Quoted from luvthatapex2:

Boooooooo no Heavy Metal movie pinball. Very misleading.

What part of Stern's announcement mentioned a movie? Just because a bunch of you guys grew up smoking weed to softcore cartoon porn (with a decidedly non-metal soundtrack) doesn't discount the hundreds of issues of the magazine it's based on.

#6954 4 years ago
Quoted from luvthatapex2:

So this is going to be a "Heavy Metal" soundtrack of metal songs and probably some original graphics to go with the title.

Sounds good to me.

#6985 4 years ago
Quoted from TreyBo69:

I would guess they ordered 100 and have the option to do another 50-100 if the demand is there.

If I was rich I'd be all over this thing. There's gotta be at least 100 wealthy Heavy Metal fans who'll pony up eight grand for a cool hunk of nostalgia.

#6988 4 years ago
Quoted from TreyBo69:

Yet Star Wars Home Edition didn't set the world on fire and there are way more wealthy Star Wars fans that could pony up four grand for a cool toy.

Star Wars fans aren't exactly underserved for expensive collectibles. But your point is well taken. Fandom doesn't necessarily equal sales.

#7070 4 years ago

I’d enjoy a Thor pin with the humor and vivid artwork of Ragnarok and (presumably) the upcoming Taika Waititi fourth film.

Mission Impossible, John Wick, and Fast & Furious all sound boring as shit. Want a generic middle-aged action hero game? Get a 24. What art would a John Wick pin have, old dude wearing black fighting other dudes wearing black in a dark room? I just don’t see a game there.

#7077 4 years ago
Quoted from Thunderbird:

Get Smart would be a big seller.

I’ll take the under.

#7138 4 years ago
Quoted from TreyBo69:

Star Wars is a chess game of depth

I've heard this SW/chess comparison more than once, but I can't say I agree. It's a pretty straightforward mode + multiball game, with shot multipliers, which don't make the game any deeper. I'd compare it to backgammon, with its use of the doubling cube; you can ignore it and just play the game, or you can raise the stakes.

I'd give the chess-like compliment to Game of Thrones.

Quoted from Tranquilize:

I'd take the flipper fade any day to have a real board to work on.

I wouldn't. Played a 70 minute game where I was two shots from Valinor, but the ring shot had become impossible. I'll take my chances with Spike boards.

#7508 3 years ago
Quoted from Mr_Outlane:

I found a simple solution for not caring about stereo sound on LOTR or any other pin.

So did I. Speakers are 20" apart and five feet from your head in a playing stance. It's irrelevant.

Quoted from bigchief99:

Nothing against Keith making a Godzilla game if that is true......was hoping he was going to make a Jaws game if that game was ever being considered..

Jaws was the internal codename for JP2. No way they'd use that if actual Jaws was even on the radar as a theme.

#7658 3 years ago
Quoted from J85M:

Yeah they would; they would just code name it Teeth.

Yes, Jaws would have a codename, every game does. My point is they wouldn't use the license of an upcoming game as another game's codename. Tips their hand, and would just be confusing around the office. "How's Jaws coming along? Not actual movie Jaws, I mean fake Jaws."

Quoted from J85M:

No licence is off limits if Stern can shift a tonne of them it will get made.

Of course it's not off-limits. But it wasn't being considered at the time JP2 was designed, or they would have avoided the name. If you disagree you simply don't understand how these things work.

As someone who grew up a massive nerd, I gotta say, you nerds are killin' me with this Harry Potter crap.

#7689 3 years ago
Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

People dont even want to admit they watched the fast and furious movies, let alone that they enjoyed them.

I've never seen one but the trailers are like if that Disturbed song that goes "OH WAH AH AH AH!" was a movie. Could not sit through one even with hot buttered popcorn.

Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

You want a classic car movie? Watch Vanishing point. Freaking classic.

Or along the same lines, Drive. Not that either could be a pin, but great movies.

