If there is a Wonder Woman pinball machine I am so in for my first NIB. It is crushing at the box office domestically and internationally, so would be a smart choice. (mind you, that's what I said about Jurassic World, and that has yet to result in a pin)

#787 6 years ago

Never Weird Al. While he has been given so many graces from record companies for his parodies, they don't get much commercialization outside of the normal streams since the licensing would be a mess.

Thus making Wierd Al the perfect homebrew pinball machine project choice...

Was really hoping for GotG or Jurassic World at this point.

Quoted from Herm:

Guardians of the galaxy would be cool but the music licensing might be expensive.

The songs are all from the 1970s or so. The licensing is probably not too crippling. Those that are still alive, and the estates of the others, probably don't demand the same coin as a contemporary pop star. And you could probably get away with skipping some, like Bowie and Jackson 5

I'm continually shocked pinball manufacturers aren't working with videogame licenses.
Pokémon, Metroid, Resident Evil, Half Life, Halo, Mario Bros, Sonic The Hedgehog, etc etc etc.
So many great titles that are known for big action, have a huge built-in fanbase, and so many assets to work with creatively.

From the 80s you had stabs at it with Q*Bert, Baby Pac, Mr. and Mrs Pacman, Joust. 90s Gottlieb gave us SFII and 2 Mario games. (Rollercoaster Tycoon counts, I guess)
But here we are with pins based off 50-60 year old TV shows and bands doing their long retirements. I love the new titles, but the people that grew up on home video games are now the ones with the careers and midlife crises!

I've seen a lot of griping in forums where people are like "NEW RESIDENT EVIL GAME???" and it's a thread lamenting that the new machine is a Biohazard pachinko from Japan. The pachinko/pachislo industry has done a decent job in tapping the video game world. I think other popular ones were Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill.

They're going to copy the Data East dinosaur head that eats the ball but will innovate with a playfield toy that poops it out the other end.

Quoted from DS_Nadine:

Jurrassic XXX wourd be "meh".

Stern hasn't made a pornographic pin since Playboy in 2002 so I doubt they'd re-enter that market with sexy dinosaurs.

Quoted from Raegor:

I'd love Grease, been saying that forever.

I re-watched it recently and couldn't get over how poorly it aged. It's pretty rapey. I love musicals but the sun is setting on that one.
On that note, they could totally get away with a Hamilton themed pin.

Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

and in Pinball it applies to shots that are repeatable. When hit enough, a high score will result or a match win. I hate all casual references to or uses of the term.

If you'll all permit the quick tangent, when I joined the local league they asked how they can get more women to attend. My first response was to stop saying stuff like "raping the spinner" and "raping the backbox for parts".

#4074 4 years ago

If they do Jurassic World I hope they do a giant sculpt like Godzilla

#4117 4 years ago

It did! It's only correlation but I haven't heard local people say that in 2 years, and as well the number of women competing is way up.

Pokémon would be a great theme, and a safe way to diversify offerings away from Stern's focus on 40-something guys. Of course they would have to offer a version of the code for redemption arcades...

#5711 4 years ago
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

Serious question, when was the last time a commercial machine was launched based off of Japanese Intellectual property. I know Capcom made games in the 90s alongside Sega, but I can't think of any Japanes IP past Godzilla, and that machine was licensed off of the American "film".

Great question. Besides Godzilla, you have to go back to Street Fighter II to find a game based off a Japanese IP.
Before that, Super Mario Bros & Mushroom World.

Absolutely bonkers to think that no one has done a proper VIDEO GAME-based release, let alone a game based off any number of the amazing IP that came out of Japan (Metroid, Pokémon, etc)

To go older, the only Japanese IPs I can think that were made into pinball machines are Mr. & Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pacman, and Space Invaders

Bit more surprised about Spiderman Vault Premium still kicking around.

If Marco just acquired this stock, I sure hope they didn't pay full price for the Transformers and WWE LEs.
But also it just looks better for them to have a wider stock? Maybe they some around so s flashier inventory for the pinball newcomers with money to burn.

#6574 4 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

Gomez isn't stupid. He's seen the prices going crazy over time, and that pin is his baby, so an enhanced Spike LotR vault would be a great success

LOTR would be Stern's chance to do something like a Special Edition LE Vault, and people would buy it.

#6578 4 years ago
Quoted from cantbfrank:

Also look at the price drop of NIB pins that are being sold a few months after being bought. You are seeing $500-$1000 depreciation on almost new stern pins. Why buy new when you can buy at a discount a few months later.

this has been said a million times before but if you're buying a pinball machine and expecting it's price retention to be different than driving a new car off the lot, you're crazy.

Also Stern doesn't give a shit about secondary markets, outside the market research for their VEs

I do however think that they should wait like 10 years to do this shit... so it’s 2020 and anything prior to 2010 is game. Vault to me has the meaning of dragging something out of the archives on a new limited basis.

