Holy shit. I just had a memory of that radio shack arcade come back. I would have been very young (born in 78) but I now remember playing with one of them. I just did a wiki search, they were from ‘81-82. That box looks fairly decent too. Considering they’re going for $20-$40 on eBay, you did very well.

Quoted from BMore-Pinball:

Who here is old enough to have had the old metal Tonka trucks?[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

My mom has a favorite story she likes to tell about me. When I was 3 or 4 she made a deal with me that I could get one of those steel dump trucks if I used the bathroom consistently. Apparently i was difficult to potty train and had frequent accidents.

I did well, got the truck...and destroyed it within weeks. I loved taking apart toys to see how they worked. She thought the steel would be my match, proved her wrong. They were pissed at me and surprised that I was able to break it.

Quoted from jamesmc:

My neighbor Bobby had a grey ghost krate. They made them in 1971. This one was made in Dec 71 and those came with a disk brake that 1 month. So they are pretty rare. My wife bought me this for Christmas. I have a nos headlight for it. It even has a turn signal accessory nos. I have 1 mile on the new speedometer. Been trying to find Bobby on the internet to even things up.[quoted image]

I like the Godard print. Probably one of the best game room artist around.

When I was very young there was a thing I think was called lincoln logs. All made of wood, and painted. You built log cabins and stuff like that, and seems like the pieces that were flat and went on the roof were painted green.

One of my fondest memories of my grandparents was playing with these when I was young at their place. I just looked they still make ‘em after 100 years

I remember going to the convenience store in the 80’s and 90’s and ripping open random packs of trading cards to see what was inside. I grew up on a farm outside a small town, so the selection was crappy and always changing. It would have been impossible back then to collect a full set of anything and most of the cards probably ended up in my bicycle spokes. So I’ve been picking up random packs of cards every now and then. I think I might open a couple packs on my birthday each year. I never stole my parents vehicle, but I do remember taking my dads truck 4x4ing a couple times. He has an ‘86 F250 diesel, the truck was jacked up with locking hubs. I never got stuck, surprisingly, and since it was a farm truck it normally had a layer of mud on it.

Anyone that had a Walkman or made a mix tape will remember cassetts.

I remember making mixed tapes off of a dual cassette player like this. I’d wait for hours to get all the songs recorded from the radio, and then I would mix them from one deck to the other; making sure to put 2 second spaces between songs. At one point we had a cheap microphone and pretended to be radio DJ’s and introduced the songs on the mixed tape. But, alas, it is just a myth. Originally, NASA astronauts, like the Soviet cosmonauts, used pencils, according to NASA historians. In fact, NASA ordered 34 mechanical pencils from Houston's Tycam Engineering Manufacturing, Inc., in 1965. They paid $4,382.50 or $128.89 per pencil.
LTG : )

You are correct, but to add to this, it didn’t take nasa long to figure out the the tip of a pencil could break off and float around becoming a problem. That why they switched to a pen.

Well this is far from a childhood toy, but it feels like a youthful memory to me these days. About 20 years ago when my wife was just finishing college and when we started dating, she drove a Nissan pulsar nx. 5 speed. T top roof. Pop-up up and down head lights. A cute car for a cute girl. Well we just found the car locally after watching the for sale adds for about a year. We’re giving it a full restore and new pearl white paint job. I’ve been hunting down parts like it’s for an old pinball machine that is being revived. It just went on the hoist yesterday getting ready for the body work. 50A89970-9144-4FF9-BC0D-EA1316F25E82 (resized).jpeg50A89970-9144-4FF9-BC0D-EA1316F25E82 (resized).jpeg3ED20D48-278E-4135-B026-93AF6407F948 (resized).jpeg3ED20D48-278E-4135-B026-93AF6407F948 (resized).jpeg2C1CC6FE-535D-4E21-AE0F-A6602625DB06 (resized).jpeg2C1CC6FE-535D-4E21-AE0F-A6602625DB06 (resized).jpeg

I was one of the few people that paid for Columbia House, several times. I grew on a farm that was a long way from any music stores, so by the time I was like 14 I did the math and asked my parents if I could join. I would always return the cards on time, and buy just enough to fulfill the deal; then. Would sign up again to get the dozen for a buck deal. I have a cd collection of over 600 albums, I bet over 100 came from Columba house.

Edit added

Apparently a lot of people would just get the 12 for a buck and never pay for the rest. That’s why it closed down.

Quoted from ReadyPO:

I think the only high school class I got more benefit from was typing. Didn't hurt that I was like the only guy in that class either

I took all the shops throughout high school, and one “parenting” class my final year because it was a Sr. Social science class that didn’t conflict with my computer classes. I was the only guy in the class. It was my last class of the day and we regularly cooked food. It was a great class. I even retained some of the skills from that class and sewed a Harry Potter dress for my daughter over lockdown, and received points from my wife in the process. I figured with 30 years of woodworking experience I could figure out some material.

