I live in the Bay Area which sucks. I hate it here. Here for the kids and job.

Goal is to move to our vacation home eventually. It is in California but is relatively inexpensive, homes can be had for 300k, no traffic and on a lake. Get all the joys of California (weather, scenery, etc) without the insane prices.

I have tried to find some place better (visit a different state every year) but nothing compares for our life style.

Only 14 more years to go!!

Quoted from PtownPin:

Other than the cost of housing its relatively cheap to live in the Bay Area....that being said a shit box by my kids school just sold for $1.4M....it was 1900 sq ft, built in the 70's, needed work, and on a busy street...its ridiculous ..

I do believe California has good qualities. Where I want to eventually live is more conservative than anywhere I went in Texas or Tennessee plus no humidity. You can find one stop light towns in California, you just have to look.

Sure some things are still more expensive (gas) but the trade off of scenery, weather are are worth the added costs for me and I have built that in to my retirement. If I find somewhere better I may jump ship but I don’t see it happening.

This place is for me truly heaven!

Quoted from usandthem:The only thing I've seen on this entire thread is unfettered conservative propaganda.

Maybe your state is different but you should visit California and maybe you would feel differently.

Quoted from TronGuy:

what town is this?

Copperopolis, lake Tulloch

My family has property on Maui. Is is an amazing place to visit. I would have no interest to live there. Cool for at the most two weeks at a time and then get me off that island.

Since this thread is a little off track and if money is no object really the ideal situation for me would be to have a home base (Copperopolis), property in Hawaii and then maybe one other time share maybe in Colorado/Montana and just roll between the three of them depending on weather and time of the year.

I guess that would be my dream scenario and actually may be able to accomplish it in retirement but for now stuck in the bay.

Quoted from jeffro01:

It's amazing, but not surprising, all of the different things people value which are different from person to person as it pertains to where people want to live or think they want to live. I'm a liberal, although not on everything but that's irrelevant here, and I love living in CA and really love living in the Bay Area. Is it perfect? No. But despite my success I'm not quite successful enough to find "perfection". I doubt really anyone here is with the possible exception or two. Politics in general over the last 20 years or so has really muddied the waters and turned people against each other. I won't put forth my own opinions here but I'd be they'd offend more than a few if I did. That doesn't make anyone a bad person but it does go to show just how polarized we've become. Local politics factors significantly into what's important for me and my wife so far as where we want to live. It's one of the main reasons why we left the midwest and moved to CA in the first place.
At the end of the day, all of us try to strike a balance between what we want and what we can afford or what our life circumstances allow us to make work. There are a number of places I think I'd like to live but they all include drawbacks just like where I live now.
Jeff

I just want people to stay out of my shit. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. It is probably way too over simplified but that is why I love Copperopolis so much. I don't need a law telling me everything I should and shouldn't do some of that should be straight common sense.

Quoted from javagrind888:

In Texas you can't beat the cost of living combined with the food and things to do, but (god's name in vain in every damned manner) THIS HEAT! It's been high 99-100 for over two months. I can't stand it and I was born and raised here.

Trying to escape California we visited Texas. It wasn't for me. Atleast where we went wasn't, I understand it is a huge state, but the heat didn't kill me but the humidity sure did. We came back to California and it was 103 degrees and my wife and I commented on how it was the coolest 103 degrees we had ever felt after being in Texas. I guess I am a wussy, I just can't handle that!

Quoted from pinmister:

Yea the collection would probably have to go. I would not want to have to pack much and would probably look for a small apartment for rent. Get a part time job to keep the sanity and get to know the local people and surroundings. Not sure about a year in each location, but maybe at least six months. Sometimes we get too comfortable in our surroundings and avoid/fear change. Right now it is just a thought but who knows-maybe someday? One can only dream.

As stated my goal is to have home base and travel. May not go as extreme as your thinking but down for a couple months at a time. That is the goal once the kids are raised. Life always can throw curve balls but I am playing percentages and am putting myself in a financial position to do so.

Quoted from Methos:

I've never been to the Bay area, but those that I know that liked it. Why are you concerned that your kids won't experience the same there anymore?

Cost of living!!! You better make 300k+++ and have some help to be able to buy a house and it is just getting worse.

My house is probably 1.5 and we were looking to upgrade. 2 million for fixer uppers.

Just straight nasty!

Don’t know how kids out of college or young families can ever afford that without major help!

Quoted from IdahoRealtor:

Still plenty of houses in the East Bay for $600k-$800k. Condos <$500k. Depends on the city. Still not cheap. SF, Silicon Valley, fuggetaboudit!

I am saying the odds of my children have the same/better life in the bay without significant financial help would be nearly impossible. It would be very difficult to do better than the previous generation which I believe is the hope for most parents for their children.

Quoted from robertmee:

1600 sq ft homes in my area are starter homes...I just cant wrap my head around a home like this costing 500k to 1M in California. Are the wages for the average middle class that much higher? For a family of four, where a mom is a school teacher and the dad is the manager of the local McDonalds, how are they affording housing? Honest question and no detriment aimed toward CA.

As someone mentioned earlier multiple generations in one home.

Still the housing problem is very real. On my street at work there are now multiple motor homes parked and workers are living in the motor homes on street in front of their work.

Quoted from robertmee:

I'm amazed that the 1M home pictured is in your mind reasonable. As someone else mentioned, that's a 300k house in my area. We're in the RTP area which is dubbed silicon east so plenty of tech jobs that are making the aforementioned 150k a year. But School teachers, government workers, police officers, small business owners, retail managers, etc can still afford these types of homes. I dont understand how the regular middle class of people in service industries in California have any opportunity at home ownership. Seems like a huge bubble that has to burst at some point. All those tech people arent going to teach their own kids or cook their own food.

Multi generational homes is how many are doing it now. I though the bubble would burst too but so many people are willing to commute and do it, I don't know if it will. I know even if my kids are very successful they will not have a shot at home ownership without a lot of help if they want to stay in the bay. I am basically planning on giving them my house in the future. As my goal is to get the hell out of here!!