I was unaware of this casting choice and now I'm delighted.
Venom would make an excellent pin. (well, provided the sequel does good)

Not that a modified/updated quicksilver is a bad thing, beatles is super fun it’s the stupid price that killed beatles off. An updated quicksilver with a more reasonable price and Queen will probably sell much better than the bonkers beatles pricing model.

This is my thinking, too. I think Beatles is a great game, just priced stupidly. If they do the QS retheme and have Pro pricing I think it'd be great. (Can Stern learn from the problems of B66 SLE and Beatles Diamond? We'll see)
Yes, some people want Theme X as a cornerstone title, but the same was/is true for Beatles. BUT, I am actually excited at the idea of more classic layouts returning

#8991 3 years ago
Quoted from frankmac:

It could be bill and Ted on a Iron Man reskin. I think Deadflip was speaking on this at one point.

If they do a re-skin I still think TWD would be the best choice. It's an incredible game, but redo it with a family-friendly theme and an LCD screen and it'd sell well too.

it's important for us to remind Stern that Bad Cats II is just sitting there, ready to make them millions...

I dunno, we're in a pandemic still and demand seems to be high for home entertainment. Stern could easily just wait until 2021 for their next machine and keep producing AIQ, TMNT, ST, JP, EHOH, and the Star Wars comic edition for a few months. That's a pretty great lineup of 6 machines and themes to rest one's laurels on for a tiny bit.

#13490 3 years ago

My god man do you not understand how much of an impact canning an actor mid-run has? This wasn't some decision taken lightly, your summary is wrong, and we don't need politics OR lying in this thread. This thread is about making people angry by suggesting that we make pins about cheesy 40 year old franchises we half-remember. Now if you'll excuse me it's time to give a passionate defense about why the time is right for a Cannonball Run pinball machine featuring a holographic Burt Reynolds

#13491 3 years ago

#13497 3 years ago

here's a thought: pick a theme that would best penetrate a robust international market. Like, a theme that isn't focused on primarily selling pins to Americans. So, no 20th century American pop films films or boomer/genx rock bands.

League Of Legends
Super Mario
World Of Warcraft
(so many videogame themes)
BTS (biggest popstars on the globe)
Jackie Chan (a career retrospective?)

like, just imagine if South Korea or India developed an affection for pinball equivalent to that of American consumers? Would revolutionize things.

Well...Wood got so pissed off the he kicked over a rack of moleskin notebooks and stormed out the front door leaving the cocaine twins behind. Then Chuck Close came in on his wheelchair and was rip shit he couldn’t traverse the store due to the moleskin mess. True story. The end. ( Oh, and Elijah Wood was great in the MANIAC remake )

Quoted from PinMonk:

JJP will not stay limited to just a main and a smaller sub line forever. Moving the whole operation to the new factory and then the pandemic slowed down the transition, but I would not be surprised to see them with 2 full-scale lines up and cranking out pins simultaneously within the next year.

That's the dream, really. I would love it if the market and manufacturers could sustain an annual output of 3 Sterns, a JJP, a CGC remake, a Spooky, and an AP.
I think JJP will eventually get to the one per year rate.
Spooky is one every 1.5 years and I don't see that shifting because they're cautious with growth.
AP is about the same, maybe every 2 years?
CGC, I've ranted about before, but I hope they work up to one remake a year and keep pumping MMR games out as along as the market can absorb them.

But since this is my "dream", that also means the market stays hot enough to sustain this and more and more places adopt pins / the hobby grows further

LOL you're on a board where we obsessively discuss the latest high priced comic book toys. Save us your cultural purity!

Yeah like we all know Tron would sell like crazy if it came back, ESPECIALLY with an LCD screen, but I look at what's being manufactured by Stern right now and ask myself why they would bother at this point?
Their games are HITS. They can't keep up with demand. They dropped a cornerstore release this year because sales are so good. Deadpool! Godzilla! AIQ! Jurassic Park! etc some of the best pinballs ever made are being made NOW.

So if I was Stern I'd keep the vault cards close to my chest and wait for the next WWE flop to chum the waters.

(Ghostbusters would also sell like crazy with an LCD screen, who are we kidding. But my point stands that they just don't have the ability to keep up with the demand for their incredible current games)

Or how about particle man vs triangle man?

We all know how that ends...

#26884 1 year ago

I'm sure Keaton would love to get involved in a Beetlejuice pin, too.

#26922 1 year ago
Quoted from benheck:

Didn't see original until my 30s. Didn't get it. It seemed like The Matrix but done really poorly.

I actually liked the new one more because the plot (while generic boilerplate father son stuff) was more solid.

Tron is a great example of aesthetic dominance. Almost no one talks about how amazing the acting writer direction of Tron movies are.
But holy shit are the games amazing. The aesthetic was so novel and well done that it just translated into other (I would argue more appropriate) mediums so well.
Even the Intellivision games were great.

Seriously. The people who keep saying this aren't paying attention. The game is coming. It will have probably everyone but maybe Crispin Glover. Their likeness, their movie scenes, their voices.

