I am trying to help a friend troubleshoot his Whirlwind from some 1500 miles away. The game was recently sent out to be shopped and some modding done to it. Upon it returning it had star posts lights installed, pop bumper rings, etc.

One of the pop bumper rings made contact with the ring/rod and shorted. It was either a result of this or something separate, but F2 started blowing and thus the entire lower GI is out. He's gone over all of the sockets and can't find anything loose, bridged, touching, etc.

I thought the fuses on this worked in quadrants so it's a bit confusing to me that all of the lower GI is out with Fuse 2.

Any ideas what else to test for? I didn't think the pop lights and had anything to do with F2 and he states they are now working. It's just everything below them that's not.

They are set up by GI daisy chain. F1 for upper playfield GI, F2 for lower playfield GI, F3 for upper backbox GI, and F4 for lower backbox GI.

Most likely a moving part is periodically touching the lower GI wire chain, such as the lock diverter or one of the kickers.

The lower GI is prone to shorting at the coin door on System 11s due to the GI wire snagging on the handle of the lock bar.

Thank you for this. It is much appreciated. I will relay the information to my friend.