#7699 3 years ago
Quoted from TheLaw:

Cliff Martinez, best in the biz!

...only after the director had Johnny Jewel score the film, and the studio replaced him since he wasn't a big name. They paid Cliff to mimic Johnny's style. But the soundtrack still has a few songs from bands on Johnny's label Italians Do It Better. That whole sound was one of the director's inspirations for the vibe of the film.

Sorry, music geek tangent.

although Wonka and WOZ are whimsical like TMNT, it just doesn't have the following.

Lol, ask someone under the age of forty.

#7938 3 years ago
Quoted from drfrightner:

This new TMNT artwork looks like its for ages 5 to 12.

That, plus people who were 5 to 12 in 1987-1996.

Quoted from drfrightner:

Why didn't they do a game based on the films,

Because almost no TMNT fan would prefer that. And neither did Nickelodeon, apparently.

Quoted from drfrightner:

whats up with that super silly looking van...

I take it you've never seen the show. Not every theme is for everyone. I'm guessing you're a bit north of the age demo for this one.

Quoted from drfrightner:

my prediction one of if not the weakest selling Stern ever.

Guns N Roses is going to STOMP TMNT into the dirt.

Set up the terms of a sales bet and tell me where to escrow my wager.

#7962 3 years ago

Just imagine how long these playfields have cured.

#7968 3 years ago

Is the only thing missing on TMNT Pro playfield the diverter?

Quoted from maffewl:

The JP franchise is a lot bigger than TMNT?

Yes. $5 billion and counting in worldwide box office.
JP box office.pngJP box office.png
Plus all the non-film stuff.

#7976 3 years ago
Quoted from maffewl:

Ok... so only comparing movie box office dollars.

I said "plus all the non-film stuff." My kid is a huge JP fan and he literally doesn't know the movies exist. Duplo, Lego, bigger toys, cartoon, books, stickers, etc. Feel free to add it all up yourself.

#7977 3 years ago
Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

Dinosaurs arent hard to sell.

Exactly.

#7981 3 years ago
Quoted from maffewl:

By that comparison, Stern should make a Candy Crush game next.

I'm not saying what makes a good game. You said what's bigger.

#7988 3 years ago
Quoted from maffewl:

JP is not a lot bigger franchise than TMNT.

Agree to disagree I guess.

#8068 3 years ago
Quoted from Psw757:

I tend to like Steve R games and he’s apparently on Zep and next. Now that it’s a new layout vs a 70/80’s rehash I’m pretty excited for this.

So it's a 90/00/10's rehash instead.

#8070 3 years ago
Quoted from John_I:

BTTF is a hard pass for me.

I don't care enough about themes to be automatically in or out, but I don't see a game there. Who's your adversary, Biff? Time itself? What's worse, nonstop Huey Lewis, or fake Huey Lewis? It'll have Christopher Lloyd custom callouts, I guess. No way you can get any Michael J. Fox involvement, unless you're talking about the one that works at Pinball Life.

It's a pretty shallow theme, with an already shallow pin to match. Paper-thin sci-fi romantic comedy. Funny that our generation has so much '80s nostalgia invested in a movie that's actually a love letter to the '50s. Everyone wants it to be 30 years ago.

#8071 3 years ago
Quoted from Psw757:

Whatever that is maybe I guess....
I was implying that it wasn’t a retread of seawitch, quicksilver etc...
I’ll take a retread of Iron Maiden with Zep art, music, callouts etc...

In that case you need KME to design it. Steve only does Steve layouts. There are two: third flipper, or no third flipper.

#8129 3 years ago
Quoted from Jackontherocks:

how many Stern titles have that option?

Most of them? None as profane as Sopranos, though.

#8132 3 years ago
Quoted from zr11990:

How about a Elton John pin? How crazy and flamboyant would that be.

Not very, unfortunately.

#8140 3 years ago

Zero chance Stern reveals another new cornerstone title "very soon." Hot Wheels or Heavy Metal is my bet.

