I live in the Bay Area which sucks. I hate it here. Here for the kids and job.
Goal is to move to our vacation home eventually. It is in California but is relatively inexpensive, homes can be had for 300k, no traffic and on a lake. Get all the joys of California (weather, scenery, etc) without the insane prices.
I have tried to find some place better (visit a different state every year) but nothing compares for our life style.
Only 14 more years to go!!

Pro's
1) Pinball scene is pretty good.

Con's
1) People here are pure garbage. This stands for all of New England. They will steal, lie, just try and fuck you over and your family. Not every person here but most. Striking up a conversation here is pretty much impossible as people mainly hang out with their family, play with their dog, watch tv, work. It's VERY cliquey. I will give you a tip actually about the competitive pinball scene here. If you are not good at pinball or not show up to a lot to events, people will not talk to you because you are not good or "commited". Not all of them are like this but some of the real hardcore people are and you know some of them already.
2) The taxes are insanely bad here. NH has a no seat belt law or income tax so they don't have federal funding for their roads. They have to pay for it somehow so property values rival NJ. ME has $5+ toll roads every mile.
3) Crime is REALLY bad here.
4) I cannot underestimate this enough but the amount of racism here is truly insane and this goes for all of New England. You will find a few African Americans in Boston and that is it. No Asians in VT, ME, NH or RI just Boston.
5) The winters and really the weather controls your life. Often Winter will start mid October and end around mid-late May. Summer is usually super hot and humid. Usually a tornado will touch down in western MA and insurance companies get away with not covering it because the weatherman called it a "Supercell". Northern parts of NH, ME, VT have mudslides. We have nor'easters which is essentially a snowstorm and hurricane. Sometimes we have snowstorms with thunder and lightning called "thunder snow" in fact.
6) Back to the people/sports thing. We are super proud of our sports teams but our fans are terrible. Not the worst but pretty bad.
7) Our fashion here sucks. All we wear is sport team shirts, flannel, and bargain clothing from Bob Stores.
8 ) Drug use here is pretty hardcore and prevalent (depressed from the people, high taxes, and weather). Parents will hook their children onto pot at a very young age often and smoke with them well into adulthood. They will supply the alcohol. Often this leads to harder drugs like cocaine. Donald Trump said that NH is a "drug infested den" and it's very much true. Manchester, NH is SO BAD with drugs. Recently MA legalized pot and now you will be driving or walking in the city of Boston and just smell the shit. It doesn't smell like cologne or perfume! No it smells like Jesse Pinkman shit hole house! The ME residents are just constantly on pot. We constantly have to tell them to smoke their shit outside in their car and they will often just get baked on the lawn in between rounds.
9) A lot of Democrats here but it feels like they are the minority. TONS of Trumpers in NH like TONS. Really all of New England but NH loves him.
10) History here is great but you can't mess with it. It's Paul Revere house and it ain't moving! Not much space so what you are left with is struggling to work around the history rather than building.
11) VT, RI, CT people don't venture out of their state. ME not often either but sometimes they do. This causes issues with the NEPL finals and trying to prod them with a stick so they leave their house.
Next year I am planning on moving to TX. I went to my first TPF this year and I didn't see any Trumpers, incredibly easy to talk to people, the food OMG, the weather, stuff to do. I wanna work for Lockheed Martin. I'm only 32 and single. Where in TX should I go? I heard Austin is where all the hippies go and east Texas is where all the rednecks are.
If i was 32 and single. Id move to Scottsdale, AZ. I lived there for 3 years before moving back to CA. Best time of my young adult life! The women there are epic, model like status.
Scottsdale, AZ is the best place to be if your single. And the whole area has a great job market. I miss it.

It can be done for sure! A friend who runs websites just like mine (he's my main competitor) leans right and I lean left yet we are good friends, hang out, get drinks, etc. We'll mock each others side sometimes but it's all in good fun. Unfortunately that's not always the case though and some people will just not let others be if their views aren't The Correct View (tm), something that most definitely happens on both sides. The powers that be have indeed successfully got us all fighting against each other so they can all profit of us with their websites, book tours, donations, etc. It's really weird because Canada is not at all like that. For the most part it's two parties there as well yet people don't get so polarized based on their political party. It's a bit of a different world down here in the USA when it comes to that, with some folk anyways.

Okay so now on to my serious question, what lake? We've been looking at property around Clear Lake as a second/vacation/retirement home/place... Would love suggestions on other places to look.

That's where I'm from and where I'm going back to when I'm done working. My old neighborhood down there is a gated community with a semi-private golf course and you can still get a few golf course frontage lots for about $5000/acre. There's a 3 acre lot bordering the 18th fairway I'm looking at for about $25k.

Other than the cost of housing its relatively cheap to live in the Bay Area....that being said a shit box by my kids school just sold for $1.4M....it was 1900 sq ft, built in the 70's, needed work, and on a busy street...its ridiculous ..

I dont know about that. High sales tax. High state income tax. High fuel costs. High utility cost. Day care and private school outrageous. Wages for contractors and all types of service people are high. Permit fees and trafic fines outrageous. Insurance costs high. Vehicle registration is a small fortune; $600 for my Silverado this year. Seems to me we get bent over on just about everything.
utility costs, and property taxes are low here....private school is expensive anywhere u live....not sure about the other stuff, but yes I agree were taxed to death in this state....blame the left wing liberals .... gas is the worst by the way...we pay almost a $1 more a gallon than Idaho/Utah....for what?

