have dot out on my ac/dc premium dmd display. talked to chaz at kickers and he said i can replace 8x8 block on display board and part number is 112-0074-00. i cant seem to locate this part. anyone know where to find it?

#2 9 years ago

That looks, Like a Stern Part Number.. Call your local Stern Distro. Otherwise Shipping Might be to high. I'm sure we could order it for you, but once again shipping to you would be killer

#3 9 years ago

ok thanks. ill try playdium in toronto. out of curiosity how much would you charge to ship to n5w3p2? London ontario canada?

#4 9 years ago

Try eBay

Not saying that below link is the correct one but would not be surprised of ot would work

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281294333581

At least you have now something to compare original part price with

I think I read somewhere previously where someone replaced just one block and ended up with a slightly different contrast in color of the LED's so try and double/triple check with whoever you purchase from that these will be the same exact color e.t.c. otherwise you'll have one funky mis-matched color block in your display....

I ordered 10 blocks online to try.. but then I realized I don't have any junk displays to test

ok that is a good call thanks. im getting 2 blocks right from stern so hopefully they will be the same color. stern gave me the part number too so they better be

Out of curiosity does anyone know if these are common anode or cathode? What about the exact dimensions of the housing?

Ebay units I purchased were not even close. I would order the Stern part.

#12 9 years ago

stern is sending 2 blocks to playdium in toronto. then i will have to pay to have paydium ship them to me in london. was supposed to be in last week and no call so i will call them today.

They probably work, but I wouldn't count on the color to be the same. They need to be common anode 8 X 8 1.8mm modules according to Schwaggs previous post. I see a lot of 1.9mm for sale on ebay but very few 1.8mm. What are the actual dimensions of the housing?

These are 1.9mm and there are a whole bunch of these on ebay:
ebay.com link: 60 pcs Dot Matrix LED Display 1 9 mm 8x8 Red Common Anode 20x20mm 16pin

These are 1.8mm and are the ONLY ones I could find on ebay (after only a couple searches admittedly):
ebay.com link: 2x 8x8 LED dot matrix module 1 8mm CA red common anode

Guys, I made a typo in that post (I just corrected it). They are indeed the common 1.9 mm arrays (I just checked my ebay purchase history). Sorry for the confusion!

These are the ones I bought that DO NOT match the color of the Stern modules. ebay.com link: 8 pcs Dot Matrix LED Display 1 9 mm 8x8 Red Common Anode 20x20mm 16pin

Thanks for clearing that one up Schwaggs

I suppose if you like pain you could replace ALL of the LED modules so they would match.

Cool thanks for posting the update and congratulations for the fix. I am trying to get a block to fix my ACDC.

#19 9 years ago

no prob. stern wont ship to the public i guess so have to ship to your local distributor and then pick up from there or have them ship to you. was only about $10 for a block. (i had a friend ship with his order and picked up at his place league night). so all in all a cheap fix. stern wants $150 to fix.

#20 9 years ago

I bought some blocks off Ebay, but Then realized I don't have any bad displays to test them with.

I need to make sure they are 1.9 mm thought

#22 9 years ago

I just ordered two blocks from Stern through my distributor at $7.50 each plus shipping. I'll be soldering it in myself and keeping one as a spare. .

#23 9 years ago

if you have a ghost line on the dmd...look closely...one of the dots is actually out and the light is dispersing along the vertical line. change out the block with the faulty dot and you will be fixed up! this dot will not show up in display test as the test runs the dmd at full voltage (i think there are 3 different voltages the dmd runs at).

I had pinball life order me a few of these - fixed a dead dot and a faint line like the one above. They do fit tightly, so it can be a pain in the next to get the solder out enough to have the block pop out. Easily the most difficult board work I've done. (I haven't tried SMT)

#25 9 years ago

Is there a manufacturer marking of any kind on the ones you got from Stern?

#26 9 years ago
Quoted from G-P-E:

They do, the same as the ones on the existing dmd . I can check tomorrow if you don't have one to look at. You don't have to remove the block, just look on one side of the dmd where they all face.

Led blocks are a pain in the ass to track down data for sometimes. And domestic sources have stupid high prices. One of the few things I have to get from the ebay china route to keep affordable.

You have to get stern to ship to your local distributor. Then have them ship to you or pick it up.

Going to dredge this back up. Anyone have a source for these 8x8 LED blocks (where they aren't $7 each)? I need a few to repair a couple displays.

8 x 8 dot matrix LED display block 1.9 mm 8 x 8 red common cathode 20 x 20mm, 16 pin

This is what I've found so far:
https://www.jameco.com/z/LD788BS-SS22-Display-Dot-Matrix-Hi-E-Red-78-8X8-635Nm-2V-10Ma-Cc-Ar-16-Pin_2132349.html
Anyone used these?

Added over 5 years ago:

I think the link above is wrong as the blocks are common cathode. Previous reports are that they should be common anode.

#35 5 years ago

I get mine from e-bay, 50 pieces at a time, for around a buck each.

I just can never remember if they're common anode or common cathode that I use.

#36 5 years ago
Quoted from HHaase:I get mine from e-bay, 50 pieces at a time, for around a buck each.

All the info I've found is that they are common cathode.

I saw comments from people saying that replacements they bought were different colors or brightness than the factory Stern displays. Are the ones you use a good match? A link to a suitable replacement would be appreciated.

#37 5 years ago

I honestly don't know how they would match the stern display, I use them for a different purpose.

I have a parts display and just pull off good blocks when I need

#39 3 years ago

Marco has these. Both blocks are red, one is not amber.

https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/112-0074-00

Quoted from ledblock:

http://www.ledist-opto.com/matrix.htm
Here we can see LA-078811SE1WB and LA-078811HWB, exactly the same part number as led blocks in Stern DMD.

#40 3 years ago

Why is one marked as amber if both are red?

#41 3 years ago

I'm not sure, I don't think Marco did their homework before listing it.

#42 3 years ago
Quoted from Crash:

Oops! Been a while since I had to change any blocks. Arent the majority of led displays stern used red anyways?

#43 3 years ago

I think all of them were red and Stern stuck to plasma for orange. I contacted a few people on these and see no evidence that Stern used orange LED blocks. The only orange/amber ones I'm aware of are from X-Pin and Vishay (though Vishay is out of their mind on pricing).

Had to fix a Ghost Busters display quick, got some of these from Jameco, they worked great.

What does it entail to install these? Much soldering?

#46 3 years ago
Quoted from pinaholic:

There are 8 pins top and bottom that need to be desoldered on each block. This one only had one block bad, and luckily it was on the outside so it was simple to get under it to pop it after I removed the solder.

Thanks for this, I'd basically given up after several unsuccessful attempts at finding a replacement a couple years ago. I've been scavenging blocks off an donor display.

@kawydud, Thanks for posting the link to the JameCo blocks.
Did the color of the JameCo blocks match the OEM color pretty well?
Also...may I use your picture in the PinWiki?
Thanks!

Yes, the color matched perfectly. I have fixed a few of them since I posted my original pictures. You can use the picture in PinWiki.
