After having classic rock bands like AC/DC and Rolling Stones as pins, I think it's time to go out of the box a little bit. Yes, I know GNR was an 80's band, but let's keep it to alternative rock from at least 25 years ago.

imo none of the bands mentioned have a broad enough appeal to sell a pin.

What if I put in U2 and the Police?
Nevermind, can't edit the poll.

What a great poll! I do have a tough time deciding between The Smiths and Depeche Mode. Ultimately, I'd have to go with DM. I can already think of some fun shots.... Master and Servant ball capture, Enjoy the silence (mute the music). How about Just can't get Enough for Multiball? Or 'Lie to Me', where target values get halved The back loop shot could be Route 66/Behind the Wheel, or the 101 tour......

The little hamster cage in my brain is really turning now!

Gotta be the Smiths, I am a Morrissey fan and I have given some thought to a custom Moz pin with Southpaw Flipper and "I know its over" on the right outlane.

'The Pixies' ARE our 'U2' kwiKi!
I doubt highly that any of these bands (minus 'Metallica') could ever become a possibility.
You have 'New Order'- but no 'Joy Division'?!?
As for 'The Smiths',
The only thing that would get Morrissey to sign on for this would be to make the backglass a Mirror- so that Moz could just stare at himself the entire time! In fact, just make the WHOLE thing a mirror! They don't call him a "Professional Bastard" for nothing...
The first three or four albums of 'The Cure' would be alright, if they did a 'Cult Hero' multiball, I would be really impressed!
Echo is the poor man's Cure IMHO...
'R.E.M.' is well, 'R.E.M.'...
'DM' has the strongest following worldwide (Again, minus 'Metallica'...), but my vote goes to 'The Pixies' every time!!!
One of my favorite bands... Period!

Crazy, you're not too far from me. Big Moz/Smiths fan as well. I moved here about two days before his show in November and I just couldn't make it. Let me know if you ever head down to the bay area. For SDTM drains 'Heaven knows I'm Miserable now'? How about a Salford Lads Club upper playfield? Manchester so much to answer for Multiball? Draize Train at launch? Still Ill for left outlane? Optional flower holder topper? Two Ball multi mode with his Siouxsie duet playing? 6 ball multiball for end of show stage rush?

Throw in some good Oscar Wilde and PETA references along with some random inflamatory comments. Although I completely agree that Do they know it's Christmas is tuneless

+1

A Metallica pin would really not be do-able. Those guys would probably want 80% of all revenue made on it.

Hahaha...
Or a cow topper that constantly moo's with "Meat is Murder", spray-painted red on it's side.

3 years, 1 month ago

Motley Crue. For sure.
Like AC/DC and GnR, theyre custom designed for pinball.

3 years, 1 month ago

Pixies are obviously the best of the bunch in that poll, but eh to any of them for a game.

3 years, 1 month ago

I had to go for The Cure simply because Rob Smith was my idol when I was a nipper... although I doubt it would make a good pin...

NimblePin said:

I'd choose Joy Division over New Order any day!

3 years, 1 month ago

I'm just not into any of those at all. My calling is the metal.

Now, had you thrown Iron Maiden on there, that's a whole different story.

-Hans

3 years, 1 month ago

Well duh!
'Iron Maiden' WOULD be the best choice if it were on there!!!
I would have mixed emotions if Stern got a hold of this one though.
If done the way 'AC/DC' is currently, I'm afraid I would have to get Benjamin Breeg to sit in on the brainstorming session with his pickaxe for that machine's design...

I agree. Though what a about a Nine Inch Nails one? Seems like it could be a good dark themed pin. Maybe it could be called The Pretty Hate Machine and play songs from the album! Head Like a Hole, anyone? Oh yeah! Then when the ball dumps maybe it could play a clip from Down In It.

3 years, 1 month ago

I wish they would stop rock band themes 80s would definately suck... But and IRON MAIDEN would be awsome.

3 years, 1 month ago

PInk Floyd. Don't think stern could possibly screw that one up. I know not the 80's.

3 years, 1 month ago

Pink floyd.

