TMNT. This coming week. Borg. Dwight.

#7756 3 years ago

Keith is doing Godzilla. The Toho one they swiped out from under Charlie.

#18863 2 years ago

Stern will and has let licenses expire without ever making anything with them. But they did Charlie wrong on Godzilla, and they know it. They will make it.

Stern gets dick kicked every time some other manufacturer manages to put a new title on the showroom floor. I’m sure Gary and George and the guys are all wiping their tears with the sales receipts for the thousands of games they shipped and sold since the last Spooky game was announced.

It’s Godzilla. For October.

#19133 2 years ago
Quoted from Walk:When Stern remakes a vault edition do they ever update them? I.E. The Walking Dead and potentially replacing the DMD for the updated LCD?
As for totally new, has anyone considered World of Warcraft? Huge IP. It’d make for a beautiful art package.

Yes and no. They did give us comic art Spider-man vault, and had to change out of the Sony licensed J Jonah Jameson voice over. But they don’t create entirely new content. Changing from a DMD to the large monitor would require all new programming of all different assets. Never happened before.

#19136 2 years ago
Quoted from Chuckwebster:

They did it with Batman66. I wouldn't rule anything out.

BM66 is not a vault edition.

#19141 2 years ago
Quoted from Chuckwebster:

I guess it's about how you classify games as vaults. Stern may never have called it a vault, but its a recycled design of BM Dark Knight.

I classify a vault as a “vault edition.” Not only was BM66 not a vault edition, it was a high end, ultra premium edition that required collaboration with a licensing specialist, offered no pro version, and was marketed as its own specialty game, the likes of which had not ever been pulled off by Stern. So....

#19189 2 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

Kodak and Polaroid probably said the same thing.

Lol. Give me a break.

#19319 2 years ago

Stern is not going to re-skin old designs to elate 14 people.

#19379 2 years ago

I’d never bet against mnpinball on Stern releases.

#19414 2 years ago
Quoted from onemilemore:

Educate me please, as I'm not a Godzilla person: Is the Toho stuff everyone seems to think is the license serious or campy? My biggest issue with Elwin pins has been the heavy tone - I prefer more upbeat, humurous or goofy themes for home use, so I haven't snagged an Elwin even though they shoot like butter. If Toho Godzilla has some of that campiness to it, though, I might be interested.

Well, it’s campy in how serious they are presented.

#19417 2 years ago

Rush is a really interesting band. Those that love them REALLY love them. Like won’t listen to anything else and drive a van with their logo painted on the side love them. Some people hate them with a passion. The band members themselves are/were MENSA level dudes that were really into technical proficiency and Dungeons & Dragons and shit.

What I like of theirs I think is really good. But I don’t have use for any deep cut stuff from them. I could probably swing through iTunes and find about 10 songs that wouldn’t drive me nuts on a good Borg/Lyman machine.

EDIT: Eh, maybe not. More like 5 or so songs that I really like. Then, uh, cupboard’s kinda dry, buddy.

#19424 2 years ago

They need to ditch all other plans and make an Ozzy pin if they want to do another rock pin. I’d be down with a Bark at the Moon edition.

#19463 2 years ago

The rumor is that Steve is out at Stern and is headed to JJP imminently. I have opinions as to the fit of the man and the company, but shall keep them to myself as less than constructive.

**I am only relaying rumor, and have no personal knowledge of its veracity.

I personally welcome a price increase, if it is paying for an awesome feature and BOM increase on Godzilla.

Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

Who is saying the next game will be a $500 increase? Are distributors saying this? I've enquired about (rumored) Godzilla and was not advised it will be more expensive than Mando.

Distros won’t know until the game is announced to them formally.

#19705 2 years ago
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

If that's the case, where are the increase rumors coming from? In my opinion Stern "needs" to keep that Pro price under 6K to still be an attractive entry level price. "The Pin" isn't gonna cut it lol.

The Pro won’t have the mech, thus price won’t increase most likely.

#19710 2 years ago
Quoted from RC_like_the_cola:

I guess I'm not up to speed on Godzilla rumors. So, there is supposed to be super cool mech in the premium/le that will increase them from 7700 to around 8200?

There isn't any specific rumor, other than it might have a higher BOM for a cool feature that Keith wanted. The LE/Premium package always includes mechs and features that aren't on the pro. As such, if there was one particular mech that increases the BOM on the LE/Premium package, it wouldn't be carried on the pro BOM. Or they could go the Elvira HOH route and offer no pro.

