Hello everyone,
I live in Germany and recently installed the topper assembly with the 24v 60hz motor from Marco's. When the fan runs, I smell a faint burning or electrical smell. The triacs seem fine, and the heatsink there isn't too hot. The smell is coming from the motor itself which gets quite hot while running. Am I missing something here? The fan doesn't seem to blow that hard really (like a small desk fan on low). I've been told that running a 60hz motor on 50 cycle EU power can cause inefficiency in the motor operation, and maybe that could explain the smell. But there were lots of Whirlwinds exported overseas and I've never heard of anyone else having to change their topper motor out.

Any inputs would be appreciated!

My original fan has a smell that I’d associate with a 30 year old fan. Smells like warmed up grease.

I'm dying here. I finally buttoned up my WW thinkign its finally done and gtf. Dam if it doesn't blow the fuse for the right flippers. I replaced the fuse. played 2 games now 2 right flippers are dead and the left barely moves?

What does everyone run for their extra ball settings? I'm finding the game is a touch too easy to win multiple extra balls and playing too long. Ideally, I'd like to be able to score just 2: one from the ramp award, and one from the cellar award. Anyone know if this is really possible?

I set all my games to 3 balls/game w/ 1 extra ball.

Making some progress from this almost from scratch build...

It's more like a small breeze than a Whirlwind !

Who is making the most accurate spinner decals? These are all over the place, wrong artwork and colors to not as rough as the originals to grab and fling the ball.

#5459 61 days ago

Where did you get your plastics? The one at the skill shot looks different.
I need that one and 1 other.
But I don't want to buy the whole replacement kit.

What is the most popular option for speaker upgrade? Seems like flipper fidelity is an option but without a new sound board it can only be so much of an improvement. Looks like pinsound and pinwoofer both don't list this game as supported. Are the only two options 1) roll your own or 2) flipper fidelity?

I added new larger speaks to the back box.
A new sub in the cabinet. Operated the sound from back to front with a bass controller

Total cost was probably under $100 I think.
Including the board to separate the bass. Would I go as big in the head again. Prob not.

Anyone know why the ramp would click during game play? Won’t go up. But does go up when it’s ready to lock ball under neath. Is this normal ?

Mine does this as well now. If you enter the test report you'll likely get "Ramp Down Error". That's what mine is doing. Ramp is down but not quite registering the (pain in the ass to get to) switch to indicate to the machine that the ramp is down. The game therefor keeps firring the release coil to lower the ramp.

So basically, the ramp down indicator switch will need to be adjusted.

Correct. It's a weird problem I had before replacing the switch (which is a pain as mentioned). From what I remember, and correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the tests indicate whether machine registers the ramp as being up or down, but even if that fails, the game will still correctly push the ramp up and down as it should during play. Even if the ramp is not recognized as being in the up or down position, it will continue to attempt to move it the right way several times which causes the clicking. It kind of reminds of of Funhouse where it pushes the balls out and continues to try even after all balls are released from the wheel.

Thanks for your input guys. I sprayed some contact spray on the ramp switch below, and that did the trick.

A while ago I started working on how to add a shaker motor.
I didn't want to spend $$$ on it. I like innovation, ingenuity and saving money. Also sharing and making things better and cheaper for the community. I'd rather share and share ideas and input. That's what makes things better imo

Anyway here are the two parts I think are my $50cad solution.

https://pinballleds.ca/index.php?route=product/product&path=114&product_id=746

Eddie at pinball led put some great diagrams to show how to use the board.
If you buy from him let him know I told you about him.

The motor
I had to open it and there are 2 weights.
I turned 1 of the 180 deg to make it unbalanced. That made it shake really good.

I just need to conect everything when I have a chance.
Find a good 12v source and a couple sources that will activate the motor.
I think when the storm starts and multipli ball

I'm replacing my single drop target opto board (wish I'd seen the NOS one PinballDr posted a couple months ago) and the one I got from Marco doesn't have the standoff bracket that is riveted to the original one. Has anyone dealt with this before? Can I live without this bracket or do I need to drill out the rivets on the old one and drill holes in the new one to rivet it in place?6PKD6DLXQuqaKHap1vTjqg (resized).jpg6PKD6DLXQuqaKHap1vTjqg (resized).jpg

You don’t need it

parts in Canada suck! I need 3 new eos flipper switches, no big deal pretty cheap. But the shipping is as much as the switches. I really wish someone would start using amazon or some other method so shipping wasn't so rediculous. Whirlwind is down untill I get them.
I guess I'll just focus on getting the shaker motor working.

The company I work for does global shipping out of the Philly area. Our international shipping cost pre covid was not great and post covid it is just nuts. Even better... pay for "overnight" shipping means you are paying way more for something that most likely will be overnight... or in 4 days anyway. Welcome to the modern world.

Its not bad if you live near a location that sells parts. And you'd think the modern world would mean cheaper and more accessable. I just dont think the pin world has modernized and changed with the times. Almost anything else you need or want can be found on Amazon, aliexpress etc and cheap.

Issue recently popped up where the game is shutting off randomly. I did have a couple of light mods connected via alligator clips to a give and flasher, thought maybe that was causing it. But still happening even after they are disconnected. There doesn't seem to be anything in particular that causes it. I got through a full game this morning with no issues, came back this afternoon and it shut off mid game twice.

Any ideas? I looked at fuses and there didn't appear to be any blown. I am just not sure how to troubleshoot this issue.

Flakey power switch? What do you do to get it back on?

I think c30 is responsible for resets, double check pinwiki

Thanks John and sulli. The machine just resets. Comes right back on. I'll check c30.

Check your +5v test point on the power supply board. Red probe on the test point and black probe on a ground. What is the reading? Your power supply may be in need of a full rebuild. (Don’t let that scare you, it’s a 15 minute job and only a moderate level of experience is needed)

#5481 2 days ago

Well I was able to drop into playerone and grab a couple eos switches. Whirlwind has not blown the 4amp fuse yest. So maybe just maybe the old eos was the issue??