#8149 3 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

Playfield art design is exceedingly ugly, which is weird given all the source material they have to work with.

This is the saddest part. The license is primarily known for stunning visuals, and it's the ugliest playfield in years. Should have been a case of "looks amazing but not worth $8k!"

#8155 3 years ago
Quoted from Lounge:

Hot Wheels is being done by AP.

Jack was teasing his next Dead Flip reveal, which could be anything.

#8174 3 years ago
Quoted from Lounge:

Sure... but Stern isn’t doing Hot Wheels.

Who said Stern is doing Hot Wheels? I said Stern isn't revealing a new cornerstone game anytime soon, so Jack's reveal will be Hot Wheels or Heavy Metal. I played Hot Wheels at the factory, pretty sure I know who's making it, numbnuts.

#8179 3 years ago
Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

Don’t forget EHOH, just another top 10 pin

Let's not get crazy.

#8255 3 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

There's no other way to explain that they do not have them even when designers KNOWN for using subways (some of them EXTENSIVELY) come to Stern and suddenly stop.

How about “they are boring and suck.”

#8292 3 years ago
Quoted from jorro:

#8306 3 years ago
Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

So we can emphasize the movie that decided to make Bond a poker player instead of baccarat because poker fascination was at an all time high back then? No thanks.

I'm not a big Bond fan so I didn't realize his game of choice was baccarat. That game is a joke, zero skill. Poker is a huge step up story-wise for a guy who's supposed to be a suave secret agent or whatever. It involves psychology, combinatorics, people reading, calculating direct and implied odds on the fly, etc. It's like flipping coins vs. chess.

Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

Also, nothing says a Bond adventure like those amazing card game scenes am i right?

I'm with you there. Almost every poker scene in movies or TV sucks.

I wish music pins just had an option to play the songs without words as well, instrumental only while the quotes go out. Any way this could be done?

I know someone who replaced all the Metallica tracks with Guitar Hero or Rock Band instrumentals.

#8383 3 years ago

I think that's like, the point of downvoting? If you're opposed to the concept in general that's cool I guess.

#8415 3 years ago

I agree with pretty much your entire Pearl Jam argument except that they are the most somber, straight-laced, image-free band imaginable. Just don't see a game there. One of their biggest hits is a dirge about a kid who shot himself at school. Their other biggest hit is a ballad about a kid with learning disabilities who gets beat up.

#8439 3 years ago
Quoted from Utesichiban:

How did Stern ever get the full license for a huge movie like Ghostbusters with several big name actors but can't/won't for a mid-70's movie like Jaws?

Scheider, Shaw & Hamilton are dead. Richard Dreyfuss probably doesn't need the money, so if he doesn't care about pinball, good luck. I guess they can afford Lorraine Gary.

#8458 3 years ago
Quoted from Utesichiban:

With most of the actor's dead and the movie being so long ago, how tough would it really be to get the full license?

Dead guys aren't good at returning phone calls. Negotiating with their estates is a task I don't wish on anyone.

#8460 3 years ago
Quoted from curban:

Dont understand why Tarantino’s movies never ended up in a pin (except homebrews).

Tarantino loves kitsch, I bet you could talk him into an affordable pinball deal.

When QT first met with Travolta about being in Pulp Fiction, QT insisted on playing vintage board games all evening. Grease, Welcome Back Kotter, Saturday Night Fever. He asked John to quote lines in character while playing, so he'd definitely understand everyone's desire for their precious callouts.

-15
#8473 3 years ago

Gonna see if I can break pinside's all-time downvote record. Ghostbusters was an overrated, average comedy, carried entirely by prime Bill Murray's screen presence and swagger. 2016 reboot was a perfectly fine popcorn flick.

...and when they finally make it, get ready for "see I told you so!"

#8605 3 years ago
Quoted from TheLaw:

People are obsessed with looking for shit like that but in reality I don;t think it happens.

