Quoted from J85M:

I am surprised MMPR hasn’t popped up in pinball, licence has been going strong for 20+ years and would instantly pull kids in and their parents who grew up on its
Mortal Kombat is another theme that I think would translate well to pinball, combos = fatality inputs.
Can’t imagine either licence is too expensive either
.

The fact that it took me a bit to figure out what MMPR was or that there was only one or two good seasons and the rest are Australia's hot garbage make me think you are in a minority.

It was not banned in Canada and the last 20yrs it has continued to run as various Asian/Australian productions featuring some of their top talent (sarcasm). My kid watched some of the later garbage.

Um, I worked on a few seasons of the MMPR shot in New Zealand. Clearly you never saw Ninja Storm which captured the gestalt of young adulthood in a way that Bergman or Wells never could.

JMK do you ever post? Would be good to hear your thoughts on things or do you just follow a chosen few round Pinside like some voiceless figure in the shadows lol.

Damn, that was not true?

#22062 2 years ago
Quoted from pinballaddicted:

I have been hearing it for a while from our local Aussie pinball group. I believe the rumor to be solid as when you go to JJP site there are three games listed. Willy Wonker just went back on the line and I think Pirates is next. Site is ready to take orders once the announcement is made.
http://store.jerseyjackpinball.com/Games/
Navigation
Guns N' Roses™
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Pirates of the Caribbean
Back to the next Stern!

JJP is not planning on making more POTC. They are going to make more Wonkas. I heard it on good authority just yesterday. POTC is a wide body - that’s part of the issue.

I know this is a Stern thread but just sharing based on previous comments here as well as I know we all need to plan our future pinball funds accordingly.

Forgot that it was a wide body.

I agree with you… lots of games coming out, and most of them have extended waiting periods before you can get them. Managing your space and cash is a must!!

#22065 2 years ago
Quoted from NC_Pin:

They'd sell a year's worth of production of POTC's LE's at $11k.

no way a loaded widebody is sold at 11k. I would expect a special run at 14.5k.

and I would buy it.

#22066 2 years ago

I don’t believe rumor that JJP’s planning to rerun POTC. It would be a great thing to have them made and sold in quantity for $14k. I just don’t think JJP wants to rerun them nor have the parts laying around. If they did decide to run them in seriousness I wish they’d change the art and label them a different version.

My preferred rumor to come true would be for JJP to start up a second line that runs only wide bodies. That would be awesome. They could run finally run POTC & Hobbits. And then …. maybe Eric’s next game could be a widebody.

I believe their 2nd line is just now up and running and is going to make the Wonkas.

I’m bummed. Not interested in Wonka, but I’d buy a POTC. I’m also very intrigued with The Hobbit. Oh well.

Now….back to our regularly scheduled Stern programming. (Sidetrack diversions are sooooo difficult to avoid in many threads).

The westerners (were they all Americans? Some seemed European...) dialogue and acting was TERRIBLE. Truly awful.

That one cliffhanger on the tug of war was a bitch move, too. I think it was like 4am when I finished that episode, but I had to stay up and watch the first 10-15 minutes of the next episode because I wasn't going to sleep where they abruptly cut.

How were those characters different than others in the series in dialogue or acting?

Quoted from skink91:

It's Korean subbed in English, so you hear Korean the whole time, and yes, Korean cinema is prone to exaggerated acting (and the Korean actors do it, as expected), but when the English speaking characters come in, they are speaking English in the most exaggerated, stereotypical regional dialects possible. It's just BAD. And not just the WAY they're talking, but the stupid dialogue the writers imagined English speakers might say. The worst part of the whole series.

Did you watch it dubbed or subbed? If you watched it dubbed I can understand why it didn't stick out. But if it was subbed, for me at least, it was really intrusively bad once the VIPs showed up in Ep 7.

Just one example of the terrible English dialogue (not dubbed) between the oversexed gay southerner VIP and one of the Asian VIPs when one of the players is about to kill themselves and the southerner starts yelling at the player on the screen whose number is 69:

"What convinced you to bet on number 69?"
"Ohhh, ah, it's such a beautiful number...SIXTY-NINE!"

I mean...ugh. Just the flattest, worst stereotypical westerner dialogue ever.

I’m just not sure I get the offense taken as it was a caricature, just like many others in the film. Also that was a caricature that was supposed to outrage (which it rather obviously succeeded at).

#22092 2 years ago

You guys sound like you've never seen a Westerner in Asian cinema. Nothing new to see here. There is at least one campy white guy in every martial arts flick.
Hell, look at how the Titans in Attack on Titan are clearly just exaggerated Westerners.
We aren't super popular.

Me too. I would fold it up and store it 10 mo. a year and just pull it out for the holidays. The santa slide could be a great ramp and I would love a bumpus hound multiball with a turkey bash toy! Maybe a magnetic flagpole, a lamp that breaks and a scott fargus hurry up.

I’ve got a few episodes to go, so maybe I’ll enjoy how they end up. That room with the live models was cool - kind of an homage to Kubrick (Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut). All I know for sure is that the pickpocket girl is really cute.

The terrible quality of the dialogue of the westerners is what really got me. I get that the VIPs were painted in broad strokes, but they could have spent another 8 minutes writing better dialogue. It was just awful in general and really brought those sections of the show down.

Same. I can't believe that somehow because it's Netflix, people have become more accepting of dubs. I've always hated dubbing, at best it's barely passable but mostly it's awful.

I was an anime/Kung fu flick kid of the mid 90s.
I used to be all about subtitles but I'm at a point in my life now where being able to just listen, half pay attention and only look at the screen occasionally is perfect lol. Dubs are great for when you aren't fully committed to a show or movie...like when you are working on a pinball machine

I get that. The last episode of Only Murders in the Building I was going to watch while fulfilling pinmonk stuff and wouldn't you know it - the episode centered on a deaf person and almost the whole episode was subtitled! So, my plan went out the window.

But in general my subtitle consumption is so effortless I don't notice it sometimes. When the trailer came out for Squid Game, my son and I watched it and after it was over were discussing it and he was talking about the subtitles and I was like, "that wasn't subtitled" and then played it again and it was. I had just shifted into sub mode and consumed the content without even registering that's what was happening.
