Linked Games

#1 5 years ago

Comparisons are across pins are inevitable. We see some innovation in recent pins, but also some similarities to pins of yesteryear. With limited budgets and space, it's worth weighing the 'fun' a potential pin on the shopping list will bring compared with other pins out there. The opportunity cost of spending ~$12K on a Collectors Edition Pirates is NOT spending money on an Attack from Mars Remake & Walking Dead Pro.

So I thought of a fun little game...

-Post two pins with some sort of interesting common link (whether that be rules, toy, multiplier, artwork, layout etc). It could be something as obvious as the layout of Seawitch vs Beatles, or less obvious like the gun in T2 vs ACDC. There might even be more than one linkage; try to be creative, but don't say what the link is.

-The next poster:
1. Tries to find the commonality.
2. Says which pin did it better.
3. Posts two more pins with a different link for the next poster.

This isn't to say that one pin is better, worth more, or more enjoyable; but simply which pin implemented the similarity better.

I'll go first:

Shadow vs. Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Eager Beaver did drop targets better than Joker Poker.

Shadow: The magnet catch and fling up?

Tron vs. KISS

Tron: spinning disk

Paragon vs frontier

#5 5 years ago

Sorry, I missed the plot and just gave away my answer. Where's that doh emoji?

#6 5 years ago
Quoted from TheLaw:

Tron: spinning disk
Paragon vs frontier

Good one. Inline drop targets blocking the left orbit. I'd say Paragon did it better, with the risk reward of the multiplier, there are 4 instead of 3, and you have two lower right flippers to shoot from.

I'd say Tron wins vs Kiss on the disk.

>Congo vs. Iron Maiden

#7 5 years ago
Quoted from TheLaw:

Paragon vs frontier

OK then. I'm going with Frontier as the inline drops down takes you back to the top of the playfield.

Next- Heat Wave and Magic Clock.

Edit- Too late! I can't win.

Get your drunk ass back to work!

Outlane skillshot, Congo did it better. Even has a combo!

Next: doodle bug or solar fire

It’s because you are drunk today

#11 5 years ago

Sinbad or Big Game? Who did the double flippers better?

#12 5 years ago
Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

It’s because you are drunk today

Sure, but maybe after I eat something my reflexes might improve. They have the best little taco stand in the liquor store next door and I am about to indulge myself.

You can't say what the similarity is, that's the mystery!

(and it's big game, but)

Original JJPOTC spinning disk was better than pizza

AFM and BK2K

Black Knight 2000 has the better callout when pressing a flipper button in attract mode. "Gimme your money!"

Stern Star Wars vs. Nascar?

#19 5 years ago
Quoted from PoMC:

Stern Star Wars vs. Nascar?

Star Wars hyperloop is more fun since you can feed balls into it yourself

Next: Xenon and Black Hole

#20 5 years ago

Xenon has the sexiest pinball sounds ever but I'll give black hole's infinity lighting the nod.

Flash vs Skateball

#21 5 years ago

ACDC vs Dirty Harry cannon/gun shot. DH did it better.

#22 5 years ago

Skateball has a better crossing plunge shot than Flash and an upper left flipper that Flash doesn’t.

Pinbot vs. Jackbot

#23 5 years ago
Quoted from Gnatty:

Skateball has a better crossing plunge shot than Flash and an upper left flipper that Flash doesn’t.
Pinbot vs. Jackbot

Aside from the obvious, both have a visor that opens for you to shoot balls into. Jackpot wins due to the more complex code to open.

Fishtails vs Taxi

#24 5 years ago
Quoted from jonesjb:

Fishtails vs Taxi

Fishtails has the better crossing ramps, could shoot those all day

Elektra vs Haunted House

#25 5 years ago
Quoted from zacaj:

Outlane skillshot, Congo did it better. Even has a combo!
Next: doodle bug or solar fire

Is "would like to have in my collection" an acceptable commonality?

I would say Doodle Bug's auto-fire scoring thing is much more noticeable than that on Solar Fire...though opinion could change with more Solar Fire.

(It looks like there's a 'main' thread going so I'll just tie up loose ends with that.)

#26 5 years ago
Quoted from jonesjb:

Fishtails vs Taxi

Fish Tales has the better crossover ramps, as you shoot the actual crossover, it can make a U-turn, and it's faster!

Big Guns vs. F-14 Tomcat

#27 5 years ago
Quoted from zacaj:

Fishtails has the better crossing ramps, could shoot those all day
Elektra vs Haunted House

Haunted House's 3-layer playfields are iconic. Elektra's, regardless of quality, are not.