Quoted from ReadyPO:

Too funny. We did have two t.v.s growing up but the "big tv" I think was 27". The basement "kids" tv was 19" and we broke the channel knob arguing over which of the 13 stations were we going to watch. From then on out, it was vice grips for turning stations
[quoted image]

Our 2nd tv was black and white when I was real young, and we were lucky to get 6 channels off of the antenna if the rotor was turned the right way. Ours had lines marking the best spot for each station.

One of my favourite memories was Dec ‘87. I got Legend of Zelda for the NES, for my birthday, and a 19 inch colour tv for Christmas, so we didn’t have to use the big tv in the living room to play games.

Quoted from cottonm4:

My grandparents lived on the farm with well water, part line telephones, and one of these antenna rotators. On Saturday night, gramps would turn that rotator dial to the southeast for Saturday Night wrestling in St. Joseph Missouri. And then on Monday, he turned the dial to the north for wrestling in Omaha Nebraska. And the rotator would make these click click click sounds as it headed for the new setting.
That was in the 60s. To this day, I have never seen another rotator. Until the pic of yours.
Did your rotator make clicking sounds?

Yeah. I don’t remember if it was a click or a grind, but i clearly remember it making noise as you waited for it to turn. We also had well water a party phone line (one ring was for us, two short rings was for them) with the next farm up the road and free tv over the air. I only watched cable tv on rare occasions when we went to a friends place in the city. We used a rotor and antenna until the late 90’s or early 2000’s, then we had a mini dish with 100 channels or more.

Don’t believe the internet. A hoser is not a Canadian hillbilly, or idiot. A hoser is a loser. You loose the hockey game, and you’re hosing down the ice at the end of the night.

TL:DR I had totally forgot about this PSA until my buddy reminded me; then I instantly remembered it word for word.

So, my buddy shows a TicTok video of some stupid kid doing the “boiling water challenge”. Yes, it’s just as dumb as it sounds; think “ice bucket challenge” but hot water. The idiot dumps a big ol’ pot of scalding water right over his head and immediately begins screaming for his friend to hit him with the garden hose to cool off as he rolls on the ground in pain.

My other buddy in the group chat quickly posts this video, says it’s the first thing he thought about after seeing it. I had totally forgot about this public service announcement from the 80’s. but, as soon as I saw the first second it flooded back into my consciousness like a freight train. Boom. I’m singing along word for word, just as I did decades ago as a kid.

Did you guys have this PSA in with your Saturday morning cartoons, or was this a local ad for just Canada? I can think of 3 or 4 other song PSA ads from when I was a kid, but this one was lost for some reason.

I just bought this Bluetooth speaker a couple weeks ago. Has a working cassette deck and radio; also runs off of 6 “D” cell batteries. I didn’t put on any of the stickers, I think it looks perfect without them.DEA894B6-9C5A-4662-BF50-15FA76E85E1C (resized).jpegDEA894B6-9C5A-4662-BF50-15FA76E85E1C (resized).jpeg

Those Nintendo packs of cards were $.25 originally, now they’re close to $10 a pack once you add in shipping.

1980’s Esso gas giveaways! The track list is surprisingly good. I think it was just a Canadian thing. I can’t remember how many of them were in the set but I can remember having a half dozen different tapes from the gas station.

Hmm… I first heard it when the Muppets danced around to the song on the Ed Sullivan Show. A web search digs up that the song was first used for a scene in a Swedish sex film featuring models piling into a sauna. Ed Sullivan didn’t mention that at all.

Looks like a good movie.

That was pretty normal through the 80’s too. But we had lost lawn darts just as I was getting old enough to really play with them.

Quoted from DanQverymuch:

A common misconception, as that includes the awful infant mortality back then. Someone who made it to adulthood could expect to live well into their 70s on average. My own great great grandparents mostly made it into their 80s and 90s!

Yeah, I’ve had to correct people before that thought that too. I wonder if that is the reason for the saying “have an heir, then a spare.” Just because child mortality was so high. If you lived to 10, then you had a good chance to live a long life.

Quoted from girloveswaffles:

I used to have one here in Norwalk that's log gone. and there was one in Fullerton CA. for many years that had car-hop service, also long gone.
Not to long ago a couple of local malls had A&W locations in the food courts, also gone.
Now the closest one to me is almost a two hour plus drive away. The last one I saw in California is in Baker off I-15 heading to Las Vegas... two plus hour drive.

There’s almost 20 A&W’s within a 30 minute drive from me E309E161-AA1E-4A89-A969-974CBCECAA0C (resized).jpegE309E161-AA1E-4A89-A969-974CBCECAA0C (resized).jpeg

Just had a memory of playing with a space shuttle when I was really young. The main thing I remember was that you could push a button and the boosters would drop off. I thought the extra fuel tank was red plastic, but a quick search brought me to this Dinky toy from ‘79. I would have been too young in 79 to play with this but for some reason I get the feeling mine was from a thrift shop, because we weren’t that well off when I was young and I don’t remember the box or the payload for the shuttle.

I had turned 7 just months before the challenger explosion. Just imagine a young boy in love with space, playing with his space Lego and all that came along with kids in the mid 80’s. Then watching it explode live on tv. That memory has really stuck with me over the years. It’s one of the few “do you remember where you were when” moments in my life
