Love this thread. Agree with the, "a bike was your lifeline in the suburbs" comment, earlier.

Heck yes!

My brother and I, arpund 1965, inherited boxes of Army men, tanks, buildings, etc.
The relatives crom the kids then older, gave us more than we could ever use!
We took over the finished attic, sometimes up to 4 of us, and with Lincoln logs, city blocks, and anything else set up armies.
Lincoln log catapults were our weapons.
Wed play all weekemd taking "shots" at each other until someone one.
It lost its fun after a few years, to be replaced with aurora race tracks, estes rockets, and baseball.
So what to do with old army men?

Burn them, blow them up, launch them in a rocket, run them over!

The m80 brought it all back.

Green army men abuse!!!!

Oooh...I remember the coffin bank. I went thru a couple of those.
Don't ever recall seeing that guillotine tho'. Looks cool. Is it a piggy bank as well?

The quillotine was an Aurora plastic model kit from the sixties

My Atari 2600.

Asteroids & Atlantis were my favourites.

Mom surprised me with this GI Joe one day because he had red hair like me. My friend's didn't have beards, so I tried to shave him. Fiasco. Another interesting thread would be "what toys did you want as a kid and never got, but were jealous of the kids who did, and there's still some longing for it." >> Coleco football. GI Joe Jeep. U Drive It.

Quoted from pinwiztom:

While we all tended to play outside more than today's kids,
on those rainy days I did play board games.
Was really into military/war/strategy games.
Most of you probably remember Stratego and Battleship and Risk,
but does anyone remember Combat! (I was obsessed with that show when I was a kid)
This game was not half bad for a game based on a TV show.

Or what about Conflict (loved the game pieces on that one.)

I LOVED Combat.....best theme song ever( besides Jonny Quest, of course) ... we played army outside constantly, and I was always Sgt. Saunders. We used tree branches for guns and if you found the perfect one shaped time a Tommy gun, it was coveted. And, according to neighborhood rules, if shot and killed, you laid there motionless for an hour before joining back in the fight.
Rat Patrol and 12 O' clock High were classics as well.

1979, loved my BigTrak and drove everyone in the family nuts with it.

Building and racing go-carts was extremely popular in my neighborhood!

#919 7 years ago

WOW they look exactly like the ones we used to build, how funny is that. This thread is great brings back a lot of good times. I was telling my wife yesterday that it is amazing how many games there were back then. Life was just so much simpler back then. I remember playing the game Risk at a friends house all night until the street lights came on that was my signal that I had to leave to get home and then continuing the next night with it. Those were the "good old days". Keep the pictures coming I am loving this.

Shogun Warriors ! Fired missiles, axes etc ...2 feet tall .....awesome ! These weren't readily available in the UK so my uncle brought some back from a business trip to the US in the late 70s

I had Dragun, and my bro had Mazinga.

Wish we still had them, they were still boxed in great condition Think we gave them away when we grew out of them

Yeah they ruled I have my childhood boxed raydeen and goldrake (grew up in Italy so we were one of the few countries that got the goldrake figure). The goldrake looks sorta similar to the mazinga you show there

We did the same thing. Lumber came from scrap piles at new home construction yards. Wheels came from wagons, old push lawn mowers, etc. We put a big wood screw or bolt & nut through middle of front axle, so you could steer with your feet just as shown in the pic above. Then we would go to neighbor's house that had the steepest driveway and take turns ridin em down.

I used to play that game with my dad every Friday night when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite games.

I would spend hours on a Saturday afternoon practicing my shots.

#927 7 years ago

OMG SteveO I remember that basketball game, my brothers and I wore that thing out. Nice simple game that gave us hours of entertainment. Try putting that game in front of two 8 year olds now what do you think their reaction would be??? Times have changed my friend and it is just my opinion that it is not for the better. Great memories though.

We called them Chugs, go carts had motors on them.

Kids these days get too many things and don't care about them........ at least once a month someone leaves their bike or scooter behind at the school where I work ..... these were at the bike rack one Friday arvo so as usual I brought them in and then couldn't help putting a little photo shoot together lol

When I was a kid my bike was my freedom. I would have been devastated if I lost/had my bike stolen.
But I doubt parents these days tell their kids to be home for supper after breakfast.

Looking for some help.

Grandmother had a 6-Wheeler RC truck. It was mostly black with I believe red and green accents, and an open bed. Think the wheel wells were red. Took like 6 D-Cell batteries. Guessing it was 60's or 70's, or early 80's vintage.

Any RC enthusiasts out there that know of sites I may be able to look this thing up?

Thanks!

I remember, as a kid, we visited some family friends who had one of these. The adults stayed up late playing with it in the kitchen.
My dad then made one for us. It was very popular, and as a bonus we played with our Matchbox cars on it. It is still at my parents house, and still gets used from time to time!

No idea what that thing is but it looks like it might be fun?

#946 7 years ago
Quoted from AlexF:

the [thing] next to the guy's hand is a "top" (it's upside down). it's positioned at the end of the playfield (in the center) with a string wound around the narrow section. you pull the string quickly, causing the top to spin and move through the maze. the goal is for the "top" to knock down as many of the pins before it loses momentum and falls over

#947 7 years ago
Quoted from AlexF:

No idea what that thing is but it looks like it might be fun?

It's a spinning top game. You start the top at one end and hope that it will go through every chamber and knock down all the pins.

If it gets in the small chambers it's pretty much guaranteed to knock down the pins, but it can easily miss them in the large open areas. Sometimes the top can get hung up in a small chamber and you end up with a really low score...which is frustrating.

#948 7 years ago

We always called it "Skittles".

Wow. Looking through this thread I saw all kinds of things I had through my childhood and into my teens. My first favorites were the secret agent stuff - the Six Finger, and Mattel Zero-M line. I had the Radio Rifle, Camera pistol Pocket Shot, and Sonic Blaster. My Mom used to take that Sonic Blaster away from me all the time for shooting my sisters with it.

Then as I got older it was Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. I still have all my cars (maybe 150) and tracks and used to set them up for my kids to play. Then eventually it was Atari. I have my 2600 at my cabin with probably 50 game cartridges. Also have an 800XL with two drives and over 300 floppies loaded with games.
