We were leaving SC's place tonight and my youngest asked, "Stern is basically the only pinball producer, right?"

I think there are going to be many thoughts on this one.

My answer, "Well, JJP is producing our WOZ that we ordered. He is working on the whitewood version now to work out the bugs and do artwork."

I think they have made the leap and have a product and orders. I consider them a manufacture. I would compare them as Ford v Lamborghini right now. Ford makes many cars, Lamborghini makes only a few very nice cars that many want but are not practical for all.

Maybe it is when it ships. Is that when the archive gets populated with the machine. I looked and WOZ is not there yet, but I know from the past that the machines get into the archive before the machine is released. We had that discussion about rating a machine before you ever play it before.

    I look forward to comments.

I think JJP should already be considered a pinball producer because of the response. 1,000 pre-orders already? (or close to it.)

Although I voted once the first game ships, because once you really get down to facts, you aren't producing pinball until you are getting the games out to the customers. I don't think building just a prototype makes you a producer, just a designer at that point.

Until you ship a game, you can't call yourself a producer in my opinion.

"Producer" implies production. Once those first machines ship to customers, he's an official pinball producer -- or, as Stern likes to call it, "maker of pinballs."

    This.

I've got a WOZ pre-ordered, but until it is built and shipped to me I still consider Stern to be the only game in town.

I agree with Raikus, you have to have produced a complete game before calling yourself a pinball producer.

Woz looks like a sure thing at this point, but yes, until it's out the door and in player's hands, the sale isn't complete. Otherwise you can call that australian guy who was going to reproduce Medieval Madness a "manufacturer".

Anyone know how he plans to build all these tables?
    will he-
    a) set up production in N.J. ?
    b) sub out production to Stern or the Chicago area?
    c) off shore to China, India, or Vietnam

    A. He rented (or purchased, I can't remember) a warehouse a block away from his current location in NJ.
