Quoted from Rezdog:This hung in every home I went into in the late 70s. Thought it was like some kinda parent cult thing going on.

I had calendar that had all those pictures. Sometime around 1979-80. Or 81.
Quoted from mooch:Here’s you and me the first day with a Rubik’s Cube.
This gave me a flashback to having wasted money once buying the "Ultimate Solution to the Rubik's Cube," which came sealed in an envelope.
Open the envelope, there's a bunch of stickers you're supposed to stick over the original stickers. There, you solved it!?
I hope the perpetrators of that scam are rotting in hell.
Quoted from mooch:Did you ever mail away for some item you wanted from the back of a cereal box, or some similar offer? The first thing I ever got this way was a Dennis the Menace cereal spoon. I was so excited to get this in the mail! This offer was from the year 1961, so I was only 4 years old.

Not Dennis the Menace but I still have the Campbell Soup Boy spoon (need to try and find my Welch’s Jelly Flintstone glasses)

I also got this “Goofy Grape Sings” record in the mail. The cornerstone of any serious vinyl collection. The ad for it was somewhere in the Sunday newspaper comics in 1966.

Well aren't you the bees knees.
Quoted from Mr68:Well aren't you the bees knees.
As I mentioned before, I always have questions.
Bees Knees:
"The origin of this expression is largely unknown, although there are a number of theories. Some people believe that it is a reference to the fact that bees carry pollen in sacks on their knees, and that the expression therefore alludes to this concentrated goodness. Others maintain that the saying is just a corruption of the word 'business'.
Another suggestion is that the 'bee' in question was actually Bee Jackson, a world champion Charleston dancer who was very popular in New York in the 1920's!"

No but I remember these.

Wow! I actually had that one! Thanks.
Here's a record called Gougar Speaks from Williams when they made the pinball machine Gougar in 1979.
I had a copy of it once many years ago that I found in a game and gifted it to a worthy collector.

Anybody remember seeing one of these stuck on top of a car antenna? First it was these Union 76 balls, followed later by a zillion other kinds. I once put a Mickey Mouse one from Disneyland on my car’s antenna, but it got stolen the same day.

How about putting a tiger in your tank?
tiger tail (resized).jpgAnybody ever think they could draw good enough send these charlatans any money? When I was young I did not realize this as the scam it was. I wonder if anybody ever won any of the prizes.
I'm betting the prizes were something like the guy at the state fair midway who would guess your weight or age for a dollar. If he guessed wrong, you would get a small stuffed toy that cost him 10 cents.
" Just draw the pirate and send your drawing along with $2.95 for shipping and handling and our team of artists will review your drawing. You might just win a prize."

MINI sent me one of those! It was a real blast from the past, but I never put it on my car for fear of it getting stolen.

Those correspondence school ads have been around a long time. I have one my dad drew back in the 30s somewhere around here. While looking for it, I came across this little product of my warped 7th grade mind.
My Mom saved some of my drawings and stuff, speaking of warped mind, here is one I did in 1961, 6 years old. Still working on achieving the dream. (EDIT I checked my scans, I do have a lot of pics I drew in 1961 but this one is not dated, I think this was done a few years later based on the drawing style).

Yeah. It’s pretty salty. I’d have gotten into a lot of trouble if my parents had found that.

I miss Shakey's.

The oldest artifact in my kitchen is this old wore out Tupperware drinking cup by the sink. My Mom bought it at a Tupperware sales party in the late 1950s around the time I was born. It sat by our kitchen sink the whole time I was growing up, wherever we lived. My Mom still had it by the sink when she passed 7 years ago. And there it sits by my sink today.

I had no idea that Shakey’s was still a going concern. We haven’t had one around here since the mid 70s. Are they still around in California? Any good?
When I was a kid, I was creeped out by the idea of voodoo dolls. They appeared in so many places in 1960s popular culture that I thought they were something real, like the Easter Bunny.

My dad copied the turtle and pirate as I recall, sent them in, and received a "prize" of a discount on their art course.
He actually bit and signed up, I think GI bill paid for most of it, they sent him art supplies and "assignments" and it seemed legit enough to me, but I was all of 8 or so, so what did I know.
He never did become a world-renowned artist, though.

Yeah, but now I’m old enough to know that those dolls are basically Bourbon Street gift shop novelties rather than supernatural demonic torture devices trying to kill me.

That's your memory maker, ain't it? I still have the shower brush my mom bought from the Fuller Brush man (remember him?) when I was 5 years old. That FB guy had all kinds of goodies in his sales case. I have always been terrified of spiders; While the FB guy was showing his wares I look up and saw one of those small black jumping spiders on the wall to which I gave out a yell. That old boy reached int this box of tricks, pulled out a can of bug spat. One spritz and the spider was gone. I don't know what all my mom bought that day, but I still have the brush 63 years later and it is still in like new condition.
