Some time ago I bought one of those DVD sets with all the Mad magazines, and I have been gradually going through them as I have time. I started with the first issue in 1952, and I'm just now hitting the 60s. I am thinking sometime around the mid 60s I should start recognizing some of the stuff from way back, as that is probably the time frame when I started reading them.

The early stuff is different than what it became in the later years, but as always there is lots of crazy stuff in there. From 1953:

Quoted from DCP:

I had the fighter jet, but have no idea whatever happened to it. The Steve Canyon helmet lasted a little longer. I like how the jet fighter projects targets onto the wall and you shoot them with darts. Here's a commercial:

I found this photo from 1963 where I'm jumping off a swing wearing my Steve Canyon helmet. I was 6 years old - I jumped off so many times, eventually I sprained my arm and had to wear a sling for weeks...
I do like the rare photos of the actual toys we had being used. I have a few more around somewhere...

Quoted from dirkdiggler:

I don't remember Crazy

Crazy was from the Marvel comic group,
they did borrow some of the artists used at both MAD and Cracked
Like John Severin and his sister Marie.

I also had a color organ like the one shown when i was in college,
I also built one from a Radio Shack electronics kit ( 4 color/4 frequencies) that i still have.

I had a “MAD Mobile” hanging from my bedroom ceiling light fixture for a couple of years. I made it from this insert in MAD, using plastic straws and thread.

Around age 8, I had a toy printing press like this one. Bad idea... The first thing I did with it was spill all the ink— horribly staining our white Formica kitchen table. The printing press was in the trash that same day.

That's funny. And those old formica tables have become nostalgic collectors items.

Sorry guys for the multiple posts past few days.... last week I decided to take off the rest of the year on a self imposed covid shutdown. Pretty bored so unfortunately my fellow pinsiders can probably expect a crap load more post. Damn hard to find stuff that hasn’t already been posted but fun nonetheless. Apologize if I get carried away in my boredom : )
Btw no better thrill then seeing someone post a toy that was completely forgotten by me such as Fake blood - how the hell did I forget that

I don't know how this game got past the censors

Not a toy, but I happened across this in a used bookstore a couple days ago. As soon as I saw the cover I remembered reading it (and reading it, and reading it) as a little kid.

Here’s a book that brings back memories for me. My parents couldn’t afford to buy a whole set of the World Book Encyclopedia. But we somehow did have the single volume for the letter “A.” I think it was from some store promotion where the first volume was $1 and the rest were full price. I milked this book for all it was worth. I tried to steer as many of my school papers and projects as possible to subjects starting with “A.” I remember writing a paper on the Aztecs.

Oh man.... Swinging as hard as I could and bailing off at its peak was my favorite.
Your Steve Canyon helmet with the visor up must of had all the neighborhood girls swooning. LOL

That's a great picture and memory. Thanks for posting.

I had an Atari 400 computer to “help me with my schoolwork.” But 99% of the time I spent on it was playing this game “Speedway Blast.”

Quoted from mooch:

the World Book Encyclopedia

We had the red set of World Books from the 50s, with annual update volumes through ‘63. I loved the illustrations of ships, planes, trains, trees, etc. I just cleaned out and sold my childhood home this past summer. I was going to donate them, but my older brother decided he just couldn’t part with the old encyclopedia.

#2726 3 years ago

I didn't know I still had this. It was something else my dad brought home to me. The small magnet has fallen off the roof of the creature's mouth. What it did was open its mouth when you ran the magnet in the ring holder over its nose.

When the nose is down there are a pair of eyes that appear.

Not much to it, but 65 years later I still have it.

Did you ever make a Christmas Countdown chain at school out of red and green paper rings with numbers written on them? It would get hung up somewhere at home. Then every day you would tear off a ring and it would be one day closer to Christmas. I LOVED that thing!

I still have all of my Hot Wheels track from the 60s/70s. Enough track to run dual lanes for an entire block. Plus loops, jumps, bridges, kickers, etc. Most of my original cars are gone, but we have about 150 new-ish cars.

Until recently, once or twice a year we would get it out and make a massive track, attracting all of the kids in the neighborhood. Most of the kids (including mine) are now too old to care, but someday there will be grandchildren...

This is the Phaser I had, from 1975. It had a flashlight bulb and made the phaser sound. You could put in different disks in the end to project the shape of the Enterprise or Klingon ship, etc.. Of course the bulb wasn't very bright.

For Christmas one year, I bought a twister board game for my roommate and his girlfriend to play with me and mine.

Except I opened the game, added a couple Speedos a couple bikini sets, some baby oil, a small plastic sheet, and wrote my own instructions

It really was just a gag gift, but the best part was that they thought I had really found an adult version because I had taken it into work and used their plastic packaging machine to reseal in shrinkwrap like new

I was at a party where a guy had a big checkered shag rug with huge chess pieces on it. It was cool, but he could’ve gotten more girls on the floor with Twister.

I have one in my office which my university students think is a destination resort. A few just come in, press the button and walk away. Everyone smiles! I considered hacking the music at one point but like so may other projects....
