Just as the subject says when I hit the start button fuse 701 immediately blows. Any ideas on what to check?

Fuse 701 serves fuses 704,705, and 706. See page D-170 and 171 of the manual. They are 70 volt coils.
Check fuses 704,705, and 706 to see if any one of those is blown to possibly narrow down the problem.
After checking fuses, I would 1st check to see if the drop target is fried/shorted since some people have been having problems with that recently.
Then check the coils near the shooter lane (the auto launch and trough VUK coils).
Also, looking at your posts for things you have dealt with recently, check and make sure that your ball-lock coil wiring is not shorting out somewhere.

Exactly. It was my drop target coil. List the playfield and see if you can move it up and down on the drop target..

704, 705, and 706 aren't blown. 702 tests fine but the little red led light that shows which fuses are working isn't coming on for 702.

Is the coin door closed?
I don't think 701 and 702 should have anything to do with each other except they are both 70 volt circuits.
I can't say why but fuse 701 is no longer blowing but the game now won't eject any balls from the trough. It's not even making noises like it's trying. I've had one issue after another lately most probably my fault because I stink at fixing machines. Had hope to have it up and running for when family comes over later today for Thanksgiving but frankly I've put hours and hours and am taking a break. Between trying to get it so the upper playfield switches which engage the winkie song and lights don't go off because of vibrations, the witch issue where it wouldn't go up or down or activate when hit by pinballs, fuses blowing and now this I'm just going to call a tech next week.
On a positive note let's all try to have a Happy Thanksgiving