And if it does it's just coincidence/luck. Every year is some multiple of 5 anniversary for something related to a theme.

#8691 3 years ago
Quoted from mbeardsley:

I was really surprised how the Stern Star Trek was such a rehash of ST:TNG. It really just seems like the same design squeezed into a standard body machine with the cannons removed.

I've never liked STTNG and always said "if they made this in a standard body with regular outlanes, I'd buy one." Stern did, and I did! Those wide cannons ruin the playfield geometry. Worst slingshots ever. Good riddance. Also, no lame video mode.

Yes I realize I'm in the minority.

#8692 3 years ago
Quoted from luvthatapex2:

SR has found a successful formula at Stern he follows and he doesn't deviate too much from it so his next game will look and feel familiar.

Steve has two games: 2 flipper & 3 flipper. I hope he proves me wrong.

#8695 3 years ago
Quoted from Midway-Man:

Personally I would love to see another Gomez game.

My impression is that he's busy enough being the EVP/CCO that he only works on special projects, no cornerstones. Deadpool seems to be an outlier, emergency bailout of you-know-who.

#8714 3 years ago
Quoted from Tranquilize:

If you don't know how to adjust slings, replace rubbers, and play Riker poker, yeah the game sucks.

I know how to do all that, thanks, just never cared for the game. Riker poker even more boring than the pattern memorization mode. I'm not sure how you adjust the trapezoid shape out of the slings, or make them not dead near the top where there is no switch or kicker.

#8738 3 years ago

Tanio is due to code a game, right? Deadpool was his last AFAIK.

Bummer if SR's pin is maybe getting bumped.

I dunno if it's getting bumped so much as he averages one Stern game every 18 months withOUT a pandemic, and it's only been 16 months since BK3.

#8973 3 years ago
Quoted from Pixel8Arcade:

Think about how the game could penalize a player by using the Time Stone and roll back your score.

Losing score is never fun. Casual players will think it's a bug or just feel ripped off.

Designers & artists don't leak games. All these Jaws puns & jokes from KME & ZY mean you guys aren't getting a shark game anytime soon.

#8989 3 years ago
Quoted from Jomo33:

It would have to be one of these 5 (due to popularity): Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Dr Strange, or Black Panther. In that order
IMO.

In that order? Your number five is #1 on that list at the box office. Dr. Strange made half of Black Panther's haul. He's a supporting character at best.

#9093 3 years ago

Why would they release Iron-Man again. To be even more busy?

That's kinda the goal.

#9096 3 years ago

Futurama would've been great, but that spaceship sailed 7 years ago. Show went off the air right when Stern got into their modern groove of great games.

#10348 3 years ago
Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

Yeah, who wants a game based on some outdated theme that people love.....oh, most pinball fans lol.

Stern themes have to sell thousands worldwide. Modestly successful American TV show canceled seven years ago? Good luck with that. I dunno if Futurama will ascend to "nostalgia" status.

That said, Futurama is in the top 10% of viability in this batshit crazy thread.

So what's the relationship between Stern and Ozzy if not for a future pin? Doubtful that his appearance is solely for his music being sampled in an upcoming game!?

Quoted from haiderdj:

Any convincing theories why Ozzie & McFarlane would be at Stern's Comicon booth if it's NOT a Venom or Spawn or Ozzy pin???

Ozzy has a signing with Todd McFarlane because they just did a comic & music video together, and previously collaborated on action figures. Stern is sharing a booth with Rebellion Republic (heavy metal merch), just like they did in 2019 (with the addition of Nuclear Blast records that year). Jody from Stern used to work in the metal-leaning side of the music industry, so I suspect those booth roommates are due to his connections.

There might be no Ozzy/McFarlane/Stern connection aside from "metal booth synergy."

As much as I appreciate the idea of an old-school hip-hop game in theory, I just feel like for a modern pin you need an artist with some kind of larger mythology or imagery. Most classic hip-hop is about the artists themselves, or life in general. Afrika Bambaataa could carry a pin thematically, but I ain't holdin' my breath.

