Miller ponies... church keys... Mickey's hand grenades... lotsa memories!

#7253 2 years ago

Who remembers staying up late on Sunday night to listen to the Westwood One radio network and Dr Demento?

#7254 2 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

Hard to believe but those church keys are antiques.

It's from an online ad and for new ones. They're not needed for soda or beer cans anymore, but if you need to open something like a can of broth, a large juice can or condensed milk can you do need one.

You could open a can of oil with one too if you were to cheap to buy one of these:

"Demento" and yes. he did his four hour show here in Los Angeles on KMET 94.7. Remember when he was one of the first people to play record or recordings from The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, the B-52's, DEVO and Weird Al Yankovic?

They were introduced in 76 and supposedly one company still made them until 2007.

I looked and used taps only go for about $20 but then again they are useless now. I do like that mine is from Genesee and I didn't see another.

Wow I forgot all about OUI magazine! Growing up in the late 1970’s / early 80’s most of my friends fathers had fairly large stacks of men’s magazines along with all the other junk they had collected over the years that got put down in the basement. Back in the good old days you had to work to find titillating info/ entertainment! Playboy was the most common and pretty tame! A few of them had others like OUI or Penthouse that were a little more explicit.

The home I grew up in had a really long driveway. We got cable after our neighbor did. He was a TV junkie and got EVERY pay channel. The guys who installed the cable just tapped off his service to avoid trenching a few hundred feet along the driveway. It was awesome to get the Playboy channel(after 9:00 pm!)along with Showtime,Cinemax,The movie Channel, Prism and HBO! We didn’t get charged so my parents didn’t complain.

I remember two of the girls in our pre teen group of friends watching with us when the parents were out to dinner. They said “ this Sucks! They don’t show the men below the waist! “ Funny but true! Sorry ladies! It was super tame by today’s standards but awesome at the time.

Mom did a pretty good job. Scrap book is large. 24" x 20" London, Paris Amsterdam, Madrid. Kept a map of all cities plus whatever they did or visited. Bunch of Spain tourism posters and these London playbills.

My parents liked Madrid so much that they stayed there for 3 months before heading down to South Africa.

You deserve bonus upvotes for showing the pump on a Asteroids cocktail machine. I have to go digging in the basement. I’m pretty sure I have a beer ball tap. They were the perfect size for lightweight teenage drinkers. 1/4 and 1/2 barrels were a little too large plus you had to leave the deposit for the keg or tap. It was easier to get a older brother/sister to pick us up a ball. The pumps were $10 or 15 bucks if I remember correctly. It was either 5.2 (std size)or 3.8 gallons(mini size) of the Gods Golden Nectar!

Times were different. I remember Police officers just taking our beer or making sure whoever was driving wasn’t drunk if we got pulled over or they showed up for a noise complaint.

I still have a bunch of my old Starlog magazines. When it first came out, it was great! They had featured issues on T.V. series both old and new, there were episode guides for your favorite Sci-Fi shows!
They even had a short article on the Atari Superman pin

I was going to ask who remembers the 7 oz Miller shorty bottles, but apparently they are still made.[quoted image]

Vivid and wonderful memories of going to work with my Dad in the early 70's on Saturdays. 5:30 am breakfast at a real diner, then an easy weekend shift at work (manufacturing facility - he was a class A mechanic). We stopped at the "package store" on the way home and once we were out of the city, he would drag me onto his lap and I would steer his Volkswagen Beatle all the way home while he ran the gas/brakes/gears ... and drank 2 or 3 out of the 7oz Miller High Life "pony pack". We'd pull into our driveway and I would be responsible for carrying into the house the remaining beer! Lost him a few years ago on Thanksgiving day. He was a great guy and a super Dad.

Well, Ten years later, The Haunted Mansion finally opened up after 7 years of construction(The Mansion exterior had been there since late 1962) , Bear Country was built and became the first new area added to the park, The Tomorowland Space port got built and renamed Space Mountain, The Mark III monorails were put into service about the time that map came out, The Starcade was built and opened, and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln became the Walt Disney Story.

Wish I could have afforded this 1962 Disneyland Map that was for sale at the 2019 San Diego Comic con though:E03F4192-98F2-4E6E-9183-0449A4FB8D8F_1_105_c (resized).jpegE03F4192-98F2-4E6E-9183-0449A4FB8D8F_1_105_c (resized).jpeg

I've got a bunch of old Starlog magazines packed away somewhere.

Funny story...back in the 80s I ran into a girl that I knew from grade-school (that I hadn't seen since then). We were now both in our 20s.

Me : "So what do you do?"
Her : "I work in the city." (meaning NYC)
Me : "Doing what?"
Her : "I'm an assistant Editor."
Me : "Cool, for who?"
Her : "It's a magazine in the city."
Me : "Really, what magazine?"
Her : "It's a good job, I like it."
Me : "What magazine is it?" (at this point I'm realizing that she doesn't want to tell me, so I'm thinking it must be porn...)
Her : "It's called [mumble-mumble], and I like the job a lot."
Me : "What was that, what's it called?
Her : (dropping her shoulders and sighing...) "It's called Starlog."
Me : "Starlog, that's awesome! I read Starlog a lot. It sounded like you didn't want to tell me, like it was in porn or something..."
Her : "No. I just get sick of when I tell someone what it's about, they always ask if I have to wear Spock ears at work."

When I was a Sophomore in High School (1971/72), my English teacher Mr. Best had everyone bring a record to school. He then played each one and asked the student what the lyrics meant to them. I brought “Signs” by the Five Man Electrical Band since it was an easy interpretation. One guy brought “I Get Around” by The Beach Boys. After it was played, he was asked what the lyrics meant and said “He gets around.” That got a big laugh. But the one that stood out was “Sweet Leaf” by Black Sabbath. The dude that brought that record said it was about pot and told the class how much he loved to smoke pot. Haha- the look on Mr. Best’s face was priceless.

Today's Special! I remember watching that and also You Can't Do That on Television, both on Nickelodeon. Danger Mouse and Rocky and Bullwinkle too, but I think they might have been on a different channel.

One of my oldest memories is getting up stupid early on Saturday morning to watch cartoons. The Green Forest was one of the first that I can remember that’s something other then Loony Toons.