I don't have ANY idea if any of this is even remotely true.

-11
#19715 2 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

Damn dude lol. There's been price increases by Stern for literally years and it hasn't resulted in more features. Actually there's been cuts in features and hardware designs to save on costs. Everything from the new head design, lock down bar removal for brackets, plastic versus metal leg protectors, removal of the head lock mech for bolts, cheaper coil stops, and hell even the entire Spike 2 system have been designed to save on costs. Have any of those changes resulted in more hardware features? No, just more money for Stern. NIB prices were already insane a few years back and are in crazy town territory now.

Your best buddy Huckster Jack taught Gary all about price increases and milking the consumer. Stick it up your butt.

#19722 2 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

I see we have another two people blaming JJP for Stern raising prices...my goodness lol. This is Stern's choice to raise prices, try holding them accountable for once and what they are putting in their games (or lack of). Instead of blaming JJP ask yourself why Stern isn't putting more into their games with each price increase and overall increasing value. Maybe don't do that though and just be happy for paying $1k per orbit and ramp, if it's fun who cares what the price is!

For the life of me I don't understand why you visit threads other than the Huckster Jack threads. Are there not enough people in them to play with?

#19747 2 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

You don't like any criticism directed at Stern and then lash out.

Project much, Ms. Guarnieri? You can't handle the thought that someone could possibly like something in an order of magnitude that is less than tenfold of their love for fucking Dialed In. Hark! A pin other than a JJP machine is being discussed somewhere! To the Jackcave, Panzer!

#19769 2 years ago

Has anybody priced a new fence lately? Up 40%. A new home build? Holy shit is wood and other materials expensive. Knickknacks and manufactured parts that need a ride on a slow boat? Price hike due to logjams in canals, COVID labor shortages on the seas and on the docks, and general fuckery all around right now. Priced a used auto lately? Unobtanium. Everything is expensive.

But everyone make sure to ignore those facts and act REAL astonished when Stern adjusts their prices in line with any other inflation on any other manufactured item.

Insert "Yeah, but" argument re: prices you already didn't like below:

#19772 2 years ago
Quoted from palmab03:

Lumber back to 2018 prices. I don't think Sterns prices are going to go back down.

And the other items? Stern doesn't make an All Lumber version to justify hanging that hat on that hook, exactly.

Look. all I'm saying is that yes, shit is expensive. Everything is more expensive now. Them's the times. We just yelling at clouds in here now?

#19773 2 years ago
Quoted from RobT:

Yeah, I don't see anyone saying that they are surprised by a price increase from Stern.
Pissed off about it? Yep. But ain't nothing going to change anytime soon.

Astonished is what I said, and tomayto/tomahto. Amazed and bewildered and beset by the utter gall of Stern raising prices.

#19777 2 years ago

I'd also like to point out that all of this fervor is based on the one guy that everybody hates, everybody says is full of shit, and everybody discourages anyone from listening to around here. So, why take his work for it as concrete?

#19874 2 years ago

The most incredible neon ever. Is it possible to get another made? (maybe a Pinside members only exclusive).

It's a one-off for sure. He said he wouldn't do it again, but I don't know.

...and yeah, it wasn't cheap. It's more than 5 feet long.

#19971 2 years ago
Quoted from PilotPinball:

That's a bit big. I'd be looking for the 3 foot version. I'd also change the city as I used to live in Kansai, Japan. Thanks!

Making it smaller and animated would be virtually impossible, I would almost guarantee. He told me he broke a ton of glass trying to bend the scales on his back and some of the really intricately interlaced glass on this thing. Smaller would only be harder. Look at this spiderweb:

Teaser maybe today. With it being Labor Day weekend, timing makes more sense next Friday. The usual unveil is teaser end of week with a distribution conference call on Monday, then release on Tuesday.

#20507 2 years ago

Nothing on their Youtube page yet, and they haven't mapped /Godzilla/ on their website so far.

The wait continues.

#20575 2 years ago
Quoted from Da-Shaker:

So is it Godzilla?

Yes

#20587 2 years ago

I am baffled by the prevalence of opinion that Back to the Future is a more profitable license for a pinball machine than Godzilla. A good-but-not-great 80’s movie that is far from the purchasing public’s consciousness vs. a monster movie franchise with three American releases in the past five years and literally toys on Wal-Mart shelves right now. And that leaves nothing to say about the apples vs apples comparisons of legacy and cult status of each respective franchise.

