Been noticing how old games will tell you how many points each shot is worth, but new games don't do that. Obviously with solid state technology, many more things are possible, and shots are not always worth the same value.

Did this changeover happen right when we went to solid state? Was there a firm transition after which score values were never printed on the playfield again?

I know that Whirlwind has the million shot, and it actually says million, along with marks for the skill shot.
So some System-11 had limited amount of numbers visible, but at least some. I believe it was completely gone with the first DMD games.

Adding to above, I suppose as coding got better, the need for points on the playfield vanished, as points would depend on many more variables?

Not to mention, having points shown on the playfield kind of limits what you can do to the scoring in the code down the road!

I would say generally with DMDs. My DMD Maverick has no indicated point values on the PF, but my other 4 games do:

    Williams F-14 Tomcat: Bonus values
    Williams Taxi: Passenger tip values
    Williams Pinbot: Kickout hole values
    Bally Atlantis: Bonus values

    This is a great question.

The other thing to note on this, when a silk screening process was used to print the playfields. If there is less art work to deal with, the time it takes to trim the graphic into silk screen film for the lettering is more.

Now this is why the new tech in pinball should be animated OLED inserts. Program them and change them on the fly, the tech is currently used in many things, including slot machines, mixing consoles, and coming to keyboards near you.

Nice, but will probably drive NIB cost up to $12-15K+.

Interesting, I was thinking how my High Speed doesn't have points, but the lit freeway value progression is shown. Twilight Zone has the same thing. So does Funhouse. However, I don't think there are any other point values displayed on the playfield in those three games.

Most EMs, for example, will print out the point values of every shot.

At least, probably a lot more. The cost for casinos to purchase slot machines today is averaging $14,000 to over $20,000 depending on the model and features.

Both Funhouse and Twilight Zone have some point value numbers on the playfield, but not at every insert.

Ugh, so does High Speed (the bonus inserts, and when the spinners are lit for 1000).