Seawitch vs Dragonfist

Quoted from Marty_Graw77:

Fish Tales has the better crossover ramps, as you shoot the actual crossover, it can make a U-turn, and it's faster!
Big Guns vs. F-14 Tomcat

F-14’s central upper flippers have a more complex area with more to shoot for.

I’ll defer to @pinballprincess‘s Seawitch vs. Dragonfist for the next poster.

How about Magnasave?

Black Knight's "catch and hold," or Jungle Lord/Grand Lizard/Solar Fire's "catch and fling?"

I personally like the latter version.

#30 5 years ago
Quoted from pinballprincess: Seawitch vs Dragonfist

Dragon fist: Far right Spinner?
That spinner is nuts on dragon... Just talking aboot lately; it's unanaturally placed... Which somehow makes it great.

Grand lizard

Inline Drops:
Eight Ball Deluxe
Metallica

#32 5 years ago

This one might be a little tricky:

No Fear vs Junkyard.

#33 5 years ago

No Pop Bumpers in either?
I’ll give it to Junkyard as the design is a bit more innovative and doesn’t really allow for pops where as no fear is just a fan layout minus the pops.

Throw out an easy one Stern Startrek and Guardians of the galaxy.

#34 5 years ago

Straight up the center main shot? Stern star trek

Judge dredd vs mustang

#35 5 years ago
Quoted from Mitch:

Center Bank of drops for multiball? Dredd did it better since its in order and has the hole behind it.

Bk2000 and No Fear

#36 5 years ago

Horseshoe shot, No Fear has better flow.

Family Guy and Monopoly

#37 5 years ago
Quoted from Bublehead:

Horseshoe shot, No Fear has better flow.
Family Guy and Monopoly

Both Pat Lawlor designs, and Family Guy is better.

Twilight Zone vs Shadow.

#38 5 years ago

Mini playfield... I would go with TZ and inviso-flippers over Battlefield only because both vex me, yet the inviso flips are just way cooler IMO

Central Park and Cross Town (or Hurdy Gurdy and Subway)

Central Park and Cross Town (or Hurdy Gurdy and Subway)

Two vertical lines of lit inserts that result in a special. Central Park did it better because it had a monkey ringing a bell.

Congo and Dirty Harry. I think this will be a difficult one.

#40 5 years ago

both have diverters on the ramps? Neither have a video mode? (I don't count Congo's path selection as a "video mode")

#41 5 years ago
Quoted from Grandnational007:

Neither have a video mode?

Congo has a video mode. Rafting.

Quoted from jonesjb:

>Congo vs. Iron Maiden

Also late to the party on this, but besides the outlane skill shot, both have a rare ramp shot through pops. I'd say Congo does this better as well as the ramp is more important to the game and circles the volcano.

Edit: In spirit with The Law's edit below, I'm saying the volcano ramp itself is much cooler with all the shots that also feed into it. It's a very cool ramp. The coding in the game though isn't nearly as important as left ramp on IMDN.

Quoted from Grandnational007:

WEll it can be argued, but how do you feel aboot the other video modes?

Quoted from Yoko2una:

I'd say Congo does this better as well as the ramp is more important to the game and circles the volcano.

Hmm...I'd disagree there....Congo valcano ramp can be completely ignored.
EDIT: I agree it's cooler though

Nope. Something else and something very cool. This feature also exists in Who Dunnit (that’s a hint).

I was gonna go with 2 saucers but W?D doesn't have any..hmmm.

both have midnight madness?

I forgot about the rafting! Gah!

Isn't it the jackpot during multiball?

Quoted from jonesjb:

Congo and Dirty Harry. I think this will be a difficult one.

Midnight Madness? Congo wins because I lost a game of Dirty harry in a tournament due to it.

Speakeasy or Defender?

#47 5 years ago
Quoted from Grandnational007:

both have midnight madness

Bingo!

#48 5 years ago
Quoted from zacaj:Isn't it the jackpot during multiball?

It a normal jackpot like the easy ramp. It should be a super which is it's problem.

#49 5 years ago

Consider this post separate from the game.

Quoted from jonesjb:

F-14’s central upper flippers have a more complex area with more to shoot for.

I'd actually argue in favor of Big Guns here. While I think I probably prefer F-14 overall, Big Guns definitely has more going on in the upper playfield. Behind the drops there's a spot and a loop shot. If you can get the top drop down in each bank, it's possible to make combo shots quickly looping behind each bank of drops which raises the multiplier and just feels super satisfying.
