Quoted from Spitfiren8:Id be in for a Dr Who set
I've already been hit with a copyright notice from PPS for Dr. Who. Apparently they already sell that set, yet it's not displayed on their site.....go figure. Hard to sell something you don't advertise. I don't mind however doing the 6 missing targets but I would need at least 10 backers and would have to combine them with another set that I would do.

No doubt due to your thread title and the fact they they still peruse these boards constantly for just such a thing.
To an extent, I can't blame them. If I had paid all that money to obtain all the B/W rights, I'd be policing just about everything as well.
Still kinda sucks though.
Wish there was someway the Pinball community could buy the Williams copyrights from PPS. Like a go fund me. Then we could all reap the benefits of not having to deal with these issues anymore

Just playing devil's advocate here again….
The problem with that is quality control. I'm a graphic artist by trade and I have done some repro work for my games and the amount of time I spent getting things exactly dead on would probably surprise most people. I have seen some others' repro artwork that's available online to download and some people's work that you can buy as replacements for side art or whatever and let me tell you….they….are…horrible! Everything from Rudy's face being incorrectly shaded to the red bloom on TZ's side art looking more like a supernova than a sunset, all being sold under the guise that they're correct and factory replacements. Truly, there's a lot more out there that's piss poor quality, but those are two examples that I've seen that are still being made and sold to this day.
I feel bad for the people buying this crap, too. Most don't know any better, either. They assume the seller is selling them a genuine product, as that's how they advertise it. Meanwhile, they never got the ok from the copyright holder, i.e. the person or people that ensure that whatever has their name on it is correct and true to the original. They want uniformity just as much as we want to be sure what we're putting on our machines is factory correct.
If the copyright were owned by an unidentifiable people group, heretofore public domain, all bets would truly be off and it would a mess trying to figure out which company has the most correct "thing" of any replacement part or artwork. That's kind of the way it is right now with arcade marquees, bezels, and CPOs. Lots of companies selling stuff that is way different than the next guy. Without having an original in your own possession, how are you to know what you're buying is right? It's also the very same reason Ford got into the "licensed product" game so many years ago. Sure, they saw it as a way to make some extra money, but it was also largely because there were so many repro part companies out there that made parts for just about every kind of Ford imaginable that were making absolute crap with Ford's name and part numbers on it. Once Ford stepped in and put a stop to most of it, quality and fit went way up across the board. Sure, there's still junk being made, but not under Ford licensing.
When PPS bought the copyrights, they also bought all the B/W property that Gene had. Included in that were original printing screens and plates from the B/W factory for tons of pieces including playfields and sideart. They can either use those exact same pieces to reproduce parts from, or they can scan them and digitize them, allowing them to print directly on to whatever better substrate they want, resulting in a better product overall. Sure, PPS will have some errors along the way, typically related to printers who say one thing and deliver another, but as long as they have the yardstick to measure by, and are diligent in their quality standards, what they produce or approve for production by other companies should be pretty damn good stuff.
I'm not really a PPS fanboy, honestly, but I will defend a copyright owner as long as they are trying to make sure what people are producing is accurate and true to the original stuff. One thing I wish they could do is speed up the approval process. Oh, and also loosen their grip on a couple titles so some much needed replacement parts could finally be made. I personally know of one where the artwork and the CAD is all done and ready to go on a part a lot of us need, we're still just waiting on the approval from PPS.

For years I've wanted to get the ball rolling on Alvin G shop out decal sets as well as the various coin door and apron decals. If I get a chance to dig out NOS examples of everything I'll be in contact if you'd be interested in doing these....

You have been around 4 years and never seen the "sanctioned" garbage that Classic Arcades puts out? There is a reason PPS is no longer a Pinside member!

I'll take a set of these. Now we only need 8 more....

Sure thing

I know, I just didn't want to name names.
Some of the companies that were making things before PPS got the B/W copyright still had stock they were trying to get rid of before jumping ship on production with PPS reclaiming all that stuff. Sadly, one of the casualties was Phoenix Arcade. Their sideart quality and accuracy was legendary! (Except for that one run of TZ that they made a bit off, but fixed afterwards.)
Quoted from o-din:I could use a drop target decal for my Williams Heat Wave.
I am as well.
