Working on a Shadow. Still has batteries on the secondary board on CPU. Should I replace it with a Franks' coin board or just replace it with a NVRAM. Dont think this game needs a clock. Both are close in price.

If RAM is already in a socket, go with NVRAM.
If not, and the battery holder is in good shape, just stick in lithium AA.
Less is more, sometimes.
Which ever is correctly spelled…
Sorry OP, couldn’t resist. I know I’m an ass.
In all seriousness, life happens. Shit happens. NVRAM and it won’t happen.
Depends on your level of comfort with soldering. If you're not great and there's no existing socket then the coin replacement is an easier fix.
I doubt there is a socket on on there. Will need to desolder the old ram, then solder in a socket to do the NVRAM. Still the way i would go but you need to be careful with dem delicate traces. AAA’s are not the enemy if you change them annually.
I've always been a fan of Frank's boards. Simple, easy, no wires hanging about, and only takes a few minutes.

It's way too easy to forget about them. It's better to eliminate the risk entirely.

So just use lithium AA's.
I have nvram on many machines, but I only install when having other board work done. No reason to do it all on its own.

It's still too easy to replace those with alkalines instead.
Think about the NVRAM like a blanket liability policy…you ask yourself “do I really need it? I’m not sure, but it’s so cheap, why not?” And poof, you’ll probably never think of it again. You’ll never know it’s there. The only time I think about mine is when I see the ACH line on a bank statement. You’ll never think about that NVRAM again until you go to sell your machine, then you’ll list it in the ad for work you've done. Only 3 times you think about the batteries in a WPC-when it comes up “Factory Settings Restored”, when you move it and you notice the battery holder above the left head bolt and think “I should change those” and then forget to change them, and finally the dreaded “Well fuck me, my CPU is dead because I forgot to change those batteries!” And BTW, alkalines can leak with no warning signs. They don’t have to sit dormant or go dead to leak…
