Quoted from Rezdog:

[picture of record racks]

Our local record store had rows of bins marked from A to E, including
A rock
B blues
C rap
D classical
E folk
I figured the row for "Crap" was properly classified.

Seeing that reminded me of this extremely high tech device for TV's

So much better than having to stand at the TV adjusting rabbit ears!

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

[quoted image]

When I was 10 I went to stay a couple of weeks at my older sister's. It was a small/medium size town. I got acquainted with the local kids and we tore up the neighborhood with our bicycles.

There was an old abandoned house ( kid magnet) and we started looking around. This house had the basement doors on the outside; Those types with the double doors that swing out to show the stairs. The doors were gone and the basement was open. We went in.

There were mountains of those old Edison cylinder records. We loaded up and came home on our bikes cradling a load of Edison records in one arm.

I had them for years. And now I don't. I can't remember what I did with them but when I found out they were worth pennies, I lost interest.

Not many people will remember this, but before IR remotes, there were ultrasonic remotes, or “clickers”. I only remember seeing one in my life, at my friend’s house. Our TV didn't have a remote, so I was impressed. You could also jangle your keys to change the channel. This guy has a whole blog about these things:

http://tvclickers.blogspot.com

My grandparents all called the remote a “clicker” until their dying days.

Quoted from DanQverymuch:Lol -- 0%! It's fun to be cynical, I know this better than anyone, but as a matter of fact their strawberry syrup does contain strawberry puree.

I was thinking the same thing. About the strawberry taste.

cool story, Rob.

I grew up with my grandmother having a player and cabinet.
Watching and listening to Wax cylinders, the first 10 years of life provides strange memories.

Later, when the kids were young, we found this restored 78 player.
At the time, it was very unusual to find a fancy grill, and in a light colored wood, in this case Oak.
Many memories of playing "Chicken in the Car" and the kids dancing and singing along!

(Furby to the left, Hillary nut cracker to the right)

Try the whole song, guys....my 2 year old granddaughter started dancing like a 1930s flapper first time she heard it!
Old soul.

The original wired cable tv remotes and receiver box from around 1980. The wires would get tugged out of the controllers from getting accidentally yanked when tripping on them. I believe they had flimsy clip landline phone style connectors.

I'm Craig

My parents had a 78 record player and a stack of 78s. The two songs I remember as my 9 year old self was:

1) Smoke Smoke Smoke (that cigarette ) by Tex Williams

(everything is that songs resonates. I smoked my first cigarette at 13 or 14. I became a nicotine slave for the next 46 years. I quit them in 2013. The damage, if any, is done. It has been said that your body will repair itself as time moves on. Hopefully, I am repairing ).

and this ditty called " Bump on the Head Brown". I went looking for this song several months ago and had no luck. Today, I just typed in the name of the song in the browser search bar and here in is.

It is stupid song and I want to laugh, until I realize how stupid most of the pop music we listen to really is. Sort of like Leslie Gore's "It's my Party".

My father collected 78rpm records for most of his life. A good chunk of my early years consisted of helping him move records from the basements of old record stores in NYC where he would buy the whole lot.

At one point in time he had over 500,000 records (most of them having been moved at least once by me). Eventually he sold them off, and then donated the remainder to a University music library. If I never see another 78 record, that will be fine with me.

Pinball machines may be harder to move, but at least I've only got 3 of them...

I had a Great Aunt that had a "clicker" like that when I was a kid. While I thought it was really cool, it always gave me a massive headache for some reason - never did understand why.

MATCH THE NAME GAME. How well do you remember character names from old television series? Try to match each name from the first (letter) group with a name from the second (number) group (the same actor will have played both parts). For example: Larry Hagman played K) Anthony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie and 11) J.R. Ewing on Dallas. (PM me if you want the answers.)

A) Fred Rutherford . . . . 1) C.R. Grover
B) Tom Corbett . . . . . . 2) Donald Mallard
C) Floyd Norton . . . . . . 3) Gomez Addams
D) Albert Stroller . . . . . 4) Mel Cooley
E) Howard Borden . . . . 5) Tim O'Hara
F) Gene Bradley . . . . . . 6) George Utley
G) Simon Carter . . . . . . 7) Roger Healy
H) Kyle X. Applegate . . .8 ) Amos Burke
I) Harry Dickens . . . . . . 9) B.J. McKay
J) Joey Harris . . . . . . . 10) Napoleon Solo

K) Anthony Nelson . . . . 11) J.R. Ewing . . . (example)

I had one years ago. Where your grills are, on mine there was 5 upright thin oak doors. So when not in use it looked like furniture. When in use, it raised or lowered the volume depending on how open or closed they were.

Had some Hank Williams 78s for it.

Great times.

Well, bought my first machine in 1984, so it's been quite a while...

I don't really have room for any more machines...though if I sell the Galaxian machine, maybe I could fit one more.

I spent a couple weeks filling in for the Barker at the Freak Show in the Early 70s, when the Strate shows brought their State Fair into Orlando Fairgrounds,

I had no idea what I was doing, but had made friends with the daughter of the Barker, which got me on stage.

Some of the nicest people in the world, and I felt so bad for them, because of the peoples behavior towards them.

Yes sir. We are still butthurt about that. They expected to get an exorbitant amount of money for that land. They wouldnt renew the lease for the property and Houstons only amusement park went away. The property is a vacant lot now and Houston still has no amusement park. I had season passes to Astroworld for probably 20 years. We bitched that it was dirty and the rides werent as good as other parks but I sure would take it now.

Sounds like a city father fuck up. We are dealing with forces in this town who want to raze some nice old, still serviceable, buildings. And then wildly spend tax payer dollars for some new fangled crap which will cost boatloads of money.

It blows my mind when I see new commercial construction near me. We have tons of empty space within 1/4 mile of some of these new developments.

When I was a kid, my grandpa had a calendar much like this one hanging in his basement. When the plastic overlay is lifted, it reveals a nude photo of a busty babe. I checked it out as often as I could get away with it.