Either way, it is Godzilla, and I have never seen Stern more sure of what they have than they are with this title. They are letting operators buy 3 and are pumping out location games first like they have never offered to do before.

#20590 2 years ago
Quoted from SkillShot:

Many consider BTTF a perfect movie. IMO, Godzilla doesn’t even come close to BTTF as far as a wanted theme. Hope both are made and deliver to fans of the franchises.

I hope you get BTTF. I fear for the marketability of that license beyond the 40-50 people here that are so enamored with the thought, but I don’t know a thing about such potential. In my opinion there are far better 80s movie licenses for properties that have carried much more general popularity into the 2020s: Ferris Butler’s Day Off, E.T., and Goonies come to mind top of head.

But I do think that Godzilla will prove to be a wildly popular license. I just don’t think there is any objective truth to the belief that a random family walking by a row of operated games will be drawn to a Back to the Future title with anywhere near the frequency of Godzilla. I mean, screeching Kaiju and mass destruction vs. Delorean and MJF likeness. Come on.

#20593 2 years ago
Quoted from Ty-Arnold:

Is it just rumors, or is next title 100% going to be released on Tuesday?

Listen fellas, I’m no stranger to the cinephile, uber dork , and geekdom culture. I’ve been a member of the 501st since 2007 and I’ve been to every con and comic show and cosplay event there is and you can name. I know dudes that go to LebowskiFest, which is an annual event. I’ve been on RPF for 15 years. All that said, I think I have my finger
on the pulse of pop culture and what licenses do and do not move the needle for large numbers of people.

That is not to say that there isn’t a loyal following to a particular movie. That isn’t to say that replica cars from certain movies and shows aren’t highly prized and collectible and outlandishly priced. All very true. But BTTF is not, on the grand scale of pop culture fandoms, anywhere near the behemoth some here will have us believe. It isn’t close to Indiana Jones, for example - a license having produced two machines.

And give me a break on certain items being produced for BTTF or a gathering of celebs at a con. Firefly gets that same treatment and was a tiny property. Godzilla has had posters and figures and merch released on Mondo literally in the last week that sold out in seconds. You don’t dig Godzilla. Cool. But to suggest it’s a niche or “left field” license is absurd. It’s massive and ubiquitous and global - a perfect international recipe. I’m not in any way suggesting I don’t like BTTF (the sequels blow, but I digress). But I am saying that it’s just not a heavy-hitter property and there is no comparison here between the two potential licenses. Wanna know how I know? Gary licensed Godzilla and gave it to his MVP and is pumping the hell out of it behind the scenes to the distros.

#20605 2 years ago
Quoted from BasementFacts:

Worldwide popularity of a franchise is less relevant in the context of pinball.

That’s fundamentally untrue. Why do you think AC/DC was chosen before all the other bands that Stern produced? The first run of pros go onto shipping containers to Europe and Australia. The worldwide market is 100% relevant. A license that leaves Europeans and Australians (in particular) scratching their heads is a non-starter. Hell, Munsters was a questionable choice in that department.

#20610 2 years ago
Quoted from screaminr:

And no one over here is scratching their heads about Back to the Future

Two different conversations. The point to which I was responding here was the assertion that Stern doesn’t consider global interest for licenses. I wasn’t weighing BTTF vs Godzilla in Oz. I have no clue.

#20626 2 years ago

JJP with their one game per 18 months production capability, biodegradable playfields, and up-to-the-minute razor’s edge licenses like Guns N Roses and Toy Story? Stern needs worry about them? Please.

#20630 2 years ago
Quoted from GravitaR:

Stern is only upping the allocations to push out and beta test the new Stern Insider Connected system.

Why wouldn’t they be putting equal effort into pushing the standalone system to connect to the other Spike 2 games that Ops already bought and are far more likely to buy en masse? Nobody is buying multiple new pins for location because of the Connected system.

#20636 2 years ago

Rush is rumored to be a boutique run. That would make more sense.

#20638 2 years ago
Quoted from beelzeboob:

I believe mnpinball said it would be a full-featured game. I don't remember the last time that guy was wrong.

I missed that. If he said it, it is true.

