Quoted from PinMonk:

The upside is that if you get a Japan reimport, it's PRISTENE. It will have barely got played, ever.
If you were in Shinjuku, if you wandered over to Kabuki-cho, you probably saw a bunch of pachinko, though. If pinball was actually a gambling device that dispensed prizes like pachinko, it'd be more popular - they are a nation of gamblers.
We often stay at the Shinjuku Prince right next to the JR line. There are a TON of great little mom and pop hole-in-the wall restaurants in those Kabuki-cho back alleys next to it.

Went to "Kabukitcho Tower" and not even in all 3 floors filled with Pachinko there wasn’t a single Pinball machine down there (Saw Mission Impossible in The 109 Cinemas up there), but Vic… just 2 Pinballs literally in total for the whole trip that’s too low for a place like Akihabara(that GIGO red building was SEGA before if I’m not mistaken, zero Pinballs there either), then in Osaka I went to Nipponbashi(District) and… zero Pinballs.

Well if you are like me, and are into gentlemanly pursuits, you will have seen the youtube videos of people going to the weird vending machines, which include almost everything and... used underwear.

Monthly reminder, next Stern Cornerstone pin is due out on or about 18 May. Math and logic above. Top rumors include John Wick, Pokemon, X-Men97, He-Man, and Indiana Jones.

Strong pass on all of those themes. Probably a good thing as I really shouldn't be buying any more pins due to space and wallet constraints.

Pokemon, though... I'd be hard pressed to even play something that lame in an arcade. Never realized there were so many teenaged girls on this forum.

I posted a couple of ideas on here already, but here it is again.

1) I would be in for a Pink Floyd the second they announce it, but this is unlikely to happen because Roger Waters is a fruitcake.

2) Classic 80's comedy movies. National Lampoons, Caddyshack, The Blues Brothers, etc.

3) Some kind of music-centric pin that isn't focused exclusively on one band. Wayne's World or School of Rock for example.

Reality check: We’re talking about the marketability of pinball in a country that buys soiled underwear out of gumball machines.

Reality check: most pinball collectors look like guys that would buy that

Girls? Girls would actually be the last people to mess with Pokemon. It's primarily a boy thing (actually young man) and it's about trading cards or the video games. In the past, Millennials are familiar with it based on the 90's cartoon.

Quick info - statistically most Pokemon players & collectors are over the age of 18 per Nintendo's statistics.

I'm not saying it's not weird and I don't play Pokemon myself anymore, but it's the stats. I would play a pinball if they released it though.

My assumption is that it would be a pinball that sold poorly HUO, but did VERY well on location. It'd be one of the last pins standing on location.

My 17 year old daughter played some Pokeman game for hours on her Nintendo Switch when she was over here last weekend. It looked really stupid. I have run into a grown-ass man, working in a steel mill no less, who travels all over the country to play in Pokeman tournaments. I'll play a Pokeman pinball if forced (i.e. for a tournament).

Pokemon is huge with girls. The whole thing is about cuteAF animals you take care of. That's why it's literally the most valuable IP of all time. Battling, Tending, Befriending, Adventure, Trading... it hits everywhere.

"video games are dumb and for boys" is weird 90s talk.

Pokemon is over 25 years old Mr. Manly Man

#46218 71 days ago
Quoted from Haymaker:

I think its just pointing out that Pokemon is an absolutely massive license with worldwide appeal. Do I think a Pokemon game would suddenly make pinball huge in Japan? No. Its huge in other countries where pinball is popular though. Like Huge huge. I don't understand these guys who think just because its a theme they don't like, it isn't a massive phenomenon that tons of other people do. Yes, even to people in the pinball buying demographic. The younger end of that demographic but probably also the fastest growing demographic.

Yeah, this was the point of my post, not debating whether Japan will see an influx of pinball machines because of a possibility of a Pokemon pinball being released.

a) the trip showed me how popular the Pokemon franchise still is (the huge Pokemon themed stores were packed with Westerners)
b) I am curious to see if Pokemon pinball machines turn up in more locations (in the U.S, Europe and Australia)
c) I think it will be a positive for pinball in aiming for a bit younger market vs putting out another old band title like Pink Floyd.

I will concede my wording came off too harsh and I misrepresented the point I was trying to make when I said, "Girls would actually be the last people to mess with Pokémon." When that is not the case today, nor what I was trying to convey. My point to the original poster, was Pokémon is not some simple "teenage girl thing".

Pokémon is for everyone, and statistically the 18+ crowd, per Nintendo. Which a lot of people don't really think when they think Pokémon. They think 10-17 year olds...or teenagers.

I don't know where you got the idea I was saying "video games are dumb and for boys". All I have are daughters and they play video games with me DAILY, but I'm not getting into that with you.

I obviously know everyone plays Pokémon at this point, but when Pokémon first released in the 90's it did not start with everyone interested.

Conclusion: This theme would shock people how well it does on location due to its current popularity across ages, demographics, etc.

#46220 71 days ago

As much as I've been pulling for an MOTU pin, I'd have to think its either John Wick or X-Men '97 based on all the smoke around here recently.

gotcha. we agree. Pokemon would kill it on location especially if all the machines ended up in Pokemon Go and I'd happily take the LE spot of some guy who is too cool to see themselves in the property.

99.99% of teenage girls are not and never will be interested in pinball.

