and don't say this one...
to me, any technical/maintanace/repair question is never dumb. Better to ask than do something wrong. Sometimes it would be nice if people would try and find an old thread that already touches on the subject, but it doesn't really bother me.
As far as repair questions, I think there is kind of a built in hierarchy. If you are top tier, like Vid or LTG you answer the tough ones that only a select few know about. If its an easy one, I think its the job of the newer people in the hobby to help out the truly new. I only have some repair and maintenance experience. so whenever there is an easier question someone has I always jump to help them to pay it forward since others helped me when I had the "dumb" questions, like how to fold a backbox down on a system 11.
As far as dumb questions, I think its the leading ones you already know the answer to, and look like its just trolling. Like the one recently where the question was: "did anyone on pinside hear the economy sucks?" Obviously the poster already had an agenda and didn't really "need" an answer. Now he could have done it differently if he had simply opened it up to discussion such as "has the economy affected your buying selling habits?" but his was simply trolling, and he also never returned to the thread. In my opinion, those are the dumb ones.
What is LIONMAN?
When are the (insert pre-ordered pin here) shipping?
Should I buy a pin from this choggard guy?
I am overseas, should I buy from MAD?
For me it is about the timing
The week Stern releases a new game, and somebody HAS to ask , 'What is next?'
Anything regarding someone's political and religious views. I don't think there should be a place for those topics on a pinball forum.
All the questions that basically boil down to "I really like Pin X, but Pin Y is ranked higher; which should I get?"
that "i still live at home with my dad and don't have a job because i have a weird sleep disorder - should I blow all my money on a machine?" thread
When someone continually asks for advice on a pin that they have no intention of buying.
The questions I'm most annoyed by are "Will (name any pin) fit in (X vehicle)" A tape measure will answer that question.