#20651 2 years ago

Steve gets a bad rap starting with Star Wars, and it was undeserved on that one. That machine is fun as hell. Where he really seems to have started to slip was on BKSOR. It just didn’t work and it really exposed how far the pin world had passed him by. The avalanche of opinion was off and running by that point and it swept LZ up into its wake. I think LZ is a good, but nothing special game if it was judged standing purely on its own. But when you know it’s a SR game, you look at it sideways and wonder why it’s not Star Trek or Spider-Man good.

#20653 2 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

Cutting the designed magnet toy from a game FEATURING the FORCE was ridiculous. Ritchie was constrained by BOM on Star Wars, and it showed. We have the original design showing where he wanted to go before the magnet was cut.

Yeah, it could have been a great game had Gary not forced the BOM cuts at the time. But as far as the design itself and layout, the game shoots well and is fun and fast.

#20671 2 years ago
Quoted from Huggers:

Trouble is mate, earlier you suggested Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a bigger license. Which makes me think you might not quite have your finger on the pulse like you suggest.

Eh. That’s my opinion. But I concede they are close comparisons in the pop culture zeitgeist. If you wanted to argue that BTTF sells more than Ferris, I wouldn’t argue that point too much. They’ve already made one BTTF pin, so you have evidence in the past that it was true. I personally wouldn’t pick either for a pin license today. But I would make a Goonies pin and expect it to sell all day. I stand by that. I’ve heard clamoring for Goonies in this hobby for 20 years.

#20673 2 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

I thought Gary/Stern licensed it to screw over Spooky? Wasn't that the origin story?

Gary told Jody to go get the Godzilla license because it’s a huge get. Jody made a big scene of cockblocking Charlie (according to Charlie, who I have never heard any reason to think exaggerated or misrepresented the events). Yes, Charlie got screwed out of Godzilla. But Gary isn’t in the business of being petty on licenses. It’s a huge property and he wanted it. Jody was just a prick and crashed Charlie’s meeting with Toho.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have been buying and trading and flipping machines since 2004/05, and the conversations have literally never changed. The prices of NIB Sterns and secondary market prices have been lamented and debated and cursed and lambasted for 20 years. Anyone around in the hobby back then will remember the constant insistence that JUDGE DREDD IS NOT A $1000 MACHINE!!. TAF hit $3500 and everyone was going to quit the hobby. LOTR LE NIB price was the apocalypse. TAF hit $5000 and the sky was falling. AC/DC LE NIB and secondary prices was the bubble that would end it all. TZ IS NOT A $6,000 GAME!!!! JJP took preorders for WOZ and the price was enough to send everyone out of the hobby forever. Avengers proved that the NIB LE buyers were submarined forever and would end the "buy before you play" practice. MM hit $10K then $12K and nobody would ever be able to afford this hobby anymore. Stern raised prices to be competitive with JJP and it would send Gary to the soup line...

It's the same conversation year after year after year. But I'll tell you that this hobby and this place are more chock full of buyers and players and people in the hobby than anytime in the 20 year history I have in it. the only difference is that the barn finds are found and the great deals on slightly broken machines are bought and repaired.

#21269 2 years ago

Word is that the assets on the screen will be very much like JP, in that they didn't pay a bunch of licensing for clips and video. It'll be animated in house. And that decision was made to put max BOM on the playfield. Rumor of lots of metal, ala AIQ, and a killer mech.

Distros get the info tomorrow and then it’s off to the races. This is going to be a bloodbath.

Quoted from PinMonk:

Disney bought Marvel in 2009. Kinda weird that they would "let them enjoy" a competitor's park down the road (Universal) with a property that isn't Disney's as thanks for signing a contract with Disney/Marvel.

Universal Studios holds rights to Marvel and has a bunch of Marvel rides and character stuff in their park.

Quoted from PinMonk:

I've been there. I get that. Green goblin terrified my daughter in the park parade when we went a long time ago, and the Spiderman ride freaked out my son, who was too young for it at the time (I discovered mid-ride).
Just seems weird that Disney would say, "thanks for making this deal, now go enjoy our competitor's park."

Seems weird to bring a team out to sign a dead for a Marvel license at a Mickey Mouse park, too. *shrug*

Quoted from WizardsCastle:

Dream themes, and wizard modes:
- Snatch (Do you know what Nemesis means?)
- Wu-Tang Clan (Enta the 36 Chambers)
- Breaking Bad (I am the one who knocks)

Snatch is an original idea that you could do so many great things with. Bullet Tooth Tony. One Punch Mickey. Boris the Bullet Dodger. Hare coursing. All. Bets. Are. Off.

Man, I’m convinced. Let’s do this.
