1Password is great. Let it generate crazy-long passwords for you, and rest easy.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles fightnightfz. I am thankful that the few folks I have met from here have been extremely helpful and friendly.

Password managers like 1Password (as swampfire mentions) or LastPass can be very helpful.

But .... If one decides to use a password manager (applauds) I prefer to use a non 3rd party service. Both 1Password and LastPass (while convenient) have had large attacks on their database. I don't believe that these attacks have been successful, yet it demonstrates the issues of bundling all of one's passwords onto a 3rd party service.

I prefer KeePass as a locally installed password manager that doesn't rely upon a central database on the net. http://keepass.info/
1.x for single-user use -- or 2.x version for office use where you need multiple people in the database at one time.

If you need access from multiple devices, you can place the database file onto the cloud service of your choice.

Can you provide a citation for the 1password attack on their database?

My copy of 1password stores on local disk, and/or dropbox, iCloud, etc. And entirely encrypted client-side. There's nothing that AgileBits can touch remotely; or any of the cloud providers, without the encryption key.

I figured it was gloryhole however that would have been my second guess.

It was GH4eva but with the newly required multiple digits I had to change it.

    Hey jfesler,

It appears that you have a great point. It was LastPass that was attacked as they keep the database in their cloud. I had forgotten that 1Password was native and had grouped the two programs together in my mind after the recent attack on LastPass. I apologize about the error.

So, what I was mis-remembering about 1Password was a separate issue with their hash function back in 2013. ArsTech had an article (http://goo.gl/5LqvGl) about it along with some other online sources. I am sure it was fixed/handled back then. I don't use it so I haven't followed along. I personally trust AgileBits as developers; they have some really sharp talent. I just happen to use something else.

5-10% of the population is sociopathic or has empathy issues. Does it surprise me that people are being hacked? Some but more so from the perspective of who has time for doing dumbshhit like that. I don't. I read this once that people who get obsessive over something from their childhood often are trying to recapture something. A memory. I bet you see this bad behavior in any collecting hobby. Something means way more than it should to someone.

We've also run some good stories at Ars with suggestions for how to manage your passwords, either or both of these are good reads:

pinball is not crazy. people are.

This whole thing blows my mind. Never would think this would happen in a pinball forum.

Also +1 for keepass. Feels like every site has a different requirement of how the password should be structured.
