Santa got me a gift card at Harbor Freight. What would you get to help with your pinball habit?

    Table lift

Tumbler & Tumbler media (walnut shells) - Break that Mystic down and start shinning the parts up!

I wouldn't buy any hand tools there personally.

    #4 4 years ago

    Tumbler
    Media for tumbler
Tool chest to store pinball parts

Here are some storage containers. Especially the flat boxes with 18-24 compartments
    https://www.harborfreight.com/search?order=price-low&q=storage

Here’s a tool box that I use. I store tools in the top tray, and fuses, coils, sleeves, door locks, etc. in the four pull out containers. I bring it with me when I buy a game. Keep a new coin door lock in this toolbox so if you buy a game without a coin door lock or have to drill it, you can install a new one in two minutes and you don’t have to listen to the door flap open and close on the ride home.

Always remember to bring your 20% off coupon!

The 1000lb. hydraulic table cart. That thing comes in handy for getting pins down from a tailgate, putting legs on/taking them off, or shuttling pins around the gameroom. You'll either have to modify the handle to swing down or just leave it loose when needed. https://www.harborfreight.com/1000-lbs-capacity-hydraulic-table-cart-60438.html

This is one of my favorite things from HF. Not to be confused with the cheap 4in-1 screwdriver they sell; this one is super nice and never goes on sale. I use a 20% coupon on them from time to time. The goal is to have one for every drawer in my house and both of my cars. For pinball they have both types of screwdriver along with a 1/4" and 5/16" nut driver.

    https://www.harborfreight.com/6-in-1-aluminum-professional-screwdriver-set-66586.html

Also, magnetic pickup tool, nut/screw/washer kits, e-clip assortment, Super Lube, mechanics gloves, nitrile gloves and on and on.

The cheap 4 in 1 screwdriver is actually the perfect tool for removing playfield posts. When you remove the bit it's hollow and the same size as the hex on the posts.

Another vote for the hydraulic lift cart. It comes in handy for lots of moving stuuf.

    Sorry a 6in1 is something I can't skimp on!

The lift table or large tumbler with coarse walnut media would be top pics. Smaller stuff would be the LED forehead light or a high wattage soldering gun to heat up locktite posts.

    Moving blankets.

Just curious, how and why did Harbor Freight become the go-to pinball tool place? Had never been in to one until I got on Pinside. Quality of items there varies, but I have bought things like blankets from there.

Because they are cheap. Personally I think their quality on a lot of things sucks. Tumblers and the lifts are decent, but I'm not a fan of their tools, straps, etc.

60" clamp bars - Perfect for repairing split cabinets seems and bad gussets.

    Thanks

    Magnetic trays

    #22 4 years ago

    Lift
    Tumbler & Media
    Magnetic Trays
    Moving Blankets
    Plastic Parts Storage Containers

As for the rest it's very hit & miss in terms of quality & durability. I've got a bench grinder and drill press that are over 10 years old from them and still work, and other things lasted 2 uses before breaking.....

    #23 4 years ago

I'd suggest avoiding power tools or any hand tools that require significant force to be applied. There are too many issues with quality of Harbor Freight tools. Stick to the good name brands for those items. Harbor Freight is good for moving blankets, magnetic trays, cleaning materials, etc.

    #24 4 years ago

My wife got me this tool cart, before someone else gave me the gift card
    https://www.harborfreight.com/30-in-4-drawer-blue-tech-cart-56391.html

The pin is at my office, so I can roll this around to where I need it and roll it away. Turns out, there is room for a second pin...

I like HF, depending on the item. When shopping for tools, I’ll check out HF, Home Depo, Lowes and Amazon.

Are ignition wrenches thin enough to slip between the plastics & the nut on the post below them?

Here's my Mystic update: soldered wires on two switches. My first solders on the machine. Hadn't soldered anything in decades. Everything works now besides the tilts.

The machine is back to all incandescents. Looks great. All new rubbers, except some were missing from the kit, and are being sent. Need to replace the lamp socket on one pop bumper.

The slingshots have started firing multiple times when hit. If there is guide to adjusting these, please post the link. I couldn’t find it.

The machine plays great. I’m very happy with it.

Don't want to derail the thread topic, but since you asked.

    I have one, works great.

The rubber ring rests against a metal arm that is sticking up out of the playfield. The arm is probably too tight against the rubber, causing the slingshot to fire several times instead of once. Try adjusting the arm away from the rubber ring slightly. See if that fixes the problem.