I think jj had a good idea w woz, but should've incorporated some Floyd dark side songs to complement the game.

3 years, 1 month ago

I like most of those bands but the music just doesn't lend itself to a pinball...my vote would be for the only band that matters...The Clash

3 years, 1 month ago

Are we not men? We are Devo! D E V O

3 years, 1 month ago

If DEVO or Weird Al were on the list, I would have chosen them, but insted I took the very unpopular Depeche Mode choice.

I thought they were at their peak in the 80's and their music had a lot of power. Does that mean I want their ugly British faces on the playfield? NO WAY.

If we're going for 80's industrial with a nine inch nails machine, I want to go a little deeper and have a Skinny Puppy machine. It can be a gory horror movie theme that plays only the gory-ist parts of the movies on the DMD (if anyone here has ever seen the Worlock video).

Had to cast my vote for New Order as my fiancee is a pinhead and that's her favorite band. As for me, I'm with AbacusMan....

"Don't taze me, bro!"

I didn't even think about DEVO! Energy dome pop bumper caps!

Moz fans are so rabid, if I built this thing, it would actually sell.
Still convinced that Morrissey is the greatest singer of the twentieth century, if you don't count Jeff Buckley.

The man, the legend, then and now. Not well known in America except among fans and those in the know when it comes to New Romantic British music. Very heartfelt singer, one of the best ever I think. I think its really cool that at least two of my fellow Pinsiders here know exactly what I'm talking about. A cult following if there ever was one. Moz is cruel to his fans, thats part of it, too.

Good lord, this is like a list of the worst bands ever. If those were my arcade pinball choices back in the day, I might just be a video game collector. LOL. Music is definitely one of those themes that can be really polarizing.

- Craig

P.S. - bring on Iron Maiden! (now you can throw rocks at my musical taste!)

I know who Morrissey is. (a legend? definitely in his own mind!) I was asking about Jeff Buckley, apparently a singer who died young and never heard anything by hi. Saw that there were many tributes/covers of his music done, also by musicians I've never heard of.

They had a pinball game on Sega Genesis. I played the shit out of it as a kid, as they were my favorite band at the time. Still fun to play, even though the physics are hilariously terrible.

R.E.M. would never sell out like that. They are/were not into the whole commercialism of rock that U2 loves so much. I like U2 so don't slam me for saying that.
U2 is definitely the best choice for a pinball music theme other than the Beatles. The Beatles would sell more pins than any other theme in pinball, except possibly Harry Potter.

lady gaga pin would outsell anything

I understand many people want other bands to be put on the list, but I can't edit the poll. Maybe in Pinside's future, that'll change.

KMFDM with Brute! art.

NIN would be sweet too.. or SP, or FLA.

Realistically though, a Depeche Mode pin would be sweet.

Buckley, poor kid drowned in the Mississippi river while singing 'Whole Lotta Love',at age 30, never got to live to see his full potential..He did Morrissey better than Moz himself when he eerily sang:

"The sea wants to take me....oh mother I can feel the soil falling over my head"

Since this is fantasy land, I say a DEVO pin would be epic. But early solid state style... nothing too complicated with ramps and DMD animations.

3 years, 1 month ago

Smiths
then Echo and the Bunnymen
I go to a few retro 80s-90s new wave events a month
and you hear these bands all the time.

3 years, 1 month ago

You left off......
Misfits
Melvins or
Ramones

Of course a Tool pin would be a treat to the eyes and ears

My vote is for REM...but only if they present enough of their music and do it properly in the game. In other words, 3-5 second clips would turn me off. Longer than that I am interested and hopefully some background music or multi ball music lasts way longer than that too!

3 years, 1 month ago

Depeche Mode - I would buy if it had hits from 80s,90,00,10s!
New Order - I would buy if it had hits from 80s,90 & 00s

I want to do a Pop Will Eat Itself machine.

Faith No More is an excellent band for a theme too.

KMFDM SUCKS! KMFDM 90s-early 00s music with BRUTE! art, excellent.

NIN would be rad minus current stuff.
