    I haven't seen it mentioned yet, but there's another reason to give the ball a nudge. Slingshots are dangerous because they increase the side-to-side movement of the ball, which is wicked dangerous. Imparting a nudge forward as it hits the slingshot changes some of that momentum to a more vertical trajectory, and gives you a better chance of getting the ball under control.