    #27 4 years ago

Ring too tight could also be the cause

PBR also sells a Palnut Removal Tool (item# GTB-26181+)

Great for removing slide out E.M. backglasses without scraping on the light board and stuck playfield glass. https://www.harborfreight.com/4-1-2-half-inch-diameter-suction-cup-40993.html

    Thanks everyone!

    #31 4 years ago

Pinball lift!!, they have a 500lb and 1000lb capacity lifts and my back never stops thanking me (I got the 1000 lb one as it looked very sturdy and has worked great since I got it). Also, they have a great selection of spare springs (variety pack style) that come in handy for drop target mechs and the like.

From the pin or his underwear?

    #33 4 years ago

My thing with harbor Freight tools is, if I need a specialized tool to do a job, that I am going to use maybe a couple of times, I go there. if I need that tool to do my job, I buy better.

Turn the game off. Remove the plastic over the sling shot kicker and leaf blade switches. Pull on the rubber ring around the posts, so you have equal pressure on all sides, not tight on the kicker/leaf blade switch side. The leaf blade switches - front long one should be resting on the rubber ring, not pushing it or away from it. Shorter rear one should be close enough so the slightest ball hit triggers it, yet vibration doesn't. There are two leaf blade switches, one each side of the kicker. At least one needs a little adjusting. When bending forward or backward, get as close to the fiberboard spacers as you can.

Table pump lift ,I got one from there just had too made up a big angle wood on the table so now it can pick up my pinball machines too move them around

It's even better as one end is 1/4" for the post screws and the other end is 5/16" for the post cap nuts. both also used multiple times other places on the machine. I have a couple lying around that I don't even know where the bits for them are.

the lift table is pretty awesome as well.

    #37 4 years ago

Evaporust (and their rust block spray after using it so the rust doesn’t come back )

Moving blankets (diff sizes and cheap )

Small 2 armed magnifying glass holder (when you need another hand or two)

2 sided bin cart on casters (for small parts)

6 pack alligator clip end jumpers

    Playfield waxing pads (for dremel)

That’s all I can think of off hand. But I have to go back this weekend so I’ll check again

Servicing pinball machines doesn't require SnapOn quality tools so many of the
    things I have in my pinball tool box came from HF;
    el-cleapo (or even free) DVM
4-in-1 screw driver (really like these)
two styles of long nose pliers
    1/4" socket set
    palm held LED lights w/magnet

    $3.99 shipping blankets

Thanks for posting. Looks like the hub broke out of the rim. A periodic inspection of those welds will be on my "to do" list. I sold my blue HF unit a while back, but now have a Northern tool one that is similar, but has a longer frame. Pretty sure the same wheels though.

    #45 4 years ago

I'm a snap on buyer, but pins are away from shop. 1/4 socket set in their case works great and better quality than I expected. Wouldnt try to m make a living using these tools but pretty decent actually. For light work

So, I spend a LOT at HF. Here are some of my MUST have items.

This is hands down, the best Flashlight in the world. IMHO. Just buy GOOD 18650 batteries for it, from amazon or a vape shop.
    https://www.harborfreight.com/390-lumen-magnetic-slim-bar-folding-led-work-light-63958.html?_br_psugg_q=braun
I just bought 4 more of this flashlight for $18.99 each on Black Friday.

I use this tool box for my hand tools. I fill the top with fuses.

    Test Wires

    Pinball Dolly
    https://www.harborfreight.com/500-lbs-capacity-hydraulic-table-cart-61405.html

This Pelican knock off case, for storing my EXPENSIVE tools in, like my solder station and desolder gun, DMM, Scope, stuff like that.

Gloves to protect your hands and the pin parts.

    And this bit set.

This is my HF table lift I made a top for it for the pinball machines

    image (resized).jpegimage (resized).jpeg
    #49 4 years ago

All great suggestions. Thanks. Sorry about the hand dolly. Hope the game is restorable.

I might use the gift card for the HF ring roller, which doesn’t get rave reviews, but it’s probably ok for hobbyist use. (For my other hobby. Shhhh.)

Love that the 4inone screwdriver works as a nut driver. How cool is that? The flashlight magnet is a great idea.

    #50 4 years ago

I've bought the dolly that everyone else recommends. I also get my microfiber towels there.
