I understand that using LEDs is a subjective art form. when it comes to inserts, the general rules seem to be adjusting the intensity of the light and color/hue. But for the GI, there seems to be alot more latitude.

Personally I like to see the artwork on the PF, so I tend to use warm or cool white LEDs for the GI, depending on whether the PF is colored "Warmer" or "Cooler"moverall. The one thing that Ive constantly struggled with in LEDs however is light dispersement.

What LEDs are people using to disperse the most light across the PF, without blinding your eye sockets in the process?

In my ToM I'm switching from cointaker ultra cool whites to purple.
The whites were good but the purple really gives the color scheme a different feel.
It's a little dark so going to add some spotlights or some white LED strips behind the flippers.
For my JD I'm planning on blue GI. Cool white looks good, but again, the colored LED's take it to another level.

I love Pinballbulbs.com warm white retro's for most any GI application.

Can I ask a noob question? Whats the difference between the CTs and the Pinballbulbs? Is the dispersion equal and its just a matter of hue? or is the light dispersion different for each?

Price mostly. Pbb is lower cost.

Persnally i like purples, pinks and cool whites in GI. All depends on plastic colors.

    Blues/purples/teal/some greens can be purples

    Oranges/browns/pinks can be pink bulbs

Cool whites for others. All takes experimentation and your personal preference. Pink is defnitely the secret weapon of colors

Frosted whites in the playfield GI and stock 555's in the back glass. The playfield has been converted to 44/47 bulbs. As soon as I convert the back glass to 44/47 bulbs, it will be done in a variety of LED's.

Pbb retros are convertable to supers also. The top pops off.

It depends on the brightness level you want,

The baseline is a single frosted 5050 SMD, Warm or Natural....depending on the game and taste. This is available from most all Vendors.

Brighter is with a clear lens, and while it can hurt your eyes in line of sight, exposed LEDs are now used in Star Trek, and it is accepted.....but it is not for everyone.

    There are 2-LED encapsulated
    and 3 LED encapsulated

I use 2 SMD faceted, when I want a Star throw of light. On some thin screened or light colored plastics, I diffuse the top with a quick sanding.

Next, I have seen some nice games done with 4 SMD...they can be harsh, but they looked nice on a recent demoman at a show.

For the brightest GI, you can use the bulb now in Star Trek, a 4+1 SMD Tower, a Quasar, or an Op-Max....
All these are for increased brightness.

Of course there are Great GI enhancement Kits in the form of Spots, and LED Strips....

and Then....Hergs GI OCD Board, if you have sensitive eyes, or want the best control.