I am NOT a Wu-Tang fan by any stretch, they're after my time, but it's the best rap act I can think of for a pin.

#28780 1 year ago

It's been a while since I played Maverick, but a friend walked me through the rules once. There's something cool like hitting particular targets to make increasingly difficult poker hands where you build up some cumulative award. Or maybe I dreamt it all, don't recall exactly.

Dad rockers probably dislike anime too much for Stern to take the risk, but maybe an older anime like Speed Racer could be appealing.

I grew up on Speed Racer and Robotech, enjoy Miyazaki, but anything with a Naruto or Pokemon vibe is eye cancer to me. And I'm something of a dad rocker, so... story checks out?

Quoted from Ballderdash:

“It was a great game, it’s a pretty dated title right now”

Gary got it exactly backwards. It's one of the worst games of all time, but the title couldn't be hotter for all you nostalgia-obsessed grayhairs.

Of course he can't say any of their games are anything but great.

Quoted from bigguybbr:

If you want to talk BTTF hype, that's the better thread.

Their ravenous desire is bound by neither thread nor logic until such day that Gary Stern bestows upon them a Christopher Lloyd & Huey Lewis game.

Just imagine if the LE cabinet is a massive side view of a Delorean in silver foil, with brushed stainless armor. Pandemonium.

#29307 1 year ago

Nah, usually a teaser leading up to it. Or word leaking from distributors that they were shown/told something.

#29401 1 year ago
Quoted from ticktockman:

If it’s just the one Insider Connected update pushed out across all 18 games then that post is a little deceiving on Stern’s end.

GZ update is pretty huge. Only one I checked, can't speak to the other games.

#29411 1 year ago

Looks great until you touch it.

#29594 1 year ago

Really enjoyed the WWDITS film, but after it was over, felt like exactly enough, no desire to watch hours and hours of a TV version. They definitely found a fresh comedic angle on all the common vampire tropes & lore. Also I feel like without Taika onscreen my interest level would drop dramatically. But hey, glad to hear it's a good show.

"Teen Wolf, great film!" - Pinside theme cognoscenti.

I guess you gotta give the people what they want.

If everyone knows besides us, why not just post them here and save everyone the trouble?

If you pay attention over the years, you learn which posters actually know things. Of course grail theme bros only hear what they want to hear.

Quoted from Quiksilva86:

Warped Tour vibe with a collection of early 2000s punk music. Skate themed with ramps, Concrete pool etc.

One of the better leftfield themes suggested in this batshit thread. Those kids are currently aging into suburban homeowners with disposable income. Pop punk is good high-energy pinball music. Skating lends itself perfectly to modern playfield design. Radical 2.0 would be super fun to shoot.

Alice Cooper themed pin.
You lose on a technicality.

That’s grandpa rock.

#30167 1 year ago
Quoted from mpdpvdpin:

Also…ACNC is less a “music pin” than a haunted house pin. The music is secondary to the concept.

This is very true. Sadly, I've played multiple games of ACNC where I fail to start even one actual Alice Cooper song.

#30173 1 year ago
Quoted from mpdpvdpin:

Oh also…this couldn’t be true as the game automatically awards a mode on ball three if you ate it on the first two.

I haven't played it since very early code.

Easiest way to know BTTF isn’t coming soon: Elwin would 1000% do that title.

Why waste him on a title that's 1000% guaranteed to be a sales blockbuster? Throw any designer at it, spend all your energy getting the precious "assets" that everyone cares so much about.

#30821 1 year ago
Quoted from McDoom:

This is the title we need.

Bruce Timm is producing a new Batman: Caped Crusader animated series. This week HBO Max canceled its series order, but Warner is shopping it elsewhere, so... eventual Stern machine? Of course everyone weaned on Nolan Dark Knight and the somehow even darker latest film would cry about how it's "too kiddie."

if Stern doesn’t release information today about their next cornerstone today (which they themselves said August). I will never believe another word they say.

