When you can remember the highways before white lines were painted on the outside edge near the shoulder.

When a lot of drivers still had to hand signal their right turns, left turns, and stops with hand signals. Arm straight out to left turn. Arm turned up at the elbow for right turns. And arm turned down at the elbow for stopping. ( If you don't know what I am talking about you ain't old enough).

When air conditioning for a car was an expensive option costing 400.00 to $600.00 extra. And a lot of people rode with their windows cranked down.

When you remember the under dash air conditioners that owners were having added to their cars.

According to Carnac the Magnificent, that hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar has been kept on Funk and Wagnall's back porch for all these years.

Except bicyclists are still supposed to make the same hand signals when in traffic.

My parents' old VW had semaphore turn signals and no gas gauge. It had a reserve handle like a motorcycle. (Web photo, not our car but just like it):

They also had a car called an Auto Union that was made by DKW that had a pushbutton starter and a 2-stroke engine. You poured oil into the gas tank when you got gas. Freaked out many service station attendants. (Another web photo. Somewhere I have some pictures of our Auto Union. Ours was yellow like this one.):

how did that thing work? How was it activated? Is that for a left turn or a right turn?

The picture was a left turn signal. I think there was a lever on the dash that activated it mechanically by pulling a wire.
EDIT: see post https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/what-were-your-favorite-childhood-toys/page/123#post-6454351 by onemoresean for correction (they were solenoid operated):

And one more of me at age 14 taking a cousin for a ride in our '71 VW. I learned how to drive by the time I was 13 and got to practice driving on dirt roads near an old family house we used to have in Barre, Massachusetts:

Here’s a pic from the last of my semaphore collection that I sold this year.
They worked off a regular turn signal switch and were activated by a solenoid.
I kept one of my plates from a 1958 European semaphore VW that I restored in the 80’s.

That's really cool - I've never seen the mechs before. I like how the solenoids cook their wrapping paper just like EM pinball hold coils.

I guess you could consider that those are from good drivers. My wrappers would be pristine. I’m so bad at not using my signals enough.

The house I have belonged to my late Mother who passed away five years ago. When i was on furlough from work last spring, I had a lot of time to do some house cleaning around the house. one day i started going through the kitchen cabinets. Lo and Behold, way up on the top shelf and in the back of one of the cabinets was the Jar of Mayo.

The jar doesn't actually have a date on it, but on the lid is a fold out taped to it about a chance to "Win Season Tickets for you're favorite Major League team for the 2001 season.

OK. I'll bite. Why is there a market for these semaphore units? Are there still enough old Vee Dubs being restored to make use for these. I'm not knocking it. Just curious.

When I would go to visit, I almost choked on the mayo and did not care for Velveeta.

Today, I have a hard time with Miracle Whip and prefer mayo. I still don't care for Velveeta and will devour slices of American cheese ( I suppose I should read the recipe).

And on a tile floor, too

In the late 70s, I was trying to make a living trying to sell vacuum cleaners ( Yeah, I know all the jokes. They are in a book sitting next to my book of lawyer jokes ). Selling sweepers is a commission job. I about starved to death. An Uber gig would have been much better.

Selling sweepers takes you into a lot of houses. It was always interesting to see how strangers lived.

I went into a small, two bedroom cracker box where extra money was not part of this household's story. The housewife was very neat and tidy. This was apparent when you noticed all of the clear plastic runners going from room to room. Any part of the carpet that would be a pathway from one room to another was covered with plastic runner.

I felt sorry for her husband then and still feel sorry for him today . God forbid if he laid a screwdriver on the kitchen table.

BTW: I'm a slob .

Cleaning day involves me moving a pile of crap from one corner of the house to another corner

Did I also say that I am not married and live by myself

Velveeta is not cheese. It is a cheese product but not cheese. It does make great queso though.

There is nothing better than a braunschweiger sandwich made with fresh white Wonder Bread, Longhorn cheese, Vlasic Stackers pickles and a heaping mound of Miracle Whip.

I had a lot of Braunschweiger sandwiches at my Grandma’s house when I was a kid. Delicious! But sometimes she had this Sandwich Spread instead, which came in a similar looking tube. Everyone seemed to like this stuff but me. Yecch— It was made with sweet relish which I can’t stand.

My aunt bought me a full box of these in 1973. Or 4. Thus creating the desire to open full boxes of these things.

The whole box was five dollars. As I recall. My aunt has passed on but her son, I keep in touch with him.

In the mid 1970's my father would take us to 7-eleven on weekends to get a slurpee and candy. Often we would get the penny candy to stretch our dollars. Back then they had a fairly large selection of candies you could get for a penny or two.

Edit: I forgot to add that sometimes the guy behind the counter when we went to pay would walk over to the candy and grab a couple extra handfuls and put them in our bag for free. Good memories.

The little candy store near my school was loaded with one-cent goodies. But I also remember their big canister of Rold Gold pretzel rods. These were two cents each. I splurged for these quite often. You only live once.

Behold, the object longest in my physical possession, my "Secret Storage Box" from grade school, grade 3 if not earlier. To this day I don't know why I needed to hide anything in a pencil box at age 8, but I remember my friend Ken acquiring it from me somehow, as evidenced by his name carved on the side, and I just had to get it back somehow, which I evidently did! Funny the details your memory decides to skip.

The swim club my parent belonged to when I was a kid had 1 and 3 meter springboards. water was 10 feet deep but sloed upward to meet the main pool. a good run and bounce could get you close to where it was 5 foot deep. at some point in time they took it out and dumped the frame in the woods/swamp out side the fence
