Quoted from pinwiztom:I buy something on amazon or basically any online marketplace,
then for weeks after i am bombarded with ads for the product that I just bought,
why would I want to buy another?!?!
Even funnier, the same thing happens to me when I look things up on eBay to see what they're worth, simply because I'm in a thrift store deciding whether to buy, at ten cents on the dollar, something to resell. I sure as hell don't want to buy it at retail!
Quoted from OLDPINGUY: We will try tonight to see if a discussion on "Sex Toys" produces the same results!
Like E.T.'s Finger Light
et (resized).jpgrtfinger (resized).jpgQuoted from dmacy:Wonder how many moms “used” those ET fingers for their own enjoyment.
My mom didn't have a ET finger but I was horrified when I found her toy drawer looking for Xmas presents
Quoted from ReadyPO:If you want to see how much censorship goes on web search engines, do a search on any controversial subject with Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go, Yippy, Dogpile, Yahoo. You may be surprised to see how much censorship goes on, either by completely omitting certain websites/pages, or by placing them many pages back (almost 95% of web searches never go beyond the first page.)
Search engines are about one thing, and one thing only: making money. Please give me an example of a “controversial” subject where the results are “censored”.
Quoted from dirkdiggler:My mom didn't have a ET finger but I was horrified when I found her toy drawer looking for Xmas presents
Yeah, I didn't just find a toy but a couple of Polaroids too.
Quoted from swampfire:Search engines are about one thing, and one thing only: making money. Please give me an example of a “controversial” subject where the results are “censored”.
Pick any controversial topic - pretty much any, but usually left wing vs right wing. Example, abortion
Duck Duck Go first returns: Wikipedia, Planned Parenthood, Pros and Cons, World Health Organization, Definition, Medical Facts
Google first returns: 3 ads on how to get an abortion, then planned parenthood, then how to get an abortion again, abortion is a right
On some searches, returns are omitted all-together - no links to websites of certain groups or stories. On others, more nuanced but a definite bias. And from Googles own page:
"Google and its subsidiary companies, such as YouTube, have removed or omitted information from its services in order to comply with company policies, legal demands, and government censorship laws. Numerous governments have asked Google to censor content."
Note, "company policies" is the catch-all for whatever we want.
Quoted from cottonm4:I read a story about Amazon and Bezos several years ago. Seems Amazon has an Adult Section somewhere. Some low level Amazon wonk set an email fo guy about his purchase and Bezos called several to the carpet. The short answer is that you do not compromise any Amazon customer with an email they would rather their significant other not see.
Search for candles or screw drivers. Something like that.
huh .....?

I liked it better when no one was tracking what you looked up in the dictionary, encyclopedia, or the Sears catalog.

Search Pro-Life on Google, and you get the results you want.
Sometimes its the "words" like "Patriot Act" vs "Govt Spying"
More people use Google, and its for Money, absolutely.
Perhaps it simply the results of users who need more privacy, vs the Millions that arent.

I would say a lot of what you see in google is basically an ad. You pay to get your website to be one of the first you see in a search. Do not pay, it will still show but be 30 pages back or something where nobody looks. But of course, they clearly control what you see on any search.
I get calls all day from google wanting me to pay to have my business out toward the front. I do not pay them so they change my hours to closed for good. I will find the sight and change it and they change it back.
Quoted from EdisonArcade:Catamaran skateboarding for those steep hills.
[quoted image][quoted image]
My friend and I built a “go cart” out of plywood and old lawn mower parts - no engine, no brakes and the steering was iffy. He lived on a steep hill. We took a few turns scaring the crap out of ourselves, then went back to playing pool in his basement.

0D76BAAA-E967-4A91-A7F6-1AEBA0FEACD5 (resized).jpegI recently bought a box of Mrs. Grass Soup mix. My heart sank after discovering that it no longer has the Golden Flavor Nugget. I used to love watching that little egg dissolve in the boiling water when my Mom made the soup.

Even a Google Ad, on a News/portal site, NOT in side Bar, masquerading as a News/info story.
This bothers me to no end.

I never had thought about just searching for them. Now I can see why Bezos raked the guy over the coals for sending out an email about "your recent purchase".
I would like to hear if Art tried "sex toys" on his Google Home and see what kinds of ads he was bombarded with

We looked forward to the next year's publication to see what was going to be on the cover. What simple mindless entertainment. Lasted about 30 minutes too![quoted image]
in 1980s, I read a book called The Clam Plate Orgy. It was about the use of art in subliminal stimulation ( basically hidden messages in the art work). It got me to looking at ads in a different way.
Indeed, I hit the magazine rack in the college library and found several ads with questionable art hiding in plain sight.
Here is an example. This is a Coca-Cola ad that was used in Australia in the 1980s. And I did see a lot of questionable art hidden in the ice cubes when I was looking around.

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:Yup, toy ads popping up from google browser.
Might need a new pet "rabbit"
Anyone have one of these?[quoted image]
I have seen one of those huge Zippos.
What kind of toy ads are popping up in the browser? Something for Tonka Trucks?
Quoted from OLDPINGUY:Adult toys...I won't even dare to go to Facebook
Sounds like Google Home could get a lot of people in trouble.
I wonder what happens if you were doing and talking about something illegal? ( I spent a lot of time running with the bikers in the 70s, sharing our common love for Harley-Davidsons. I learned a lot about how crooks think ).
What happens if you start talking about AR-15s and other weaponry?
I think I will carry on with my pocket sized 3-ring binder and old school pencil I have to sharpen with a knife.
Reminds me of when you could listen in on other people's baby monitors. (I guess you still could if someone is using an old school one, with no scrambling.) Some had microphones so sensitive you could hear conversations throughout the house.
Same goes for early ten channel cordless phones. I heard drug deals being discussed, arguments, phone sex...
Quoted from cottonm4:remember this from when I was 5 years old. I'll be 70
And it probably cost her all of $1.39 in 1955

I also have that soldering iron. Hakko 880 is a great unit.
Quoted from OLDPINGUY:Anyone have one of these?
Is that a big lighter or a little World’s Series?
Quoted from Rezdog:Is that a big lighter or a little World’s Series?
The lighter...well both.
In my early 20s, I had the pleasure of opening a NIB (New in Crate) Rockola World Series.
It was packed in Straw, and was an amazing experience to set up and play!
Quoted from mooch:After a bit of searching, I found this toy jet that looked promising.
There’s one on eBay:

I really appreciate the effort, but sadly no. My recollection is that it was more space themed. The missiles were yellow and fired with a button (spring loaded).
My grandpa had a hobby store back in the 90’s. I vaguely remember it, and his garage, which had a floor to ceiling model railway in it. Unfortunately he and grandma had to move into an apartment, so it was likely trashed.
Grandpa used to shovel coal on steam locomotives, and his biggest regret in life was leaving the railway.
Anyways, my favourite book growing up was one that grandpa gave me. The book is called Train Wrecks. I still have it, and this is the best picture.