The lesson Stern will take from this is going back to telling the nail-biters jack shit. New game drops when it drops.

I'd go He-Man over GI Joe.
It's visually more interesting and doesn't involve guns or the military.

Same reason Stern should take a huge pass on Maverick. It's like GI Joe without all the colorful characters. Movie is already old news. And you're never gonna get Cruise. That one's never happening, guys.

The jets are the starts of Top Gun.

Try selling a licensed movie game without the lead actor.

Gottlieb/Premier already did that game, it's called Gold Wings.

Quoted from ahdelarge:

So many cool themes for pinball and the JJP rumours are Billy Joel and now.....Elton John. Groan....

But they already did a game with a super-annoying piano in the middle of the playfield! (one of my many GnR peeves)

#32610 1 year ago
Quoted from Only_Pinball:

None of it. He said on a resent podcast that he started over from scratch.

On one hand, it's a shame that Steve's final Stern game will never see the light of day. On the other, I've played his two layouts enough to last a lifetime.

#32630 1 year ago
Quoted from Ballderdash:

How many more sharks you wanna see?

Zero as well. I watched Jaws for the first time yesterday, in a theater, in 3D. Great human drama, but if anyone thinks that story is begging to be a modern pinball machine, you're blinded by nostalgia and/or your love of the film. All the best scenes are monologues or arguments. I guess you guys want Quint's USS Indianapolis story to play in the background while you shoot colored arrows. Whee.

#32791 1 year ago
Quoted from Mando:

its a pinball machine you think all the pin geeks are here morning the queen?

Nah, but some folks they worked with in the UK might be. Shouldn't slow down the critical path, which is manufacturing. I don't think they took the week off from that. Maybe they'll have pros on location by reveal day like with Stranger Things.

#32827 1 year ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

I think you're just fooled by the bad playfield art and inserts that look like early 2000 sterns or SEGAs, i.e. BAD. I think the layout has real potential, and maybe the playfield art actually looks better in person. Reserving judgment for now.

Playfield art looks brutal to me too. Hope it shoots great. One thing for certain is they always look better in person, at least to me.

what about Ballys selling 20k units of a single model pin??

Zero home entertainment options. People used to leave their house.

#33186 1 year ago
Quoted from NoSkills:

Just seems a weird use of their most popular designer to have his cornerstone games 2 years apart

Makes perfect sense when his last cornerstone is still selling faster than they can make it, after almost a year. Releasing a new KME cornerstone now would just cannibalize Godzilla sales.

#33192 1 year ago

Thankfully I know some folks in a higher tax bracket, might get to play it.

#33237 1 year ago
Quoted from Grantman:

The only LE number that should be slightly more expensive than a regular LE on this new game is 007/1000, unless Gomez kept that one for himself.

You're paying them for the hassle of digging that number plate out of the bin and making sure it goes on a certain game to a certain distributor. Luckily the number is completely meaningless, so even at $1 all sane people should be out.

#33238 1 year ago

I hope they don't F up the new Indiana Jones Movie.

As long as audiences value nostalgia at any cost over fresh ideas, you will continue to get shitty cash-in movies. Raiders of the Lost Ark was new once upon a time, and it was great. But an action movie starring a frikkin' 80-year-old man? Give me and him a break.

Quoted from Zen_Monkey:

i think dune theme done well could be an amazing pin. there’s a lot of cool visual style that could lend itself to something really cool.

Maybe for Jodorowsky's Dune, but I don't want a gray & tan game based on the new films.

#38009 9 months ago
Quoted from Zen_Monkey:

Good pinball sells the theme more than a theme drives good pinball imho.

Good theme sells a thousand LEs and the entire first run of pro & premium in a single day. That's what factories need to stay in business. Good games have legs for multiple years of re-runs, icing on the cake.