I want nothing more than a pin dedicated to Sir Crispin Hellion Glover.

Good to hear , but I don't consider Fury Road as a Mad Max movie , hopefully the new one being filmed goes back to it's roots .

blasphemy, but I'll let it slide considering you're from Australia... BUT NEXT TIME....

Quoted from PinStalker:

The real problem is Stern being so lazy and only doing two games a year. They need to get back to four and then people will start getting the themes they want.
Fewer games with much higher prices...... that's the Disney-Boy way.

sorry, Stern couldn't hear your advice over the sound of all those Foo Fighters, Godzillas, Deadpools, and Jurassic Parks flying out the door at record speed

#37436 10 months ago
Quoted from John_I:

If they do another Simpsons, it should be Treehouse of Horrors. Better yet, just do Futurama already (code name BTTF).
Venom is next. Basically an auto pass for me unless the greatest game ever.

The Futurama voice actors would produce some of the best pinball callouts ever

Quoted from PanzerKraken:

The idea that they just bought a license and sat on it to let it lapse just cause their designers were like "nah", is silly. There is clearly far more to that story.

You option licenses, I.e. you basically pay to reserve them. It happens all the time with hot books, but most dont get turned into movies or shows, though the author still gets a bit of money for the optioning.
Only when the decision to move to Production is the option activated and that's when the big money is spent.

Quoted from Prince66cali:

Here s the thing, Stern makes a good product but they have to stop the price increases and keep supply realistic. During the pandemic, they had shortages and demand doubled. Now supply is high and demand is constant. Just a tip.

On the topic of price, I hate the increases too but if you charts NIB Pro prices against inflation the prices have been reliably consistent. That's just the market Stern exists in, and are not really them conspiring to extract extra profit. That's what LEs and SLEs are for.

Yeah, now he added Journey, Beastie Boys and Beetlejuice.

This is a handy way to keep track of the speculation and rumours, thank you.
Only a few IPs that I find truly annoying and so many titles I love where even if only a third of these got made it would be wonderful.

Quoted from TeddyG:

Here's the referenced comments from George last year:

Are there any talks / deep dives on the development of Stern's architecture? I love that kind of engineering and iterative design and consideration of future and backwards compatibility.
While I was typing this George Gomez in the video says "those are not sexy decisions, no one wants to focus on them" and I'm like I DOOOOOOOO

Quoted from GoneFishinLvMsg:

Doubt there's enough mass appeal for a Slayer. How about Beavis and Butthead
It could have all kinds of 80s heavy metal such as Slayer plus stuff like Beastie Boys and it would be funny as hell.

B&BH would be a killer theme. You could license a tonne of great 90s hard rock and metal for it. Do it up like a Tiny Hawk game with a deep and extensive soundtrack.
King of the Hill would also be a fun theme, and I don't think Barry O's pin even touches on propane and propane accessories.

#46749 7 days ago
Quoted from MacGruber:

I also heard Gremlins! Meantime, Stern managed to loose both BTTF and Potter. That alone is indefensible. Get better.

When the creator of an IP gets known as a holocaust denier it's probably best to move forward to safer properties. Similar issues for people who pre-ordered a Cybertruck 5 years ago, they didn't know what they were getting into with the CEO and might not want that baggage.
It's just good business sense imho.

#46754 7 days ago
Quoted from vikeking27:

Or, realistically, most average people who aren't chronically online or 'plugged-in' - live life and buy products that appeal to them, can separate the art from the artist, all that stuff. The average person couldn't give two shits less what Elon Musk says or does if they want a Cybertruck. Same goes with pretty much anything - people still buy Gillette razors and Bud Light.

While you're correct that most people aren't aware of this stuff, you're comparing your examples against things that have real world consequences: violation of laws in Germany, and unsafe vehicles that require a recall. You can't compare that against 2 invented moral panics that only existed in a bubble of terminally online people.
Companies want the best return for their investment, and that will always involve balancing risks.

#46757 7 days ago
Quoted from Slappywhite2001:

It could even be based on "The Wizarding World," not specifically reference anything from the books or movies, but be chock full of homage and lore. That's basically what the recent, massively successful video game did.

While it would be super cool to take an IP and essentially produce original content for it in the form a pinball machine, I can't imagine that being granted. I think of similarly sized IPs like Star Wars and Mario Bros that have multiple spinoffs and amusement park attractions as comparatively sized, but I'd guess the creative thrust would have to come from the rights-holders alone.
I guess another example would be a Marvel comic book pin that had an original storyline.

Quoted from littlecammi:

Not sure if I heard this from Knapp Arcade or not, but Stern may have some new vaults that are mashups of previous pins.
First one out may be The Walking Dead-pool, to be followed by Iron Man-dalorian.

If there is any truth to those rumours I'm draining this thread and never coming back because obviously my knowledge of how licensing works is entirely wrong
