade decals for my restore.

Thanks.

Quoted from Pmaino:

I haven't seen a Whirlwind with mirror blades yet, but I've seen a few with the decals. Personally, even without seeing the mirror blades, I'd easily prefer the look of them. The design of the decals make the playfield too busy looking, in my opinion.

I've yet to see a game that didn't look brilliant with mirror blades.

#1082 7 years ago

Yea I'm a bigger fan of mirror blades. If anyone has pictures of it installed on theirs I would appreciate it.

Anyone have a Whirlwind CPR playfield they no longer need? I'm looking. On the list for the next run but who knows how long of a wait I'm in for.

Cool^^ but why no tensioning leaf on the EOS switches?

#1088 7 years ago

Seems like when I asked around a few years ago no one would touch my sys11 playfield because of the lacquer they used on them back then. I was told that it would essentially melt away the paint if it was clear coated...

From what I see here that isn't the case. Man those playfields look great... nice work!

I'm guessing that I will just have to wait until the CPR run...

Hey guys I've got an issue exactly what holes are these taller posts supposed to go into? I have one left after assembly and it is to tall for the hole that it is going into. I must have gotten it switched where a shorter one now resides but I can't tell. Everything looks even now I've got an empty hole with a post thats to long for it. Note the gap between the jewel andthe bottom hex of the post

I've been doing a restoration of my whirlwind and thought I'd share some pictures. It's amazing how a new CPR playfield and NOS plastics can make this game shine. Top of the playfield has been swapped along with all the mechs. The wiring harness should be going on this weekend. I can post more picture if people want.

The playfield of my whirlwind wasn't even that bad but after 26 years of play a new one looks so beautiful. I've got a new cabinet on the way and will post some pics of that when it arrives.

Does anyone have any interest in my old playfield and cabinet for a restoration? Let me know I can post some pictures if necessary.

You folks who've installed an LED OCD board: where did you mount it? The backbox is so crammed the only safe place I could find was the top of the backbox. Unfortunately it's no easy to connect the USB cable and then I worry about it soaking in all the heat rising up there.

The right side seems open, but potentially able to interfere with the lightboard latches and such and I didn't want to risk a short. Some factory labels were also in the way and I didn't want to obscure, damage, or move them since my WW is a very clean all-original.

Anyone have any insight to share?

I will say the LED OCD made a HUGE improvement... way more than when I had it on Space Shuttle!

#1093 7 years ago

Nice job everyone with the playfield swaps! I did not take mine to that level, but I did finally get my game back online. Mylar pulled, new side rails, drops, standup targets, cliffy set, CPR plastics.

My guess is that topper just aged that way - maybe exposed to the sun?

#1097 7 years ago

Anyone have any gi led recommendations? Having a tough time deciding warm or cool white. Dont want to color blast it, but a few strategically placed might look nice. Ive seen some examples with warm on the bottom and cool up top, kinda digging that. Lets see your leds!

#1098 7 years ago

Definitely warm around the slings (since it's so orange/red), but you could do cool white everywhere else.

#1099 7 years ago

I did warm white frosted GI everywhere, looks good to me.

$1000? You did good! If the fan motor and disk motor work you've got a great deal. Plus, you got the golden topper! That entitles you to a tour of the Williams pinball factory! I hope Grampa Joe is up for it!