Sure you have seen one play a pinball one time, probably because everything else in the house was boring and they were waiting for their phone to charge.

You can put Pokemons all over one and a teenage girl will play it at the bowling alley while she waits for everyone to finish their game. But she is not going to catch the bus back the next day to play again.

Putting a theme on something doesn't change the demographic that pinball is for grey old men, and that's most of us and that is not a bad thing.

Just play the games and give up trying to change the world

Bring on the 80s themes

Next time you go to your local pinball location I'd challenge you to take an objective look at who is there. What do you think the average age of an attendee of your local pinball league or get together is? I understand pinside skews middle age wealthy white guy, but who is on the pins at your local brewcade that an operator would want to attract?

I am 37 years old. Are most of the folks about my age, slightly younger, or older. Yes, Pokemon appeals to kids, but it has appealed to kids now since about 1996. My kids love the card games. I just missed the Pokemon craze, but there are anime fans, video game fans, fitness fans (somehow), and card game fans all into Pokemon. Anyone who has been 8 years old since about 1996 has been exposed to the franchise. Heck, my exposure was through super smash brothers. Just as Star Wars has had something in theaters or on TV since 1977, Pokeomon has been constant since 1996 or so.

Quoted from GoneFishinLvMsg:

3) Some kind of music-centric pin that isn't focused exclusively on one band. Wayne's World or School of Rock for example.

Remember what I was saying about your average league player? Pink Floyd released Dark side of the Moon 50 years ago. I'm 37... that came out more than 10 years before I was born. I like rock pins too, but the rock pins I like I like because my dad listened to the music when I was a kid. These movies you listed are all good, but all came out before I was born. I didn't see Caddyshack until last year when I sought it out. It has no more cultural relevancy to me (and most people at your pinball tournament) than The Princess and The Frog likey does to you.

With that said Caddyshack and Pink Floyd could make great pins, I'll acknowledge that, but the idea that movies and bands that were popular 40-50 years ago would make great pins and modern pins still in the cultural zietgiest could not is where we differ.

Literally every theme you mentioned is before my time excepting school of rock which I never actually watched.

In my experience the best themes tend to be ones that pull accross generations that have been culturally relevant for some time.

XMEN would appeal to many generations because your generation had the comic books, my generation had the Saturday Morning Cartoon and Fox Movies, and the current generation has XMEN 97.

Godzilla, Bond, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, BatMan, Star Trek all are great from a theming perspective because they have had shows/movies/media cross generations.

#46235 71 days ago

I hope Stern releases Pokememan and other themes like that for the younger generations. I need to spend less money on pinball and that would do it, for sure.

#46236 71 days ago

Pokemon is huge with everyone, not just boys and not just girls. I was just slightly too old when it first came out and I wasn't into it much. My younger brother was into it big time. As the years went on, I saw it continue to be big with the younger generation and older alike. Even people my age and older were into it after a while. I'm not some big pokemon stan, I played the classic gameboy games a little, but I was never a big fan. However, I guess I'm just not as out of touch as a lot of people here. Its HUGE. Do you see the prices people pay for some of the classic cards? Even the old games, which they made a ton of and are not considered rare at all, bring way better money than they should. Counterfeiters and scam artists alike work tirelessly to do black market pokemon stuff. Scalpers buy up all the stuff at the stores and resell before the general public can get to it. I mean, this stuff doesn't happen unless theres a gigtantic fanbase and people willing to spend money in said fanbase.

Sadly, I've lost faith in the pokemon rumor, I kind of don't think its happening, but if it does, it will be one of the biggest hits in a long time. Both at home and on location.

I agree with this one- I think it would give Stern a novel avenue to sell music by the song or by the album. Said it a page back but give a venue, steal the Stranger Things projector, and sell the content.

Collect the sound equipment, perform soundcheck, sell tickets, and start the show, encore multiball, mosh pit bumpers, stage dive ramps, better show you put on more points you earn, maybe completing all jackpots in the show modes boost merch scoop "sales"(scores). I think this could be a very lucrative pin for Stern,

Thinking something like an RCT2 + Stranger Things Projector, maybe throw in a bit of GNR's ideas.

EDIT: Think it goes without saying that you would need a very strong layout to sell as you wouldn't necessarily have the theme printing money.

If Stern can somehow play into the collector part of it, which is largely what Pokemon is more than whatever is going on in videogames and tv, then it could do well. I'm not sure if they have the ability to pull that part off. Focusing too much on the tv show I think could make it go the way of Toy Story.

Pokemon I think would at least sell well, not so sure it's a guaranteed big hit.

I would too. I find it funny that the same people clamoring for cartoons from their youth wonder why anyone would buy a pokemon pin. Exactly this. Just turned 39 myself. Like you, old/established enough to buy pinball, know pokemon well might even be a big fan, might have kids or family that also like it. Pretty simple recipe for huge success because theres a ton of people just like us in this hobby.

I can’t speak to your (or anyone else’s) experience but as someone that plays in pinball events this feels a bit out of date to me.

You are right saying that a low % of teenage girls are participating/interested… but there is also the same low % of teenage boys. Take that for what it is I guess.

In most tournaments around here and where I have played, the % of adult women participating is at least 25% of the field and more often higher (like 1/3 of the participants). So… your entire premise of ‘by men and for old men’ seems not only dated but outright stupid to me.
