Some machines seem to be good from a play perspective, but could have been so much better if it weren't for an absolutely unfortunate or terrible theme. These machines can be good values.

For example, Roller Games was a Steve Ritchie title based on a TV show that was canceled before the machine was even released. Talk about taking the wind out of the sails!

WPT and WoF come to mind

Congo and Johnny Mnemonic #1 and #2. Both awesome games but poor theme/movie hurt their popularity.

I still haven't played a Baywatch, but from reading comments and reviews, it is an awesome game with great gameplay, and a bad theme. Too bad it wasn't Jaws instead.

I don't mind the theme, but a lot of people do: LAH. Lots of the movie pins of the 90s had unfortunate themes. Why Shadow, JM, LAH and DM got pins and movies like Braveheart, LA Confidential, Goodfellas, Toy Story, Pulp Fiction and the Matrix did not, who knows.

Personally i hate the Addams Family theme

I think Genesis is a great playing mid 80's Gottlieb game. It's just hideous on the eyes to look at that backglass.

Popeye saves the earth

Special Force

Hey,

I was going to say The Shadow. Brian Eddy does AFM and MM and they're "sell your car and buy me" games, and The Shadow can be found under $3,0000?

Luke

The Shadow is a movie very few are familiar with, but the game is rated highly.
Many would say the same for TRON, but I actually liked those movies.

Popeye Saves the Earth

Wow. It's hard to imagine that someone thought Popeye was a good idea for a theme in 1994.

#16 10 years ago

Hey now, them's fighting words!

edit- I mean, just look at the magic that radiates from the striking visual.

WOF! Such a great layout and such a shitty theme.

Popeye would have been a GREAT theme, if it stuck to the traditional Popeye storyline (Olive Oyl gets kidnapped by Bluto or whatnot, Popeye proceeds to kick A@@), but they went with some stupid Popeye saves the environment idea which really stunk. It kind of reminds me of how Disney makes these straight to DVD sequels of classic animated moves that makes no sense at all.

I think JM is probably the one theme I dislike the most. OK game, but the movie was terrible. (As was Shadow and Congo, but at least in Congo's case the book was good!)

#21 10 years ago

Genesis is a good idea, it's just the backglass that's so awful. The replacement alternate sold online would be the way to go with that.

You want bad, how about "Disco Fever"?

#22 10 years ago

Police Force. Should have been Batman.

#23 10 years ago

Spring Break

#24 10 years ago

Yeah, normally I'm good with a girly theme, but Big Dick is just too much....dick.

WOZ for SURE. JM as well.

I was waiting for who was going to say it first.

Thats what she said.

Hollywood Heat is a fun game, but the Miami Vice based theme suffers from Gottlieb's knock-off era (not that a licensed Miami Vice would have been better)

That is ok, I know people that would say ACDC and Metallica.

Monster Bash, Party Monsters and Tales from the Crypt.

Not a big fan of goofy ass camp.

#31 10 years ago

It's funny, I see why JM doesn't appeal to the masses, but it's the perfect theme for me. 1) I am a memory scientist, and 2) I really like cyberpunk and William Gibson. Sure the movie sucked, but the idea was really cool. I think the pinball machine executes the ideas in Johnny Mnemonic quite well. I will admit, the voice actors take some getting used to. I love the game, but I still cringe a bit every time the Keanu impersonator yells "Jackpot!"

STTNG.......I love the game (layout, rules, etc) but not a fan at all of the theme

I agree. Not a Star Trek fan at all, but I have come around to the overall difficulty of the game. Of course now the game is out of my price range

LOL.... STTNG is like Star Wars' ugly red head step child...but without the Shatner coolness that the original had

Three themes I absolutely love. Different strokes I guess.

When I saw the thread title I thought

"Awe shit, here we go" lol

You know down deep you had a list of suspects who would say WOZ didn't you?

I honestly did not know who or when, but I knew would.

I vote for Tee'd Off. I'd rather watch paint dry than watch golf but amazingly, that game is ridiculously fun to play. The first time I played it I figured I would hate it but it turned out to be really fun. You know the old saying... Never judge a book by it's cover......

#40 10 years ago

WCS, Stryker Extreme, Super Soccer

#41 10 years ago

Sorry wrestling fans, but WWF RR gets my vote. I'd probably still have the game if it wasn't for the theme and annoying call outs.

WPT is a GREAT theme.

Thanks for the credit, but I can't take it.

Family Guy, Dr Who and WoZ are themes bad enough to prevent me buying the game no matter how good.

AC/DC and Metallica

Warlok. Nearly identical play field as a Blackout, but with horrid BG and play field artwork.

Absolutely without a doubt Baywatch, I owned one, love the gameplay, it was top notch. But I just could no longer take the Baywatch theme and had to sell it. I still kind of regret it, but then the super cheesy music and callouts come to mind...yikes!

Seriously though, probably one of the best pure pinball games I've played, other than the multiball. Far to easy to accomplish and even at the most inopportune times, because you had no real control of getting it or not. If you wanted to complete the tower shots, you better do it fast, because you'll be screwed by multiball...

I might buy one again if the price was right, sub 1k with everything working.
