A lot has been made about the recent surge in private ownership of pins. I'd like to do a straw poll of Pinsiders to test how true this might be. I realize that (1) the poll is not "scientific," and (2) the brackets are not of equal length. (I am particularly interested in isolating each of the past three years, and the poll is already long enough. Obviously, the last three brackets need to be stacked to form a meaningful comparison with the others.) Despite these limitations, it still should be interesting to see the results.

Bought my 1st pin in 1978 from a tag sale a few towns over. I was 6mos shy of getting my drivers permit so I had to hire a college kid to haul it back home to me. It cost 30.00 to transport it and 75.00 for the pin. It was a fully working Tropic Fun. I've owned close to 400 since then.

2013 got a space jam at the beginning of Feb after spending my lunches playing LOTR and TF on location near my work in 2012, 2 weeks later I picked up a WW that was going cheap, 2 weeks after that and I wanted something in NIB condition so I picked up my HUO RBION. Now i'm out of space so will probably sell space jam and get a RFM or maybe TFTC. I'm addicted now.

#17 11 years ago

hello all, I just got my TFTC a month ago and loving it. I'm addicted and already looking for another.

1983 (senior in highschool) bought a Flash and Buck Rogers from a local operator. At that time I owned a few video games in bars.....Space Invaders, Sprint 2, Asteroids Deluxe, and Stunt Cycle.

Wow...been in this "hobby" since 1982 (31 years!)

#41 11 years ago
Quoted from smokey_789:

Well, I was on RGP forever but there was just too much angst over there so I migrated over to here..much more tranquil (at least for now). But I see it changing...FWIW, this happens on EVERY forum-whether you collect stamps, coins, antique radios or Mustangs-it happens. It appears that after a certain amount of time & discussion, human nature kicks in and people get pissy. I hope it won't take a foothold here, but we'll see.
Anyway, back on topic, during the early to mid '80s, I had an "in" with a local operator (dead now) and he would sell me all of his old just-off-route machines. I had a HUGE barn at the time and would fill it with both pins & videos. Videos were expensive at the time so it was something special if I got one of those. Wow, how times have changed! I think I have some pictures, circa 1984 of my barn filled with pins...I HAVE to find to scan it here!

This poll basically explains the price explosion, so hopefully we can sticky this so there will be an end to that discussion.

#46 11 years ago

#47 11 years ago

March 2011. Ended up getting 11 pins in 5 months, lol...

#48 11 years ago

Don't really feel like getting crapped on for the game I bought hahaha!

Edit: Holy crap, Annointed! That's ridiculous haha!

2006. I was given a non-working Gottlieb Big Shot. A few months later I bought a Tales from the Crypt for $1000 from 'Shaggy'.
