Quoted from mooch:

Ever mess around with a TV picture with magnets? My Dad didn’t like me doing this, thinking I would ruin our TV.
[quoted image]

Back in the days when 17” computer monitors were still crazy expensive and degaussing wasn’t an automatic option with a button, I would make two hours of pay at a local computer store to do it manually with big magnets.

It was a slow and tedious process but could be done.

Since we are talking about PCs I started on an old TI-99/4a. Whopping 16K of RAM if I recall and a cassette player for storage.

I saved enough money to upgrade to a color computer 3 then a Tandy 1000 EX.

Also anyone else ever use the old trick of connecting a MFM drive to a RLL controller and get 50% more capacity?

Did that on my first PC then used stacker. Got 60 MB out of a 20 MB Seagate ST-225 MFM.

Good old days when technology was fun. Now it is just a job for me.

Not complaining brought be a great job as a network engineer for 23 years now, and I am only 42 years old. Got hired directly out of high school.

I was a Nerd since I was 4 years old pounding the keys of the old TI.