There are lots of great cities to live in but the biggest problem is the influx in population growth and the lack of infrastructure that can support such growth. Living in Denver I have seen this city change more in the last five years than the last thirty years. Many cities are experiencing the same level of explosive population growth. Some cities have the infrastructure to handle the population growth and some do not. Our highways are no where near the level they need to be for the amount of cars on our roads, and they are getting worse everyday. Colorado feels like it is quickly becoming the next California. Lots of great places to live, but unfortunately population growth ruins a lot of those places as they become burdensome and not enjoyable. I always have had the thought of having another home in a smaller town just to escape the madness, a town with a population of 250,000 or less. A town with good amenities like a decent hospital, theatres, and restaurants. Been looking in Palm Springs recently for a winter getaway and there are some deals on some really nice Condos there, maybe all the baby-boomers are selling off? Look at Realtor.com for different towns/cities you may be interested in checking out.

I do believe California has good qualities. Where I want to eventually live is more conservative than anywhere I went in Texas or Tennessee plus no humidity. You can find one stop light towns in California, you just have to look.
Sure some things are still more expensive (gas) but the trade off of scenery, weather are are worth the added costs for me and I have built that in to my retirement. If I find somewhere better I may jump ship but I don’t see it happening.

One guy I know, the whole family all packed up together and went to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Parents, siblings, etc, they each bought their own houses but all right near each other. They love it I hear.

I've lived in the Bay Area my entire life, and for all its problems i.e. taxes, crowds, traffic, liberals, etc....the Pros still far outweigh the cons for me although I've been blessed to live a nice area with great schools, jobs, etc....what many people don't realize is the cost of housing is directly related to quality of schools, and jobs.....the other driver is its very difficult to obtain approvals for housing in the Bay Area...activists, and City governments (entitlement programs) fees paid to build a house are off the charts. Its not uncommon that a developer has to pay $250K+ per lot just to get approvals (this is before starting to develop infrastructure and build). So as much as they complain they are their own worst enemies. I'd love to move to Idaho, Utah, Colorado but all those places come with their own set of challenges.

I see a lot of people saying that they love a particular place (except for the liberals) or except for the diversity and all sorts of nonsense like that. The desirability of a location is the sum of many factors. Did you ever stop to think that much of the success of the Bay Area and the fact that a 1000 sq. ft. home costs more than a million bucks is largely because of those awful liberals and their terrible tech companies that pay a median salary of 250K a year? You know those liberals who value education, parks and rec services, a clean environment (well, the best that you can make it with so many people packed into such a small area)? Be careful what you wish for. If the Bay Area were more conservative, it might look more Mississippi instead.
Pittsburgh is a decent option. The pinball community there is growing, and they also have Pinburgh every year!

Pinside’s userbase leans conservative and probably has higher than average income given it’s an expensive hobby, so maybe that’s throwing you off. But your stereotype doesn’t match up with reality anymore.
I would guess polling would bear you out on some of these issues (education) but not on others (diversity, the environment). Unless you meant that some individual conservatives care deeply about all of these issues even if conservatives as a whole rank them below other issues, in which case fair enough.
we all care deeply about the environment, and to say we don't is ignorant......I live possibly the most liberal area in the world, and trust me most of the radical liberals love to paint conservatives with a broad brush...we don't care about the environment, poor people, education, etc...its total BS
Ok, last post here because yeah the constant liberal bashing is beyond tiresome. I get it, liberals have ruined everything in the country and they are horrible, cool got it. Man and you wonder why ladies rarely post on Pinside, good lord, y'all make me uncomfortable to be here I can't imagine how they feel. Now to make one more post then run from the hate:

So this is not all directed at you, but I'll speak generally. What we did is leverage the one thing California has more of that just about any other state, sunshine. Eight years ago we got solar panels for a total cost of $0. Yup, free and they do all maintenance and repair on them free for the life of the panels. Panel breaks? They fix it free. Someone throws axes and smashes all our panels? They fix it free. They simply took our monthly average power bill over the course of a year and installed us a solar panel setup free of charge for less than what our average bill was. Net result? $0 down, instant savings from day one, and for the next 20 years after the install (12 years left) we pay that same flat monthly rate. California has long been ahead of the game on solar power and holy cow have we benefited from it. Our utility bills are nothing, I work from home and run the air conditioner all day without worry because the solar panels fuel it. Every year that goes buy that flat monthly fee we setup eight years ago looks better and better while everyone else just pays more and more. Power prices go up? Great! That means more money to us for excess power our solar panels make because the power company buys it from us (we're a registered power station). We're one of the *best* states to take advantage of this both because of the endless sunshine and because of policies here that made getting solar power simple. Other states fight stuff like this, we embraced it, now my utility bills now cheaper than anywhere else, utility bill problem solved thanks to California.
Fuel? Well turns out we have a local car company that sources local talent, sources local resources, pays local taxes, local local local called Tesla. So I got a Model 3 and let me tell you once you drive one you realize why everyone is trying kill that American company. For one it's because it's a ~$36k car is stupid cheap to operate. Fuel? Don't care, that same California sun I leveraged above also fuels my car. No fuel, no maintenance, no brake changes, no fluid changes, nothing. Being in California means a billion places to charge it although 99% of the time you just let the sun charge it at home. End result? Fuel and vehicle costs are nothing. The reason that company even happened is again because California embraced it while other states fight it, heck I think you can only legally buy them in 17 so states, utter madness. So fuel and vehicle costs are solved thanks to California.
I say all this because people seem to thing we're all millionaires. Instead we leveraged what this state in many cases uniquely offers and/or has things setup to where it's just so cheap to do them here because of state policies. No we're not rich, but thanks to the state we personally pay little for utility and cars. And that's just the top of the iceberg, I could go on and on on all kinds of other stuff where we have the advantage. Again this is not all directed at the person I replied to, it's more generally speaking. Don't believe internet vitriol, do the research and see what's what for yourself.
Ok now you can resume your liberal bashing, don't worry this liberal won't post here anymore. I'm gonna go read about Elvira 3.
