Quoted from Rezdog:Word on the street said my jr. high school’s safety patrol background check was brutal : )[quoted image]
I confess that I wore that exact thing in 7th grade. But it was worth it for the train trip to DC. I still have a box of pictures from that trip.
I too was a safety patrol member in jr high, equipped with those long lollipop poles stopping traffic on First St. next to the school.
The prime perk was getting out of class 10-15 min early to main our stations at the crosswalks.
And of course those cool belts and sashes and badges, bestowed nothing but honor with a healthy mix of ridicule too.
Quoted from pinwiztom:was a safety patrol member in jr high
Jr. High?
We had the lollipop stop signs, etc. But when we all headed for 7th grade we were on own own. It was a mile walk to Jr. high so we had already crossed many streets to get there.
Quoted from cottonm4:But when we all headed for 7th grade we were on own own.
In our situation, the Jr.High was located on the same huge city block as the (separate) middle school, (with 5th&6th graders);
so I guess the school board felt that the 7/8th graders were more responsible to look out for the youngers kids crossing traffic.
One of the streets passing by the school yards was a very very busy main street, actually a hiway running thru town,
from Gilroy onto Watsonville and Santa Cruz over the foothills towards the ocean 20 miles away.
I had this “Chipmunks Sing The Beatles Hits” album when I was 7 years old. My Mom played her Beatles albums all the time, but I played this one on my own little record player. I loved every note of it. For a few of the songs, such as “P.S. I Love You,” I heard the Chipmunks version before I heard the Beatles version.

Your mom and I would have got along famously. I played that first album relentlessly.
I never heard the Chipmunks sing Beatles songs.

We had this too, this is the first time even seen an image of it on 40+ years.

I never hear of this album either, but this is the one we had as a kid. We also had a Spike Jones album too we listened to, but no clue which one that was.
220px-Let%u2019sAllSingWithTheChipmunksActualcover (resized).jpgI never had a Chipmunks record. Here is some of my childhood vinyl:
I also had boxes of 45s that had belonged to my older sisters, late 50s to late 60s stuff. Beach Boys, girl bands, the Beatles and other British Invasion acts, and a whole lot of Motown! I wish I still had that treasure trove. They had reclaimed it all by the time I was in high school.

I had several kiddie records for my little record player. One standout record for me was Popeye’s “Red and Green.” I had the audiophile yellow 78RPM version.

The pre-production first pressing did not have the publishing rights listed on the label. The very short run second pressing did include the ASCAP and BMI listings, but incorrectly lists only the first song as BMI, when it should be BMI for tracks 1 and 2. All later pressings have the correct publishing rights listed, making this a rather rare example.

Yes. That is the one. Sometime a couple of years later I gave it to the neighbor girl across the street. I saw her a couple of years ago and she still has it. Maybe I better ask to have a another look at it.
And I felt like I was the only kid in the world who did not get to watch them on Ed Sullivan. We were a one TV family and my dad watched something else. I dun't know. Maybe he was still pissed off at me. A few months earlier he was drunk and was talking about us going hunting on a Sunday and I said, " But I'll miss my Roy Rogers show". That really pissed him off
Back in the day I rocked or boogied listening to K-Tel albums. All the hits on one album. Exposed me to a wide varsity of music from rock with Cheap Trick to Funk of The Brothers Johnson. This variety was good when I was under 10 years old. I feel it’s the reason why I love so many different types of music today. Thanks K-Tel

Speaking of albums. I had a subscription to the Disney records. My three faves were haunted house, spooky sounds and aristocrats?
But, My mother had this in her collection when I was seven as well as several others like the moody blues and Bachman turner overdrive.
This forming several preferences for life.

I had a couple of those. You need to pump them up so much that you can’t possibly move the plunger any further. I’d get them up three or four stories. I also had a different, larger one that looked more like a Saturn V. We would shoot them at each other, of course.

Back when the girls were young, ban the bra was in full swing, and the boobies didn't sag.
I had extra images to add of her, too. But I held back.
I was going to add about how barbi benton then later attracted me. You can see the almost see the taste forming in my under ten brain.

But you all remember how hot you were for Catherine Bach in her Daisy Dukes?

Weight gain after plastic surgery never ends well. But be fair, that pic was without makeup, walking her dog, talking on her phone. Everyone looks goofy if you snap a pic at the right instant while they are speaking. I'll stick with my youthful memory of her!

Was going thru some boxes with various misc stuff in them, while trying to organize, after getting a new floor installed in the Basement (Gameroom, etc.)
And I came across the paystub from my very first real job, (where they took FICA and other taxes out) straight out of high school.
I did not hold down any real jobs while in high school previously,
with maybe the exception of mowing a few lawns (with push mower) when neighbors went on vacation a couple of times.
or covering a friends paper route for a week when his family went on summer vacation (boy did I hate that job).
Of course I had chores around the house to earn my allowance and such, like pulling weeds or mowing our lawn or doing dishes etc.
This first real job was for Granite Rock ( a fairly big in the So.BayArea/central Calif) construction firm,
that had readymix cement plants and hauled cement and aggregate for construction projects etc.
They were building & opening up a new ready mix plant in Gilroy where I lived and it was my job to basically put in the landscaping and irrigations system,
basically I was a ditch digger, digging holes for plants, trees and bushes and operating a ditch witch to dig trenches
to then lay the PVC water pipe irrigation system. Landscape "Engineer" if you will.
Anyway, attached is my first paystub, it appears I was making $2.50/hr which was fairly decent for a fresh out of high school graduate, at that time.
Only worked there for about 6 weeks before I started school again at the local Jr.College in the fall.
I still have the white hard hat they gave me and used, hanging in my garage.
I got a couple of stories about that job which I might share later.
Quoted from pinwiztom:Any body want to have a draft card burning party?
Maybe I can convince my wife to burn her bra.
[quoted image]
I was fortunate enough to have become of age after they ended the draft, though still had to register.
I had already enlisted. My draft lottery number was 64 for my birthdate of August- 1952.
You bring back some memories.

My birthday is 6/20/1952 and my number was 30. It was the first date picked that year. My mother called within a nanosecond and was crying. I took 3 physicals but had deferments till the draft ended. I would have joined the Navy if pressed.

On my 16th birthday (you do the math) my mom brought me to get a job. Alexanders in Valley Stream, NY. $1.65 an hour and take home for 20 hours was $25.80. Not sure why I remember that and no chance I have a paystub.
And it was right next to the Green Acres Bowling Alley. Great pins in the basement and I learned all about life in the parking lot.
